The Hustler - 5/5
An arrogant pool hustler travel cross country from California to New York to play the legendary Minnesota Fats. Excellent film in every aspect, from the acting to the direction and the gorgeous black & white cinematography. One of Paul Newman's best films.

That Beautiful Somewhere - 2.5/5
A detective and an archeologist join forces in order to find out what happened to a 200 year old corpse found in a bog. Had some interesting ideas but suffers from a weak script and some stiff acting.

Lucy- Psychedelically bizarre Luc Besson picture about a woman who accesses the non-existent "90% of our brain that we don't use" while being chased down by gangsters and pondering the the place of humanity in the universe. Or something. I'm not really sure. Part of it is freshman philosophizing about the unlimited capacity of the human brain, part of it is Luc Besson's usual super-glossy but empty style, shot in cotton candy colors on digital in various European and Asian locations, part of it is his usual tropes of action movies, full of car chases and gunfight (well-staged but not altogether interesting), and part of it plays like a 14-year old who just watched 2001 for the first time in philosophy class. It's a weird mix, and it gets increasingly strange as it goes along. Besson deserves credit for making a blockbuster action flick that's so strange, I suppose, but the film doesn't really add up to very much. Tries to coast by on the charm and scorching sex appeal of its lead and the glossy style to plow through the nonsensical script, but it's too scattershot to make much of a lasting impression.
Boyhood- Ambitious, intelligent, long, epic, intimate, melancholic, beautiful, frustrating, slow cinematic experiment from director Richard Linklater, filmed (On 35mm!), as I'm sure everyone now knows, over the course of 12 years. Superb performances all around, gorgeously shot, the movie is simultaneously intimate and broad in scope, but the considerable length and lack of overall narrative thrust sometime make the film feel meandering and frustrating, but it's also never less than fascinating. Linklater's deliberately naturalistic style, warm and human, captures slices of life with a wonderful ease and feels relaxed almost to a fault. There is so much to like about the film, and in the end, the cumulative effect of its examination of mortality left me deeply moved, but I also found stretch of it a little too slow without a central narrative heart. I get that that's partially the point, and I'm curious how it will stand the test of time. I admire this film tremendously. I like it, but I wish I liked it more.

Rented both of these yesterday.
Thought Alexander was a cute family movie. Although it's super short running about 74 minutes before credits.
Dracula Untold was alright. it lacked a little edge since it wasn't an R rated movie. Some good special effects though.

Yeah Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day was ridiculously short. Enjoyed it though, I appreciate kid flicks that force Jennifer Garner to say penis repeatedly and support ODing on cough syrup.
Faults (2014), really enjoyed it, great performances all around. Nice little dark comedy / thriller about cults and brainwashing. Could be easily staged as play.

12 Years a Slave (2013)
Watched it on HBO Go today. Amazing movie. Dark and really gritty. I was glued to it for the 135 minutes. Solomon Northup's story is pretty amazing.

Vagabond - 4/5
French film about a female drifter who is found dead near a ditch. Her story is then told in a documentary style via flashback by those she came in contact with in the last weeks of her life. Good film about a woman who refuses to be bound by the rules of society and the heart breaking consequences of her actions.

Don Jon - 2/5
A young man's addiction to pornography and how it prevents him from being able to achieve a meaningful relationship with the opposite sex.
A one note disappointing film that would have been worse if not for the presence of Julianne Moore.
