Midnight Special - 4/5
A father goes on the run with his son who possesses special powers and is wanted by the government who believes the boy is a threat. A tense sci-fi thriller from the great Jeff Nichols.

Remember - 3.5/5
A man in his 80's suffering from dementia escapes from a retirement community in order to find the Nazi guard who murdered his family at Auschwitz.
Good to see something decent come from Atom Egoyan, it's been a long time.

The Long Kiss Goodnight...never saw it before. Man, Geena Davis was bad ass! Sam Jackson states this as his most watched movie of his. Really cheesy, but the angle works. Takes a bit to get going. Maybe 40 minutes and then it's just all a go. Nice little piece for Harlin.

Life on the Line (2016)
Essentially a TV movie of the week with John Travolta as an electric linesman who leads a group to help repair a power grid after a massive storm in Texas.
Supposedly it's based on true events.
Not horrible. Has a decent supporting cast. Devon Sawa, Julie Benz, Kate Bosworth and Gil Bellows. Didn't realize how many Linesman lost their lives over the years. They actually showed some real faces who passed away at the end.

American Honey - 4.5/5
Coming of age road-trip tale about a poor rural teen girl who leaves home to sell magazines with a group of people whose circumstances are similar to hers. A realistic, gritty, down to earth film that captures the ups and downs of young people trying to find themselves.

Devon Sawa is that the first time his name has been mentioned since 2001 lol?
Towelhead on Cinemax. Probably one of the most unconformable movies to watch ever even after a second viewing.

Beyond Redemption 2015- browsing through Netflix I noticed this movie is directed by Bruce Fontaine, one of the best Gweilo actor/fighters from Hong Kong in the 80's and 90's. I think Bruce Fontaine misses all those awesome HK action and martial arts movies from the 80's and 90's, so he decided make one of his own. This is basically one of those super low budget martial arts movies where they replace actors with stuntmen. Here we have Brian Ho and Don Lew. Instead of playing henchman #1 and henchman #2, they play the hero and the main villain. And they do a damn good job. The acting from Ho and Lew is pretty good, and the fighting is top notch. It's a breath of fresh air to see this type of action. Limited editing, clean punching and kicking exchanges with intricate choreography, nice stuntwork, and best of all no wires. I despise wires and CGI, and I'm horrified to see what HK action movies look like today. Red Cliff is the only movie I can think of in the last 20 years that's done wirework correctly and used it to actually enhance the action and not make it look fucking stupid. So bravo to Bruce Fontaine for not using wires when there's no need to. This isn't a great movie. It's just typical Triad undercover cop stuff. But definitely worth a watch for anyone who likes HK action.

I had some good luck on Netflix today. First was Beyond Redemption, and I just finished Falcon Rising and Creep from 2014.
Falcon Rising- solid martial arts revenge flick. Michael Jai White just refuses to age. No really standout fights here but plenty of bone crunching action with clean choreography.
Creep- uncomfortably funny and fast paced. A creepy gem.

Elle...just sublime. Huppert was amazing. i haven't seen Fences yet, but this was Oscar worthy. unbelievable her expressions, her emotions, her toughness. almost no traces this is a Paul Verhoeven film. maybe the videogame imagery, but this is unlike anything i've seen him do. well done!

Jurassic Park III - Netflix. Still a fun watch and it is a brisk 94m so it never overstays its welcome.

There must be some other dapper Brit for the second one. Don't know why they'd go with Channing Tatum for an English movie. This is very fun it was nice to revisit.

That sequel is going to suck ass if Tatum is the lead.

Bleed For This...better than average cliched boxing movie. Didn't know the history but got chills at end. Eckhart is great. I guess Teller was ok, but someone could have brought a little more gravitas to role. Still not bad.

I watched The Edge of Seventeen tonight and really enjoyed it. Coming of Age movies are my favorite film genre and this is probably one of the five best to have come out since 2000. Woody Harrelson and Hailee Steinfeld are fantastic in this. 4.25/5
