The Dawn Patrol (1930) - I liked it. The dogfights and aerial stuff was well done.

Yesterday's Viewing:

Lawrence of Arabia - saw it for the 1st time and was blown away

Letter Never Sent - visually incredibly interesting, narrative less so

Fantastic 4/Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer - Alba's porn-level line delivery any time she is in Reed's science lab alone was worth the $5 purchase of these movies

Dark Knight Rises - forgot how good Anne Hathaway was in this and how inconsistent the film is overall, remains Nolan's worst film thus far.

Argo

Loved it. It's just a great film all around. I enjoyed the slight irony of a film about a fake, over-the-top Hollywood production was itself dressed up a bit to fit the mold of a Hollywood production. Historical inaccuracies aside, the film was tense, with the right moments of levity, and a solid cast to keep it moving forward. Of the 3 real BP contenders - this, Lincoln, and SLP - this should win.

Warner Bros. 90th Anniversary: Tales from the Lot - Interesting documentary on the studio featuring a lot of tour guides and department workers, although it was kind of bittersweet hearing Joel Silver talk of his office there, considering he has recently moved off the lot.

U-Turn - 4/5 - Underrated black comedy/noir from Oliver Stone with excellent performances from Sean Penn, Nick Nolte & Billy Bob Thornton.

Hail Mary - 1.5/5 - Jean-Luc Godard's modern day adaptation of the virgin birth. I love Godard but not even the holy spirit can save this one.

THE APPARITION

it's like a blend of all the pg-13 horror movies of the past 10 years...stay far away from this piece of shit. ashley greene running around in a bikini top and lingerie couldn't even make me suggest renting it. 1/5 (and that's only because i've seen much worse and the film was kind enough to be 75 minutes long sans credits.)

Re: Last movie you watched

The Inglorious Bastards- Awesome war/action flick with many of the spaghetti western qualities that I so enjoy. I recently learned these Euro-war films are called 'macaroni combat' movies, and that sounds good to me. This movie was fun from start to finish, and it was clear early on why Tarantino is a big fan of this film. It felt like a movie QT would've made himself if he was directing in the '70s. Highly recommended if you haven't checked it out already.

Re: Last movie you watched

Silver Linings Playbook - 3.5/5: The film starts as a good drama then slowly elements start creeping in that turn it into more a romantic comedy toward the end. It works for the story and it never stoops to the lows of a rom-com. The movie tastefully tackles mental illness and is never judgmental. The leads are all great. Jennifer Lawrence, in my opinion, is irresistible. Probably the best performance De Niro has given in a decade.

Halloween '07 - 1.5/5: There was a lot of hate around this thing when it first came out. I remember thinking that it wasn't all that bad. Nowhere near as good as the original but not a terrible movie. Revisiting it again, the movie only got worse. I can't remember why I liked it. It takes everything that was great about the original and gets it completely wrong.

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning: Awful movie with pretty much no continuity with the previous films. Actually the whole series is fucked up continuity wise.

Seven Psychopaths: I know this movie got good reviews and is well liked, but I couldn't get into this movie at all. I like quirky, but this was way too quirky for my liking. I only made it through 50 minutes.

A Woman Under the Influence - 4.5/5 - John Cassavetes' film of a woman's emotional breakdown in suburbia and the effects on her family. Brilliant.

Cherry Tree Lane

2010 home invasion flick from Britain. It just hit dvd here last Tuesday (1/29). Saw it at Wal-Mart and blind bought it for a bit under $10.

I find home invasion movies to be amongst the most tense subgenre of horror. The thought of what should be my safe haven being taken over by nefarious forces always makes me uncomfortable. This movie was missing most of the ley ingredients to be successful. There wasn't nearly enough character development for me to care about the leads. Live or die...doesn't matter much to me. There really wasn't much in the way of violence/brutality until the final 10 minutes or so. I get trying to build tension by teasing the real dangers coming, but they took way too long to get anything going. Another big drawback were the accents. I had a bitch of a time understanding what most of the characters were even saying. At least the movie was short, clocking in at about 72 minutes, minus credits.

Re: Last movie you watched

Mama- Standard horror flick of recent. No need to ever revisit.

The Grand Duel- A Giancarlo Santi spaghetti western that is a total rip off of Leone's style (but still really good). Lee Van Cleef is great as always. Excellent Luis Bacalov score that sees some portions reused in Kill Bill.

Hoop Dreams- One of the all time greatest documentaries in my opinion.

I wish they would release this on Blu-ray. I haven't even seen it but I've read enough to know that I'm going to like it and will want to own it. The DVD is OOP too so that sucks.

Re: Last movie you watched

I'm not sure what the point is of people just posting the title of the movie they watched. You can't give us even a sentence of what you thought of it? Just listing the title is completely useless.
