A Quiet Place - 3.5/5

I liked the concept, but thought it could have been executed a bit better. I still enjoyed it.

They were talking about it on the radio in relation to this movie. A woman who is part of a group playing this game for years flies all the way to Scotland or some far away place to tag a player at an event like a wedding. That is one of my pet peeves. That is someone else's event and you make it about you. Selfish.

Heard good buzz but somehow I don't see myself sitting there paying attention to something with so little dialogue.

A guy that looks like Ice Cube and an aging flabby King Leonidas make a for a fairly typical heist flick. All the requisite "almost caught" moments are there along with a twist at the end. Some good gratuitous nudity and a crapload of bullets flying made it a decent rental but not a keeper.

Future World (2018) — Well, that was a pile of crap. Only thing that kept me somewhat engaged were James Franco and Milla Jovovich's batshit insane performances, sadly they're not the main characters and not enough screen time to make any of this worth watching. Also, not sure if I've seen more of a phoned in performance than I did with Lucy Liu. 1.0/5

Resolution (2012)

Appreciated how far the film was able to play off of a little ambiguity. Solid Low-Budget Horror.

Spring (2014)

I enjoyed the film pieces, even though it tends to meander quite a bit.

My Cousin Rachel (2017) - based on the book by Daphne DeMaurier. Like DeMaurier's novel, Rebecca, this is a gothic mystery thriller, set in rural England in the 1800s. Rachel Weisz plays the title role in this adaptation. I liked it for Weisz (I like her in just about everything she does), and the film sets up the mystery and intrigue in a way that kept me engaged. The twists near the end and the ultimate resolution, though, left me a little unsatisfied. I have not read the book, so I can't say how faithful this film was to that.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Mute - this is a Netflix film, directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) and starring Alexander Skarsgård (of True Blood fame). Paul Rudd also stars, in a role that is a bit uncharacteristic for him. I enjoyed this film a good bit. Skarsgård's screen presence grabs your attention, even though he has no voice. Rudd is really excellent in his role, as is Justin Theroux as Rudd's sidekick-in-crime. The story is set in a Blade Runner-esque future. The story could easily have been set in the present. The sci-fi setting is almost completely unnecessary, except to provide some visual flair and to even further portray the main character as an abnormality (He's Amish so he doesn't use most technology).

Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992) — Been 20+ years since seeing this (might've seen it in the theaters or at least when it came on VHS), but still fun with a few laughs. No, not top shelf Chevy Chase and completely forgot it was directed by John Carpenter (stepping in for Ivan Reitman who was on the losing end of an ultimatum), yet not a bad time waster with some, at the time, decent visual effects which, of course, aren't at times impressive today. 3.0/5

The Cured - 3.5/5

A man tries to return back to living as human after being cured of a virus that turned him into a zombie. While readjusting, he encounters the everyday prejudices faced by those who were "cured" from those who were never infected. An interesting critique about Ireland's history disguised as a sci-fi horror film.

It (2017) - HBO. I have never read the book or watched the mini-series but I thought this was fantastic. The friendship between Bev and the chubby kid was fantastic. I am glad this turned out to be more of a creepy film vs a gorefest and I will certainly be there to watch part 2.

Rampage (2018) — Pretty dumb but still entertaining enough disaster action movie, of course I do like The Rock in this kind of a role, so that helped. Still has the same problems when you have CGI characters going up against other CGI characters (see: Transformers and even Kong: Skull Island). At the end of the day, can't say I found it a waste of time. 3.0/5

The Endless (2018)

Moorhead & Benson's best film. It's a much stronger film if you have seen Resolution (2012) & Spring (2014)

Did you see this in the theater since it has not come out on home video yet?

Worth a blind buy?

No, I saw it on 4K UHD (got a copy early to review). Is it worth a blind buy? Um, I'm kind of on the fence. There were entertaining moments for sure and I do like The Rock so that helps. At the moment I say rental.

A Quiet Place (2018) — Well made horror-thriller and drama from Krasinski who continues to prove to be a capable dramatic actor (was really good in 13 Strong) and some genuine emotional scenes and the creature effects, the few there are, were well done. That said, not exactly why this struck a chord with audiences but still was entertaining. 4.0/5

Downrange (2017)

Awkward Cast. Thin Plot. Both hurt what should have been a fairly entertaining concept.

Not even Ryuhei Kitamura's amount of gore can save this one.

It's one of those "Not necessarily good but better than it needed to be." Kinds of movies. It's dumb, fun and surprisingly more like the game than expected. It's impossible to tell if it's worth a blind buy though, depends on your inner 10 year old.

Plus it's nice to see The Rock in a skyscraper centric movie.

Permanent Record (1988)...i had saw this a long long time ago. Didn’t remember much. It was ok. I don’t think they dealt with suicide too well and Keanu was like a serious Ted and a little overacting, especially when he realized David fell/committed suicide by rocks. Still, it held my interest and it was free in hd with credits at Amazon.

Mom and Dad (2017)

If only the entirety of the film was as good as the initial setup.

Too many unnecessary flashbacks for a film like this. Should have kept its foot on the gas pedal and left it there.

Ghost Stories (2018)

Fantastic atmosphere. Solid performances.

On first viewing, I'm unsure if I enjoyed all of the decisions within the script, including the final act.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)

Taylor Sheridan's weakest script is still made entertaining by Director Stefano Sollima.

Doesn't hurt that Josh Brolin & Benicio Del Toro reprise their roles here.
