Re: Last movie you watched
Well,it was not last night..but a few nights a go,I watched CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND The Special Edition.Spielberg was right to leave it out..it really added nothing.
This is the movie that had a HUGE affect on me when I saw the original version back in '77( I was 6 years old).I really did believe that one day,a huge mother ship would land some where in America, aliens would come out and communicate with us,and a select few humans would leave with them.Hell,i even believed that I would be one of them.In fact,I didnt even wait for the rest of my family during the end credits,I just walked up the aisle with all the confidence in the world, feeling as if I had almost touched the hand of God.
Dammit..I even got choked up when little Barry is reunited with his mother.
I loved that movie than, and I love it now.God,how I wish I could go back to the late 1970s.
Ok..back to the present. So,the Friday night,I was having a bitch of a time trying to find something to watch on TV.Now a days, even On Demand is little help.I stumbled upon CLIFFORD.Now,i have been a fan of Martin Short since his work on SNL,and I have liked Charles Grodin, ever since seeing King Kong 76 when I was a little kid.
I remember this film getting AWFUL reviews.Well,I can't argue.I can't imagine many people actually enjoying this one..Short'c character is a real little shit. Some how..I managed to sit through the entire thing in one setting..which is quite rare for me.
Now,last night,I finished watching SUPERMAN IV:THE QUEST FOR PEACE.
What the hell took me so long to see this???This came out back in 1987,and I know for sure that my parents went to see it and invited me along. Why the hell did I say no?I saw the first 3 at the theater,as well as SUPER GIRL.
Anyway, this too I recall getting bad reviews. Not sure why.I have to be honest..I thought it was fun!
Certainly more enjoyable than III and ..RETURNS.

Now you see me: fun, but ridiculous caper flick. I would give it a B-

Rolling Thunder - 4.5/5
A Vietnam POW comes back home and faces another type of war while re-adjusting to civilian life.
Another great film written by Paul Schrader a year after Taxi Driver.

Silver Linings Playbook - hated it. I found all the characters unlikable and I couldn't relate to any of them. I also don't think ppl yelling the F word at each other qualifies as outstanding performances.

I thought De Niro did a great job with his role and I didn't mind bradley cooper(who came across as annoying but that is also an attribute of his mental illness) the movie itself lost me about halfway through when it essentially turned into a very predictable rom-rom with one cliché scene after another, I had to turn it off.
I watched Cloud Atlas last night and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was great to see Tom Hanks in all kinds of zany roles, as well as the other actors. It was a lot more emotionally involving and coherent than I was expecting it to be. I loved how seamlessly all the different periods and scenarios fit together. A really cool and unique film, very underrated IMO

Cannibal! the Musical the other night. Was going to go see STID but that would have been a later night than was desired.

Hatchet III
Went to the premiere last night. Yay for free booze! I never saw the second one, but mostly enjoyed the first. This one played great to the right audience. Lots of gore, lots of gags, surprisingly solid acting from the leads. Horror fans who don't have to take every film so seriously should dig it.

1492 Conquest of Paradise - one of my faves and the bluray actually looks pretty good, but the audio is the real standout
Lisztomania - by far Ken Russell's craziest film.
Fast and Furious 6 - could have better if it was twenty minutes shorter.
Midway (1976) - with such a great cast I was expecting better, the use of stock footage felt like a cheap move on the filmmaker's part.

Last Kiss Like Zach Braff and rented it for Rachel Bilson's tits. Started out well but got really depressing in the second act. Zach Braff has some of the best facial expressions I've seen.
Wreck It Ralph Jane Lynch and Sarah Silverman took what would be mediocre and elevated with their performances. Enjoyable enough.
