what a wonderful movie - an illuminating observation of Miyazaki at work and the creation of 'The Wind Rises' - made me wish I had continued down the path of going into film animation when I was in college.

Furious 7- James Wan and his penchant for tracking shots and swooping cameras takes over from Justin Lin for the latest installment in the endless racing/heist/explosion franchise. Business as usual, but as business as usual has been immensely fun over the last couple of installments, that's not a terrible thing. More good-natured physics-defying nonsense ensues after Jason Statham wants revenge on Vin Diesel and a bunch of things explode. The passing of Paul Walker during filming is handled with a fairly graceful sendoff, but the rest of the film is usual deliberately trashy nonsense which is quite enjoyable.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly- Sergio Leone closes out his Spaghetti Western trilogy in high style with the kind of grand excess you find in Italian cinema, half exploitation movie, half wannabe David Lean epic, it's bold and exciting filmmaking by a filmmaker at the peak of his powers, drunk on cinema and pure style. The three central performances are all fantastic, the set pieces are wonderfully operatic mythmaking, the cinematography is breathtaking, and film is full of indelible, iconic images. Time has been remarkably kind to this classic. And of course there's Ennio Morricone's masterful score.

Olive Kitteridge on HBO

Surprised there was barely any press or promos for this Mini-Series.

Almost everybody in the cast did a great job and I thought it was pretty good.

The Verdict - 4.5/5

A has been alcoholic attorney gets a chance to redeem himself by taking on a malpractice case against a hospital owned by the powerful Roman Catholic Archdiocese. Excellent film about a man who is given a second chance and refuses to take the easy path in search of true justice. One of Paul Newman's greatest performances, right up there with The Hustler & Cool Hand Luke.

'Black Souls' (Anime Nere) - fascinating gangster drama that explores the dynamics and incidents of the characters and the families it effects.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Although riveting at times, seemed to drag at others all the while not giving a complete picture of the character. The Japanese felt that soldiers should commit suicide rather than give up or be captured. Therefore they had great disdain for prisoners of war. Not that any were well treated but some worse than others and after the war it became clear just how badly Japanese POW's had it.

One area where this movie exemplary was the soundtrack. The aerial scenes were completely enveloping and immersive. I wish Memphis Belle had that level of immersion.

The Marine 4: Moving Target

Well, better than the third one (as much as I can remember) but this is a throwaway material and the action is so repetitive that it gets dull real quick.

Definitely interesting. Still trying to decide whether or how much I liked it. Scenes that went on and on, funny one minute, dark and disturbing the next, very unusual. Glad I saw it, probably not something I would seek to revisit.

Raging Bull...masterpiece.
The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies...not so masterful and the magic was completely devoid.

Skin Trade (2015)

Just saw this on demand last night via XBox 360. Paid $10 to see it. I really enjoyed it. Lots of action, fast and frenetic and loved seeing Jaa fight Michael Jai White. Thought this was one of Dolph Lundgren's better straight to video action movies. I also liked that most of the film was shot on location in Thailand.

Definitely recommended if you're a fan of international action/martial arts movies.

Frozen
It was kind of crappy out yesterday, so we decided to have our first "family movie time" with our one year old. He watched parts here and there, but thankfully isn't too interested in the tv yet. The wife and I enjoyed it, especially since it's been a while since we've watched a Disney cartoon.

Pumping Iron- Interesting documentary about the world of 1970s bodybuilding staring future movie superstar and politician Arnold Schwarzenegger at the height of his fame. Even at a young age, Arnold is a keen politician, manipulating his opponents and being ruthless but charismatic and working a crowd. The look inside the world of bodybuilding is interesting, though perhaps it could be a bit more detailed, but the hopes and dreams dashed are easily identifiable and make for solid if predictable drama.
