Stakeout (1984) — One of my personal favorites from the 1980s, more so for Dreyfus and Estevez than the story. Lot of fun even after seeing it probably 5-6 times over the years. 4.0/5

Captain Fantastic - 1.5/5

After his mentally ill wife commits suicide, a father who raised his six children "off the grid" in the wilderness, must expose them to the outside world so they can attend their mother's funeral. Viggo Mortensen is such a great actor, it's too bad that this film doesn't compliment his talents. The first half is actually good and then the second half is just a giant disappointment. I don't think I've ever heard a rendition of Sweet Child o' Mine that made me want to punch someone so badly.

Christmas Vacation Rolled out the old front wheel drive sleigh, fired up the HD DVD player and watched the holiday favorite. Always a fun movie and a December tradition. Never a huge Chevy fan. Most of his movies were pretty terrible but he nailed the hapless dad part. Cousin Eddy in the dickey with the too tight sweater and pants gets me every time.

"just yackin on a bone,......he got it up."

The Fire Within - 3.5/5

After being cured of alcoholism, life becomes unbearable for a man suffering from depression. Liked the technical aspects, but could not empathize with the lead character and the spoiled pretentious people he considers his friends.

Hangman (2017)

Stars Karl Urban, Al Pacino, Brittany Snow and Sarah Shahi.

Reminded me of one of those late 90's early 2000's thrillers that HBO used to show on Friday nights.

Pretty much a by the numbers serial killer procedural. I found it watchable, but forgettable. A decent cast for a low budget B thriller.

I'd give it a C

I haven't watched this film. I really love the acting of Al Pacino. Was he unable to draw the film to a higher rating?

We Are Still Here 6/10
I know it's a popular horror thing recently, with stuff like House of the Devil & It Follows, to give off a timeless feel, as though the movie could be set in the golden age 70s/80s. But man this one took it to another level. Feels like it time traveled from 1988, like something I would have rented on vhs as a kid. First half had a fresh take on the new england haunted house genre, creepy vibe, nicely shot, bad acting but that kind of added to the appeal. Then it goes gonzo with splatter deaths, terrible effects, bad ghostmonster costumes, the works.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

- Pirates Of The Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales 4K UHD. I actually enjoyed this film a whole lot (the new male/female leads worked for me) and it appears to close out the series just fine. If we do not get any more POTC films I am okay with that.

- XXX: The Return Of Xander Cage. Blu ray. The martial arts combat was fun to watch, and it was indeed action packed (the chase scene mostly on top of trucks at the end was nuts) but remind me again why this film needed to exist? I picked it up for $5.88 via one of the Amazon lightning BF deals so the price was right, but I understand why folks basically shrugged their shoulders when this came out saying okay another XXX film exists. Fun but pointless with a betrayal plot that is telegraphed to the audience practically from the very first scene of the film (or at least when a certain doomsday type doodad is "stolen"). It should have a decent shelf life on home video.

1. Vin Diesel needed to pay his mortgage
2. I ask that question every time I see a Transformers sequel
3. It made over $300M overseas, $164M from China alone hence why a fourth one is going to be made.

The Cranes Are Flying - 3.5/5

Two people who fall in love must put their futures on hold when the USSR enters WWII. As a fan of Soviet cinema I’ve heard so many good things about this film. The acting, directing and cinematography are amazing. What in my opinion keeps this film from being the masterpiece many claim, is the shallowness of the story. I guess I was expecting something deep and all I got was tragic melodrama.

Patti Cake$...really fucking good. Very 8 Mile, which I loved, but a flavor all itís own. I havenít finished an entire Netflix movie in a longtime till this. Those beats and rhymes were really good.

If He Hollers (aka I Stay with You) - 1.5/5

Four spoiled female brats from the city kidnap a hillbilly from a dive bar and sexually torture him for shits and giggles. Attempts something interesting by subverting the rape-and-revenge genre and flipping it on its head. Now if only the characters weren't so unlikable and annoying, and if there was more depth to the story, we might have had something interesting.

I found the idea of Charlize Theron kicking everyone's ass seemed perfectly believable, up until the scene where she strapped on the proton pack, then it went off the rails.
