Young Man with a Horn (1950)

Uninspired and predictable but watchable story of young trumpet prodigy (Kirk Douglas) making a name for himself in the jazz world of Chicago and NY in the 50s. Lots of musical numbers with Doris Day.

The Terminator (1984)

A lot of it has aged badly (sfx, models, hair cuts and clothing, music) but still a great story with a nice far-out scifi script. It amazing to see what sfx have become since. Well, to be fair, Star Wars which was released 7 years earlier had better model shots and effects, so its not only the era, but the time and money and talent they put in. Wanted to show it to my 12-year old son and he thought it was amazing. Which he says after most of the films I show him, be they old Universal monster films, Hitchcock thrillers, Marvel, old Star Wars, Hammer horrors, etc.
At least its good to have an enthusiastic cinephile in the house!

Le tout nouveau testament (2015) (The Brand New Testament)

Bizarre, absurd, darkly humorous and philosophical. Very beautifully shot and with great directing ideas but the script is a bit of a yes-no thing. God lives in Brussels and is a moody, mean drunk, His daughter (!) escapes paradise - their slummy apartment - and goes on earth to find disciples of her own - like her brother Jesus did - to try and rectify creation which her father has messed up terribly. Daddy is not happy and goes after her with semi-comical results.
Not a bad film, lots of nice bits but the balance between the comical and dramatic is not right and we feel a bit confused as to the whole thing.

The Street Fighter's Last Revenge (1979)

"How many roads must a man walk on, before you can call him a man?" Is it the same for revenges? I don't know how many revenges he had before but this is his last one. Promise!
Hilariously dubbed Sonny Chiba 'streetfighter' film with the usual mean looks, silly fights (he even fights a iron bars-bending Mexican with mariachi outfit complete with sombrero!) and appaling script. All clean good fun.

the man who never was (1956)

Excellent Brit film based on a true WW2 counter-espionage story where towards the end of the war the English dumped a body on the spanish coast - as if his boat was shot and he drowned - with false top secret info on an invasion of Greece and Sardinia from North Afrika. The whole film depicts the lenght at which they went to make the story credible and the Germans' tries to find out if it is. Straight but captivating.

I watched A Simple Favor today and I really enjoyed it. I think it's Paul Feig's best movie so far. Lively and Kendrick are great in it. 4/5

The kind of movie Hollywood does not make anymore?

It looks interesting though Lively is pretty she is a mediocre actress.

Maybe the second time I saw it since I don't remember anything the first time.

Could have been a lot better.

"Why would an ancient Japanese warrior destroy a fucking pharmacy sign in fucking Woodbury?"

This may be Lively's best work so far. She has a lot of darkly comedic lines.

World's Greatest Dad. My brother gave me this movie like four years ago, but I finally sat down and watched it this morning. Probably Bobcat Goldthwait's best film, and definitely one of Robin Williams's best roles. Can't believe this kind of got mixed reviews when it came out, as I thought it was darkly hilarious, but touching at the same time. It's even more bittersweet watching it now that Williams is no longer with us. Just a fantastic storyline dreamt up by Bobcat, and acted brilliantly by Williams. I would highly, highly recommend this one. I really wish Bobcat and Williams had had an opportunity to work together again after this...They seemed like an ideal team...

Hellraiser (1987)

I know its a classic for some but I could never gather any interest in it, even after two screenings. Bad acting, bad direction, common script, cheapish looking 'baddies' and low-budget effects just don't make it for me. I just read on wiki that they are up to 9 sequels and still counting! I have 2 and 3 but I think I'll give them a pass...

Sherlock Season 2 (2011)

I keep wondering how come such a mean and unsympathetical lead character could have had such a following. I love Cumberbatch's performance and I guess his bouncing off Freeman's and evryone else's friendlier heroes make it work. Nice stuff. And sod the purists who will only watch Rathbone or the older straighter versions (which are good too but classics can move with their times too).

Death in Paradise S6 (2017)

More of that nice semi-exotic light police drama from the BBC.

Ocean's Eleven (2002)

I don't thinnk I've seen any of the sequel but this is a nice bourgeois caper film. Much better than the original imho.

It was nice to hear Dick Enberg do play by play though in a silly movie.

It came out in 2004 and Bernie Mac, Dick Enberg, and Stuart Scott are all dead.:(

Marked For Death (1990)

Fairly standard 90s Action Film structure & script.

Worth it for the hilariously high level of violence and Basil Wallace's character.

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) — It was alright... I guess. Some decent action, okay humor and did generally like Alden Ehrenreich who at least didn't seem to be doing an impersonation of Harrison Ford and instead was trying to make the role somewhat his own. Otherwise, a fine two-hour time waster but hardly anything memorable. 3.0/5

Saw this in the theater and wasn't thrilled. I already own the others so I wanted this in 4K as well. Tremendous effects. Nice set pieces. A little twist. But too much seems to exist for the sole purpose of setting up the next installment. It's a solid c+

Gotti (2018) — Well, I liked the soundtrack, but not much else, especially John Travolta who hardly melted into the role of John Gotti. Also, the pacing was awful, lacked any energy and we learn very little about the man himself. In addition, seems like director Kevin Connolly and the writers took a step back on Gotti's brutality and instead propped himself up as someone to be respected. 1.0/5

Siberia (2018) — Do I regret seeing this? No. Do I have any interest watching it again? No. Reeves was okay though the highlight was Romanian-born Ana Ularu as Katya, but little else stood out. Also, the finale should've been far more thrilling and longer than it was. 2.5/5

The Harry Potter movies finally worked their way up into the rotation, we watched The Sorcerer's Stone night before last (not enough time to watch a 161 min. movie last night), watching Chamber of Secrets tonight.

Gods and Monsters (1998)

I loved it when it came out and still did on second viewing. Although brendan Fraser's performance had impressed me more first time around. Still his best role in my humble opinion. McKellen is great as retired excentric homosexual director James Whale of 30s horror classics (Frankenstein, Invisible Man, etc.) who forms a friendship with macho ex-marine turned lawn boy Fraser. Imaginary last days of Whale before he commited suicide. Very touching.

Not bad cult mockumentary about two canadian headbangers who go around drinking beer and being assholes and philosophing about life. Some good jokes, some doubtful ones.

Child Eater (2012)

Effective 14-minute Short Film, even though the setup feels like it borrows from many films before it.
