Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood - Third time watching this and this time I actually really, really enjoyed it. While I still think it's weak compared to most of Tarantino's other movies (aside from Death Proof, which remains my least favourite of his), it's better than I originally thought, at least given that now my expectations were somewhat lowered. Liked Brad Pitt a lot more than the first time I watched it, and DiCaprio grew on me as well. As long as you're not looking for a pulse-pounding movie that moves at a steady clip, it's an okay diversion-type movie. Never had an issue with the production design or anything, and the scene with Kurt Russell, Zoe Bell, and Pitt remains my favorite of the movie. Loved it just as much as the first time I saw it...I imagine I'll revisit this again in the next several months, and I'm kind of looking forward to that.

Not the target audience

Mikey Day and Rachel Dratch two SNL alums kept my interest only briefly

Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)

Much of comedy fell a bit flat for me but I enjoyed a few of the more heart-filled moments.

Not as funny as the first film.

Jojo Rabbit (2019)

Great performances all-around. One of my absolute favorite films from 2019.

Dark Waters (2019)

Fairly by-the-numbers but I enjoyed Mark Ruffalo & Tim Robbins' performances.

Trick (2019) — Some decent gore/kills wrapped up in a nonsensical story with subpar acting and even worse dialogue. Idea was there, everything else fell flat, including a twist that doesn't make a lick of sense or at the very least, contrived. */*****

21 Bridges - Mostly boring standard cop fair with a "twist" anyone could see coming from the beginning. The short run time helped but I've seen episodes of Law & Order with a better plot and execution.

Hudson Hawk (1991) — Outrageous, if not inconsistent, slapstick comedy that has its charm I suppose and is a nice, easy watch if you're not looking for anything serious. However, I'd prefer putting on The Naked Gun if I was looking for something similar and done better. ***/*****

A great cast though not exactly the most uplifting story

A remake of a 2006 film with Mads Mikkelsen

21 Bridges

It only took about 2 minutes to figure out who was dirty.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Watched a ton of movies the past several days...

Widows - Liked it much more upon second viewing, but still felt it was too long. The main villains are very one-note and I didn't like that. Thought the whole thing between Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall was very cliche. Still a pretty good movie, but I don't understand why certain folks think it was Oscar-worthy...

The Front Runner - Best part was seeing Bill Burr act in this semi-serious drama. Love Bill Burr. The movie is excellent (as is the book, which I read before the movie came out or, I don't know for sure, but was even announced). If you hated the media before this, you'll hate them more now. Hugh Jackman was great.

Deadpool 2 - Watched the Extended/Unrated Cut. I gave this movie a hard time the first viewing I saw. Thought it paled in comparison to the first. This time? I actually really, really enjoyed it. It was clever. It was fun. A little long? Sure. But I loved a lot of the one-liners and whatnot...Loved it a thousand times more than the last two Avengers movies, which I thought sucked...

Imperium - Pretty bad movie about FBI agents tackling white supremacists. Why do I feel it is that bad? Well, if you're an agent in the FBI and you know so little about Timothy McVeigh and The Turner Diaries, then you probably shouldn't be in the FBI. So Toni Collete (who I typically love) has the thankless role of explaining to Daniel Radcliffe what those two things are and why he should be worried. WTF? A FBI agent knows next to nothing about Timothy McVeigh and domestic terrorism??? Here's how that went down: Movie Studio: Well, we need to explain to the viewers what those are? Filmmaker: Shouldn't they assume the character would already know this? Movie Exec: No, we need to dumb it down and paint a picture for them. Same exact thing pisses me off about Sicario. Sicario is about nine-tenths of a great movie, but fails on every single f**king level when they explain to Emily Blunt's character that the Mexican police can't be trusted. And she seems shocked. Like, seriously?? You're in the FBI going after the Mexican cartels and you don't know that the Mexican police maybe, just maybe might be bought off??? That basically ruined what should have been a great movie (in my eyes)...Her character was just far too stupid and naive to be believable..

Lumet, Hoffman, and Finney 3 greats RIP

Wished Hoffman was still around and such a shame he is gone.

I liked it the first time and even more the second time.

If your parents think you are a bad seed tell them you are not as bad as Hoffman's character

Night Key (1937) — Fun if not ultimately forgettable 1930s crime thriller that is certainly one of Karloff's lesser movies, however it's watchable enough, I suppose. ***/*****

As a side, not entirely sure how this got on Shout's Universal HORROR Collection other than it stars Karloff.

It was not bad and the cast was loaded with stars but 2 hrs and 24 minutes was really long

If Norton wants to direct more movies I am for that.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

The Sonata (2018) — Decent enough supernatural-thriller that in the hands of someone like Guillermo del Toro probably would've been great, instead kind of plods along even with a short running time (~85 min.), however I did like the lead actress Freya Tingley as a fresh face.

There are some creepy elements here and there and the finale was a tad off with some subpar visual effects, yet still had some chilling spots. I would say it's worth renting, though I had interest as I do like the violin so I guess it might've held a tad more interest because it's central to the plot. ***/*****

Not sure if this was Rutger Hauer's last released film, but he's not in it a whole lot.

I always thought this was an okay movie but overrated. Also didn't help that the first time I watched it was during midday in the living room with my parents. I had to squirm during the Marisa Tomei sex scene. Movie just seemed a bit contrived to me. Still loved Hoffman's performance, and he is very much missed...

Hoffman was a unique talent and I miss him.

My cousin saw the Guru the Heather Graham movie with his parents and had a similar experience
