Night of the Devils - 3.5/5
A man collapses in a forest and wakes up in a hospital terrified. Through flashback, we find out that he was on a business trip and his car broke down in the country. He was given shelter by a strange family that holds a dark secret that could cost him his life. Nice, moody, atmospheric Eurohorror from the early 70's.

Dead Silence- The usual stylish but braindead horror fare from James Wan. As is typical of the directors films, the actors are just props for him to throw around, the dialogue is frequently cringe-worthy, the story makes little sense, and all of his shocks are riffs and tropes stolen from better horror films of the past. But the film is amicably ridiculous, and Wan and ace DP Matt Leonetti's gliding camera work is sleek, kinetic, and beautifully shot in pop art colors, and the actors have fun hamming it up. An enjoyable time-killer that'll eventually show up late at night on Halloween on cable, where it'll do its job well enough. Not much, but it doesn't aspire to much. Enjoyable trash.
The Prestige- The most Christopher Nolan of all of Christopher Nolan's films, this tale of a pair of obsessive Victorian-era magicians who's rivalry turns to obsession has all of the director's hallmarks-a script by he and his brother full of puzzle box plot twists and fractured narrative strands, obsession and showmanship, and explanatory dialogue galore. It's a spooky, obsessive, dark film, though Nolan remains a writer before he's a director-the films visuals are frequently rich and beautiful, but doesn't quite feel like it entirely works visually and it's the twisting plot which really keeps the film moving and audience guessing. The final twist may constitute going to far for some viewers, and it's a little afield from where the film starts, but it's never less than engrossing, fascinating, and iconoclastic from one of today's most distinctive filmmakers. Shot in anamorphic 35mm, as the director continues his losing battle for celluloid's future.

Rented these yesterday:

A Good Man (2014): Watchable, but ultimately forgettable DTV action movie starring Steven Seagal. But, actually the star of this movie is Victor Webster, who plays Carlos on Continuum. Just another one of the long line of low budget action movies shot in Eastern Europe.

This is where I leave you (2014): Surprised that a thread for this movie doesn't exist here. I thought this was a damn good movie. Great cast too with Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Corey Stoll, Kathryn Hahn, Jane Fonda, Dax Shepard, Rose Byrne and even Connie Britton. It's a comedy-drama about a dysfunctional family getting back together after the death of the father. Bateman and Fey were great in this.

Gutshot Straight (2014): Straight to video Indie flick starring George Eads from CSI. Also features AnnaLynne McCord, Stephen Lang and even Steven Seagal in a minor non-action role. Eads plays a guy who has a gambling problem and gets into a lot of trouble.
Decent time waster. Predictable for the most part. Noticed that Eads is credited as a Producer. Probably shot this during CSI's offseason.

Nymphomaniac (Extended Director's Cut) - 5/5
An older man finds a badly beaten woman and takes her home. While tending to her wounds she tells him her life story and what a story it is. The audacious Lars von Trier does it again and shows us why he is one of the greatest living filmmakers by giving us the best film of 2014.

Gone Girl - 3.5/5
Typical Fincher. Technically brilliant, and emotionally detached to a fault. I think this has a lot more to do with the source material he seeks out.
Boyhood - 5/5
Typical Linklater. Heartfelt and brilliant.

The Hunt - 3.5/5
A man's reputation is at stake when one of his kindergarten students falsely accuses him of sexual misconduct. A good but not great cautionary tale about the dangers of mob mentality.
Worth watching for Mads Mikkelsen whose great in just about everything he does.

Performance - 2.5/5
A gangster on the run rents a room from a former rock star in a bohemian neighborhood. As they get to know each other their worlds and identities start to merge.
A strange experimental film with too much style and not enough substance.

Love Streams - 2.5/5
After returning from Europe, a housewife going through a messy divorce moves in with her brother who is an author. We then see how these two flawed characters succeed and fail at interacting with each other and those around them. The last personal film directed by John Cassavetes has some good moments but as a fan of the man's work I am disappointed. Could have used some trimming in the editing room.

In the Mood for Love - 2.5/5
A man and a woman who are neighbors discover that their spouses who both happen to work long hours, are having an affair. This triggers a platonic relationship between them in which they repress their emotions for each other by vowing not to be like their significant others. A nice looking film that starts out interesting and then becomes repetitive when it looses steam.

Rock Of Ages second viewing as a rental. For as savaged as this was, i found it superior to Jersey Boys that I saw last week.

Finally watched this thinking that it will be crucial for the Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode that's a tie in. I was wrong. It wasn't necessary to watch the movie to watch the episode.
Anyways, I also know that the movie wasn't well received but I enjoyed it. I liked it better than the first one.

Zero Dark Thirty - 1.5/5
A cliché filled retelling of the hunt for Osama Bin Laden that brings nothing new to the table in explaining the war on terror. Watch Syriana instead.

Looks and Smiles - 3.5/5
The lives of three young adults and how they deal with the UK unemployment crisis in the 80's under Margaret Thatcher. Not Ken Loach's best, but still an interesting depiction about the day-to-day struggles of the working class.
