Simple yet touching film based on a true story about an Iowa man in his 70's and his journey to make amends with his brother in Wisconsin who recently had a stroke. Due to his age, poor health and unability to drive he decides to travel on a riding lawn mower. On his way he meets new people and through convesation we get to know more about his past. A very pleasant surprise with a different approach from David Lynch with a great performance from Richard Farsworth.
This is a brilliant movie.

Zzyzx - 0.5/5

A couple of friends while on vacation accidentally run over a man. Trying to cover their tracks they run into the dead man's wife and try to pretend as if nothing happened. Horrible indie film.

End of Watch - 2.5/5

Two LA police officers endanger their lives by stumbling upon the dirty dealings of a Mexican drug cartel. A found footage police procedural that while not bad, could have been better if it did not feel so much like a couple of man-children in a real life video game. Michael Peña and Jake Gyllenhaal are good but they deserved better material.

Come and See- Nightmarish surrealist journey into hell war film seen through the eyes of a child, which would prove a huge influence on Steven Spielberg's so-called World War II trilogy. The tale of a young boy swept along into the carnage of battle, featuring an extraordinary child actor performance by young Aleksei Kravchenko who seems to age decades in the film's 136 minutes. The film's occasionally poetic moments have been compared to Malick and its bloodletting to Peckinpah, but director Emil Kilmov and astonishing cinematographer Alexei Rodionov's free-floating camera is extraordinarily accomplished as it peers into hell and drifts across a landscape, assuming many perspectives along the way. Some have argued that the film is without context and thin and almost abusive in its relentless portray of grimness and wide-eyed destruction of a child's eye view, and it was commissioned as propaganda piece by the Soviet Union, but it's also the work of an amazing artist, if you have the stomach for it. The surreal aspects mediate this; it isn't intended to be a straightforward narrative, and watching the film's acts of barbaric brutality allows it to make broader points about man's darkest nature. Uneven, but frequently poetic, brutal, bold, breathtaking, and unforgettable. Sadly, Kino's DVD looks terrible and does the film's breathtaking cinematography no favors.

Locked In - Interesting idea, decent performances, respectable production values but poor execution.

Spoiler:
I figured it out with 35-40 minutes still to go.

On a side note: holy hell, the soundtrack on my DVD was insane.

I Liked it as well... But only 4/5 was a little too short...

saw this yesterday - cute and funny, but nearly all the jokes were in the trailers. The kid behind me was funny, he knew the trailers because he kept on saying "wait for it... wait for it" (funny moment happens) - cue laughter.

saw today:

The Disappearance of Eleanor Rugby (Him / Her) 189min version.

Christmas With The Kranks (Netflix). The Botox scene was pretty damn funny, along with the scene where the front yard is iced over and all the Carolers keep falling down.

Prisoners - 4/5

When two six year old girls disappear, one of their fathers decides to take the law into his own hands when he feels that the police are not doing their job.
Good thriller with an excellent cast, beautiful cinematography by the great Roger Deakins & tight direction from Denis Villeneuve.

Quadrophenia - 2.5/5

The Who's rock opera about teenage angst in 1960's England between two rival cliques.
Great soundtrack that helps cover up the mediocre story that we've seen done better.

The Machine (2013) on Netflix, an indie sci-fi film about a computer scientist developing artificial intelligence for the military. The visuals and effects are pretty impressive considering its budget (less than £1 million according to Wikipedia), but the restrictions are evident elsewhere, primarily in the scope of the film and the soundtrack. While it held my interest, there was nothing deep or groundbreaking about it, and the shorter runtime keeps several of the concepts and characters from being fleshed out more.

The Iron Rose - 4/5

A young couple while riding their bicycles through France stop by a huge cemetery for a picnic. After eating they decide to look around and lose track of time.
Darkness starts to settle in and the path that led them into the cemetery no longer leads them out. A very haunting film that feels like a dream from the great Jean Rollin.

Men in Black III- Much better than it has any right to be second sequel to the runaway 1997 smash. Though it doesn't have the wit of the first film, it's miles better than the phoned-in second installment. Given that it was apparently started without a complete script and was rewritten as it went along and came a decade after the last movie, it doesn't have any right to be as much fun as it is. Brolin as a replacement for Jones turns out surprisingly well, and the franchise has its sense of fun back and a good villain. Why is there no UV trilogy boxed set without the toy? Shot on 35mm .

All That Heaven Allows - 4/5

A good looking upper class widow in her 40's falls in love with a younger man who makes a living & enjoys working as a gardener. This difference in age and social status is frowned upon by the locals and the woman's two adult children. A beautiful looking film from Douglas Sirk that beneath its melodramatic surface is critical of 1950's small town America.

Kill the Messenger (2014) theatrically. A largely one-sided, by-the-numbers account of Gary Webb's 1996 exposition of drug smuggling and the CIA. Renner shows a bit more range than I thought he was capable of (and, to be honest, I didn't recognize him or Paz Vega at first), but it's nothing that hasn't been done before, and The Insider did it better.

Ace in the Hole - 4.5/5

After being driven out of his previous jobs, a low life reporter who will do anything to get a big story lands a job in Albuquerque. On his way to an assignment, he stumbles upon an accident and decides exploit the situation to his advantage. More than sixty years later, Billy Wilder's scathing critique of the media and how it manipulates the gullible public still packs a powerful message.
