Revenge for Jolly

What compelled these actors to do this movie?

Nightcrawler - 4/5

After witnessing the aftermath of a car accident, a mentally unstable petty thief decides to make a career change. He decides to become an independent cameraman who is willing to do whatever it takes to capture sensationalistic footage for the local news. One of Jake Gyllenhall's best performances.

For me it's weird watching a movie where the lead is such an likeable a-hole. I loved the performance, but couldn't decide how much I was entertained due to how much he used and abused those around him. He could be called a psychopath for how little he cared for people. A definite anti-hero. Glad I saw it once, not one I'd revisit any time soon. I'd also give it a 4/5 for the pure quality of the film.

^ He was certainly a sociopath, not sure I'd quite rank him as psycho though.

Good point. That was the word I was looking for. Whatever a total disregard for anyone else is.

Crossing the Line - 4/5

Interesting documentary about one of four American Army soldiers who defected to North Korea in the 1960's.

Contracted - 3.5/5

A woman becomes very ill after having an unprotected one-night stand. Her suspicions of what might be an STD become worse when she finds out that the police are looking for the man she was with. Reminded me of early Cronenberg. Not for the squeamish.

Joe - 4/5

An ex-con with a short fuse in charge of a work crew hires a 15 year-old boy from an abusive household and takes him under his wing. After a string of unmemorable films David Gordon Green & Nicolas Cage show what they are capable of when they bring their a-game.

Survivor - Really bad action/thriller but not so much for the acting (Jovovich and Brosnan were OK) but the writing was terrible and Brosnan must've played one of the worst assassins put to screen (in a serious way). Kind of disappointed but not surprised.

Wild Tales - 4/5 - Argentinian movie which is 6 short stories "about apocalyptic revenge". This movie has a big pair of brass balls and is one of the best dark comedies I've seen in a long time, even if everything didn't work perfectly.

Bedevilled - 3.5/5

A woman under stress takes time off from her job to visit the rural village where she was born. While there she witnesses the day to day horrors that are inflicted upon her childhood friend by her husband and his family. A well made film that is part drama and part revenge film, but falls apart at the last 20 minutes.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

I was out of the country on vacation in Thailand and had the opportunity to see a few films on the plane, at my hotel and at the theater.

Jupiter Ascending (2015) -- Hated this movie. Convoluted mess. It took me 3 times (and falling asleep a few times) on the plane to finally finish this. Worst science fiction movie I've seen in years.

Outcast (2014) -- Nic Cage and Hayden Christensen in an english speaking Chinese period drama? WTF?

McFarland USA (2015) -- Super predictable, but very entertaining Disney sports movie based on a true story. Kevin Costner was very good as the lead character Jim White.

Survivor (2015) -- Terrorism action thriller with Milla Jovovich, Pierce Brosnan. Unlike The Movieman, I thought it wasn't that bad. It had some entertaining moments and decent action. But, it was barely over 90 minutes and I think it lacked some edge being PG-13. I picked up a DVD at the mall in Thailand watched this at my hotel. It was a good copy too. This is opening in theaters in Thailand this week and coming to DVD/BD next week here in the States. They got a pretty impressive cast also with Angela Bassett, Robert Forster and Dylan McDermott but the film feels very low brow like a slightly higher budget straight to video movie.

And I saw Spy (2015)

and Jurassic World (2015)

at the movie theaters in Thailand as well. I enjoyed both and already posted my thoughts in their threads.

They were actually playing turn of the century crusaders who ended up in China.

Still annoyed that the U.S. doesn't get this until August, while damn near the rest of the world got it 3-4 months ago.

Jurassic World Loved it. Very basic and already used premise but damn they got it all right. Crazy realistic dinosaurs with some easily dislikeable bad guys. Fun couple of hours.

Snowpiercer - 2.5/5

Post-apocalyptic tale of the world's only survivors of a man-made ice age confined to a super-train in which they are divided by class. Falls apart toward the end.

Jurassic World. I was pressed for time, so I could not make it to the theater that was playing it in 2D, so I ended up seeing it in a 3D Cinemark XD Theater. Glad I had a gift card to cover the pricey ticket, but yeah... a really entertaining film, and I actually thought the kids in the film worked. Bring on the sequel, as I am down for it.
