Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) — Third viewing of this and while not the strongest within the MCU, or of the other Avenger movies, still has some good parts (introduction to Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany's Vision; further setting into motion the infinity stones, Natasha/Banner relationship, etc) while the plot as a whole felt messy at times. Still, found it entertaining especially seeing where the MCU was going since. ***½/*****

I watched Banana Split tonight and I really enjoyed it. I laughed out loud many times. Check it out if you have time. It's 84 minutes, so it's a quick watch. 4/5

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Die Hard. It was on HBO and I noticed it channel surfing several days back so I hit record and watched this weekend. Still my favorite film of all time...such a perfect film.

Even though I have seen the shoot the glass scene many times the aftermath with McClane picking glass out of the soles of his feet still is so painful to watch.

I also continue to appreciate how incredible a role it was for Alan Rickman to play Hans Gruber who gave a master class performance in the film.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Pretty in Pink (1986) — Enjoyable enough teen rom-com from writer John Hughes, though, and this only after my first viewing, not a favorite of mine of his. Still, for the most part I liked the core cast and thought it had its moments. However, this is near the bottom of John Hughes' brilliant career in the 1980s. ***½/*****

It was not that bad though maybe kind of sad. Affleck was sympathetic and pretty good in that role

Not the typical sports movie where a bunch of misfits come together and win a championship at the end though they could have thought of a more original title than the Way Back which was used before in a Ed Harris movie.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Captain America: Civil War (2016) — Third time seeing this and while there were a few elements that worked, like seeing these heroes fight one another at the airport, other parts made no sense or was convoluted, some minor (introducing Spider-Man) to major (the steps necessary for Zemo's plan to work; it's enough that he, somehow, was able to decrypt Hydra's files to figure out the Winter Soldier was responsible for the death of Tony's parents).

Still, not at all bad just the core plot never quite worked (unlike Captain America: The Winter Soldier, to date one of the best MCU films if not one of the best comic book movies).

Also, how long before Disney renames this...

The Hunt for the Wilderpeople - this was great, with Sam Neil as a grumpy old coot and the kid who played Russel in Deadpool 2 as a rebellious foster kid. Some really funny characters and dialogue, and some majestical New Zealand scenery. Directed by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok).

aTypical Wednesday - Written and Directed by J. Lee (Orville, among other things). Everyone should go rent (or buy!) this. Fun from start to end of its short run time. Just released on VOD this past weekend. Under $10 to rent.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

I just realized that Netflix original films should probably get a mention in this thread, so I would like to point out that I watched:

Ride Like A Girl.

The film stars Teresa Palmer and Sam Neill and is a horse racing film. It is fantastic and Teresa Palmer was wonderful and maybe if folks do not forget about this film come awards season she might get some more accolades later in the year from folks who start to line up what films and actors/actresses will be considered for rewards.

It goes without saying that Sam Neill was also great as the dad of a large brood of kids whose mother passed away when most of the kids were very young.

Netflix puts out of a lot of originals throughout the year and folks tend to focus on high visibility films like Extraction and Da 5 Bloods but I hope this film is not lost in the shuffle.

ETA: IMDB says it is a 2019 film so the awards ship has sailed but still very much a film worth checking out if you have the time.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Sixteen Candles (1984) — Really fun, and funny, romantic-comedy that is to me akin to Ferris Bueller's Day Off style of humor from John Hughes (vs. something like The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink with a more serious tone or themes). Anyway, this was my first time seeing this and while I still place TBC and FBDO over this, still another great film from Hughes to come out of the 80s and, like those, still works so well today. ****/*****

I like Palmer thought she is a mediocre actress in the movies that I have seen her in but will check out this movie soon.

Watched this on Netflix. The first movie from Tamara Jenkins since The Savages with Seymour Hoffman in 2007.

Giamtatti and Kathryn Hahn were great in this and got a couple of laughs from Molly Shannon.

I won't be shocked if they remove the scene of Nic Cage shooting Hit Girl and claim it is child abuse the way things are going right now.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

It's been a long time since I re-visited this film but appreciated my repeat viewing a little bit more than my initial one.

The film is still a bit long, clunky & over-ambitious, though I enjoyed whenever Bane (Tom Hardy) would step onto the screen.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

JeffTheAlpacca, now I just hope I do not come off as someone who oversold the film. You may want to read some of the critic/audience reviews over at Rotten Tomatoes before you make a commitment to watch.

Keep in mind, I watch a lot of corny, hokey, cliched films and enjoy them for what they are so my ability to recognize a quality film vs a meh film may not be properly calibrated...lol.

I don't think it was as bad as the reviews

Not great but not awful either.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

I'm about 6 years late, but I just saw Selma today. It's a free rental on all major platforms.

Great movie. David Oyelowo was a fantastic MLK and it had a solid supporting cast all around.

I regret not seeing this in the theatre when it first came out. This was a great major feature film debut from Ava Duvernay. I looked at her filmography and she hasn't done a project that has come even close to the magnitude of this one since 2014.

I'm a little surprised. The original thread from 6 years ago was virtually dead. Hardly anyone commented about seeing it. I guess maybe the subject matter was not something that sparked a lot of chatter back then.

Yeah I heard about that today. But that's going to come out anytime soon. Maybe not for another year or two, especially with the pandemic.

My wife and I watched The Wailing (2016) yesterday and I'm still trying to comprehend WTF I just watched. I'm not into the Horror genre but I can usually watch them but this movie overall sense of dread was just too much for me. This movie depressed the heck out of me.

The King of Staten Island (2020)

Enjoyable film, even though I felt it was a bit long.

Solid performances from Pete Davidson & Marisa Tomei.

You Should Have Left (2020)

Director/Writer David Koepp's name being attached to this project was initially why I was very interested.

Disappointing film. Even though the house shown in the film is an interesting character within itself, everything surrounding it is incredibly dull and predictable.
