The Godfathers of Mondo - 4/5

A documentary about the filmmaking partnership of Gualtiero Jacopetti & Franco Prosperi. These two men were the originators of the mondo film and the creators of Mondo Cane. Very interesting and at the same time disturbing.

Where the Truth Lies - 2/5

The rise and fall of a famous comedy duo whose lives were were changed when the body of a young woman is found in their hotel room. Two good performances by Kevin Bacon & Colin Firth wasted due to a ridiculous script.

Husbands - 4/5

After the death of a close friend, three middle-aged men from the New York suburbs re-evaluate their lives. Another good film from John Cassavetes that can be a tedious watch but worth it.

The Hunter - 3.5/5

A man is hired by a corporation to go to Austalia and track down a tazmanian tiger that is presumed to be extinct. Good film made better due to the presence of Willem Dafoe.

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter & Spring - 4/5

A Buddhist tale about how a boy becomes a man by overcoming temptation and harmonizing with nature. Another good one from Korea's best director.

Cure - 5/5

Kiyoshi Kurosawa's intelligent psychological thriller about a Japanese detective investigating a series of murders commited by different individuals but yet have the same MO. A brilliant film that stands at the top of it's genre right up there with The Silence of the Lambs & Se7en.

Charisma - 4/5

After botching a hostage situation, a disgraced big city detective placed on leave heads to the country. While there he stumbles upon an odd assortment of characters who are fighting over the fate of a tree. He winds up getting dragged into the the chaos and experiences hostility for refusing to choose a side in the matter. Another good one from Kiyoshi Kurosawa that seems simple on the surface but is much deeper than it seems.

Salem's Lot - The old 1979 TV movie (mini-series?) holds up much better than I thought, so far at least, it's intermission.

Barney's Version Watched this for the purported nude scene with Rosamund Pike. Was disappointed in that because it was really just a tease. The movie itself however wasn't bad. paul Giammatti is always good

Seance - 4/5

A psychic woman is asked to help authorities with finding a missing girl. The woman uses the situation as an opportunity to promote her gift causing things to spiral out of control. Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s loosely based adaptation of Seance on a Wet Afternoon is a slow paced creepy film that stands above the the others in it's genre.

The Pledge - 4/5

On the day of his retirement a cop makes a promise to the grieving mother of a slain 7 year old girl to catch her killer. Great film with a low key intense performance from Jack Nicholson. Also some good supporting performances from Mickey Rourke, Vanessa Redgrave & Benicio Del Toro, and solid direction from Sean Penn.

The Pledge is one of those films that turn me into a hypocrite. My heart wanted it to end the opposite way and my brain is glad it ended how it did.

Retribution - 4/5

A detective investigating the murder of a drowned woman becomes the main suspect. He then becomes haunted by the ghost of a woman in a red dress who he assumes is the murdered woman. Another Kiyoshi Kurosawa gem of what I would call "thinking man's horror".

The Crazies - 4/5

A biochemical warfare virus infects the water supply of a small Pennsylvania town causing it's victims to die or become insane. The town is then placed under quarantine by the goverment under martial law when chaos breaks loose between the military and the locals. An underrated George Romero classic.

Martha Marcy May Marlene - 4/5

After not being heard of for two years, young girl escapes from a cult and winds up staying with her older sister and her husband. The older sister unaware of what has happened starts to realize that something is not right when the younger sister's behavior starts becoming erratic. A chilling film with a great performance from Elizabeth Olson.

Faces - 4.5/5

John Cassavetes' classic film about the emptiness in the lives of a couple who on the surface seem to have it all. One day the sexually unsatisfied husband asks for a divorce and the couple go about their seperate ways in search of what they think is missing from their lives. One of the best films to depict suburban malaise and the disintegration of a marriage. Contains some of the best acting captured on film.

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai - 4.5/5

Excellent film about an inner city hit man working for the mafia who follows the code of the samurai. After a job does not go exactly as planned, he becomes a marked man by his employers. A combination of Urban Drama, Eurocrime, Japanese new wave and French new wave.
