Weird, quirky, off-kilter, funny. Felt like it was trying to be a Wes Anderson film but without the twee pretension.

Not sure I need to watch it again but it kept my attention. Costume design was interesting - why so many shorts? As was casting - why so many elderly people, and everyone was weird. Emile Hirsch was 100% channeling Jack Black.
After watching this, I started re-watching Ghosted due to Craig Robinson.

Thir13en Ghosts (2001) — This is a movie I could've sworn I had seen before, but remember little about it, which does say something. Still, some interesting elements, the ghosts' designs, when you can appreciate them, have an almost Hellraiser-like quality to them, and never a bad thing having Tony Shalhoub in the lead even when I didn't once buy into the family dynamic.

Has the hallmarks of a a film from that era, with the direction (and camera angles) plus the inclusions of Shannon Elizabeth (American Pie franchise) and Matthew Lillard (Scream franchise) in there. Also, the twist at the end didn't make a lick of sense. That said, can't say I was ever bored and honestly, if anyone actually remembered this movie, the setting would make for a fun scare house (and using special glasses to see the entities) somewhere like at the Universal Horror Nights or w/e it's called.

It was ok and a story that had to be told but kind of overrated for award consideration and just seemed like another run of the mill war movie.

The Academy made the right decision to go with Parasite.

Doctor Strange (2016) — In my re-viewing of some MCU films (and integral to the events of IW), Doctor Strange was just as much fun and entertaining as the last time. Benedict Cumberbatch more or less plays a similar character as Sherlock but still is perfect as Strange. ***/*****

It was awful and the lead was not that hot either

Gina Rodriguez was really fat in 2010 and not a good lock wearing a crop top while working as a cashier.

Aniara - a bleak, Swedish scifi film about an ill-fated, space-going cruise ship. Good, but grim.

Never knew this existed

What was Julianne Moore thinking when she accepted this role?

Romance on the High Seas (1948) — Absolutely charming musical romance comedy featuring an amazing debut from Doris Day. A lot of fun and plenty of laughs, though today's audience, or least those around my age (35-40), this will remind you of a plot straight out of a sit-com with the mistaken identity aspect. Still, really entertaining. ***/*****

Spider-Man (2002)
Back to the Future

Both very rewatchable movies, especially BTTF which I've seen at least a dozen times now.

It's Oliver Stone's last great movie. It holds up quite well a quarter of a century later and is more timely than ever!

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Action Jackson (1988) — Poor man's action-comedy from the 80s tries so hard to make Carl Weathers a star and while he can have his charms, he's saddled with awful one-liners that even for the time were bad, and not at all funny. Rather thin story which is fine but the action/fights were basic and Weathers shared very little chemistry with Vanity, who might be cute but not a great actor. Craig T. Nelson as the villain could've been fun, however save for a scene or two, doesn't offer very much.

I can see why this didn't do very well at the box office (adjusted for ticket inflation, ~$38M) and Weathers didn't have much of a career (in theatrical features anyway) afterward. **/*****

I got Nixom, Back to the Future and Spideman 2002 on Blu-ray and don't regret any of those purchases.

I will give away the plot since nobody will watch it.

Naomi Watts plays a reclusive author living in a the bad side of town.

Sucks she died her hair dark for this but the movie was enjoyable though the ending was kind of weak.

These male characters and they way they talk remind me of me and hits home

Jack bangs Ann Margaret with Sinatra playing in the background

Garfunkel is a unusual choice to play the supporting role and maybe Mike Nichols had somebody else in mind but settled on Art?

For Love of the Game (1999)

I watched it last night on HBO Max. Hadn't seen it in about 20 years. I still like it, but 20 years later, I realize it was about 20 minutes too long. It was 138 minutes. Some scenes did drag.

But, Costner was charming and Kelly Preston is so beautiful. She was 37-38 when she made this movie.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

The Fifth Element. I think I recorded it off of Showtime and I have to assume that the print they were given was the same that was used for the remastered blu or 4k disc (neither of which I own) because it looked stunning. The best looking I have seen this film probably since I saw it in the movie theater when it was first released. There was so much about the PQ that was well, sharper and less soft than what I have seen in my past viewings of this wonderful film. On 4k tvs that do not have a MSRP of $600 like mine but more like $2,000 I suspect the 4k image must be near reference quality to look at.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Even though I'm still not a fan of the design for E.T. himself, everything else about the film is absolutely wonderful.

Love the cast!

This guy has been featured on Real Sports and Nightline.

Not shocked that a guy that taught and practiced yoga in extremely hot temperatures would become a rapist.

A shame he escaped the country and not spending time in jail.

Persona (1966)

This film never ceases to grab my attention, especially in the opening 5-minutes.

The other 85-minutes have Ingmar Bergman ringing out my brain like a sponge.

Wonderful re-visiting this film.

All That Heaven Allows (1955)

Could have been another basic Melodrama in Universal's assembly line but Douglas Sirk brings a great touch to the source material.

Loved Jane Wyman's performance as well as the juxtaposition between Henry David Thoreau's Walden & the idea of 'keeping up with the Joneses'.

Also appreciated a few not-so-subtle cinematography decisions that enhance so many emotionally poignant scenes in the film.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) — Third time seeing this and still really entertaining with good pacing even with the 2.5 hour running time. Can't place this near the top amongst the MCU but still a solid and a good first part to the finale. ****/*****

Blood and Money (2020) — Decent movie that's more a character drama for the first 30-minutes and survival drama for the last hour or so. Berenger delivers a nice performance and acts like an old man at times which is a nice change for a movie like this. The very end was a bit baffling (spoiler below) but all in all, okay way to spend 90-minutes. ***/*****

Spoiler:
At the end, some random construction worker finds the note Berenger left behind and, for some reason despite seeing the trailer had been shot up and not turning it over to the authorities, dutifully delivers it to the waitress. In the envelope was a map to the location of where he hid the cash. Good thing that dude didn't read it or anything. Might've worked better if they had set up this guy was Berenger's best friend or something, would then make sense why he would deliver it...
