The Handmais's Tale S1 (2017)

Another scifi series I hard heard holy praises about. I lasted 3-4 episodes and got bored. Maybe I'll pick it up again someday (thank the gods for libraries!) but again, I wish they had done a mini-series instead. You can disguise 'General Hospital' all you like with nicer characters, bigger budgets, gripping stories, its still a soap!

Sympathy for Mr Vengeance (2002)

The usual Korean violence from Park Chan Wook. Not as good as Old Boy but watchable if you like the genre. Less confusing to my simple mind than Lady Vengeance.

Solo (2018)

It did improve a bit on second viewing, but the casting of both Han Solo and Q'uia (Emilia Clarke) was a mistake. Both were not very good and lacked charisma. Still, rather weak entry in the weaker and weaker franchise (only "Rogue One" saved the day imho)

Is it more action/superhero or is it like a comedy with a superhero background? The trailer makes it look more like a Walt Disney sunday night family picture than a proper superhero film. The hero seems almost farcical. Your opinion?

Saw this on DVD years ago and imo the film looks and sounds even better on blu. Liked the way director Terrence Malick juxtaposes scenes of the beauty & serenity of nature with scenes of the carnage happening nearby.

Has anyone seen the 1964 version directed by Andrew Marton? Worthwhile?
I like the fact that there's lots of philosophical/theological/sociological questionning by the characters. It almost feels the battle scenes (superbly filmed) are just pauses in between the dialogue scenes showing a deep need to understand life from the characters. Very rare in war movies where it's usually we the good guys need to kill them the bad guys.

Sidney Lumet directed this?

Maybe he wanted to be around that hot 1993 Rebecca De Morney ass.

It was based on a true story and the first time I heard other songs from Frankie Goes to Hollywood not called "Relax."

Mon Mon Mon Monsters (2017)

Taiwanese Horror/Comedy that attempts to make a point on Youth Culture and bullying, yet loses its way very early on.

This film didn't need to go to the lengths it did to take a strong stance on bullying but it does. This film needed a scalpel and Director Giddens Ko chooses a Board with a Nail in it.

Not a single character is likeable so in the end, it's hard to care what this film is trying to say or what fates wait for the characters.

Unicorn Store (2019)

The script is clunky but I enjoyed the theme of optimism in a time of constant cynicism.

Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk (2017)

Fantastic & incredibly thorough Documentary about the 70s-90s Punk Rock scene in Northern California, specifically in the East Bay (Oakland, Berkeley, Rodeo, Benicia, etc.)

My old boss from when I was a Radio DJ/Programmer has a few interview spots in the Documentary.

It was a message movie but entertaining though maybe you have to suspend belief that this guy is willing to risk common sense to do this.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

I watched two movies this week.

I watched There's Something About Mary on HBO and it still holds up. 5/5

I also watched Never Goin' Back. The two leads have great chemistry. 3.5/5

Justice League vs. The Fatal Five (2019) — Not exactly great, but still entertaining stand alone animated movie has some good character development and a solid enough story at its core. It is also nice to hear Kevin Conroy and George Newbern reprise their voice roles. 3.75/5

IMO it's the best film of the vengeance trilogy. Better character development, more complex themes, and less style over substance.

I forget the first time I watched it and then the ending WTF?

I knew it looked like crap but Demián Bichir was in it so maybe there was some level of quality to it but I was bored.

Watchable but I was anticipating something more in a film about a crime boss who remained on the FBI's Ten Most-Wanted list for 10 years despite a reward that was second only to Osama bin Laden's.

Last October Whitey Bulger was transferred to the Hazelton penitentiary in WV and within 24 hours of arrival was found beaten to death by inmates using a sock-wrapped padlock, and with his eyes gouged out and tongue nearly cut off. Bulger's longtime companion, Catherine Grieg, is due for release sometime next year.

Badlands (1973), Days of Heaven (1978)

Had previously watched director Terrence Malik's first two features on DVD. Found both even more engaging on blu. Like the way Malick incorporates landscapes and nature in his early films.

The Paperboy (2012)

Film features several actors in roles very different from what they're generally known for with Nicole Kidman as a trashy 40-year-old who has a thing for convicts, John Cusack as an inbred swamp dweller who's on death row, and Matthew McConaughey as a gay reporter with a thing for African-American men. Watched through to the end to see if the film had any redeeming value. Nope.

The Fat Spy (1966)

Normally DVDs & blus I don't expect to re-watch end up sold, traded, or donated to a thrift store. This one went in the garbage. As should every other copy imo.

Replicas (2019) — Wasn't blown away and the writing isn't the best, along with some poor CGI and some questionable acting (John Ortiz especially), but I'd be lying if I wasn't somewhat entertained, especially on the unintentionally funny moments. There was an interesting premise and might've made for a better limited TV series (to flesh out characters) for Netflix. As it is, I'd say it's worth a rental. 3.0/5

It was alright but slow and I liked "Moonlight" Jenkins other film better.

Hellboy (2019)

I believe this is the first Neil Marshall film that I can say I wasn't a huge fan of.

I appreciated the liberal use of the R-Rating as well as a few of the set pieces but performances are flat in this overstuffed film.

Shazam! (2019)

Absolutely loved the Superhero Montages, which helped redeem much of the film for me.

Final act was a bit long in tooth.

The Wind (2019)

Loved the limited (but beautiful & eerie) 19th-Century setting as well as the Cinematography & Soundtrack.

The film suffers quite a bit from the lack of a hefty script and an over-reliance on non-linear storytelling.
