Antichrist - 5/5

After the death of their child, a couple tries to heal their wounds by retreating to an isolated cabin in the woods. Their healing eventually turns into a nightmare as repressed animosity starts to manifest in explosions of sexual violence. A daring and shocking film in which Lars Von Trier tries to exorcise his inner demons. Lots of credit due to Charlotte Gainsbourg & Willem Dafoe for their daring performances.

Gigantic - 2.5/5

A New York mattress salesman obsessed with adopting a Chinese baby falls for the daughter of a customer with back problems.
Quirky indie romantic comedy that starts out good and then doesn't know where to go.

Murder At 1600 (Starz/Encore).

I suspect I am not the only person on DVD Talk that feels that this movie is long overdue to get the blu ray treatment.

The quality of the films is a definitely better this time around, but none come close to the impact of Timo Tjahjanto's (L Segment) from the first film. Though Chris Nash's (Z Segment) comes pretty close in the new film.

Compared to the first film, there are more that succeed than fail.

Wyatt Earp - 1.5/5

Biopic of the legendary lawman from childhood to gunslinger. An overlong, bland and boring film with an amazing cast filled with incompetent acting, corny dialogue and heavy handed use of the score. The underused Dennis Quaid as Doc Holliday shines when given screen time making the rest of the cast look like amateurs. You know you're in trouble in a biopic when a supporting character is more interesting than the lead.

Gone Girl - 4.5/5

A man becomes the prime suspect when his wife disappears on their fifth wedding anniversary. Excellent film about how the way things seem are more important than what they are, where the court of public opinion's verdict trumps all.

Gamera vs. Guiron (1969)

Gamera fights a giant gila monster or shark thing with a steak knife for a nose and does gymnastics on a pole and some weird alien women who look like they stepped out of a Flash Gordon serial kidnap some kids and shave their heads to eat their brains and oh my god my brain is turning into yogurt after five of these movies in a row and oh Jesus Christ there's three more.

It obviously never occurred to me as a kid, but as an adult, when I see the knife-headed monster and brain-eating aliens, I have to wonder if copious consumption of illegal substances was somehow involved in the creation of said low-budget film.

The Straight Story - 4.5/5

Simple yet touching film based on a true story about an Iowa man in his 70's and his journey to make amends with his brother in Wisconsin who recently had a stroke. Due to his age, poor health and unability to drive he decides to travel on a riding lawn mower. On his way he meets new people and through convesation we get to know more about his past. A very pleasant surprise with a different approach from David Lynch with a great performance from Richard Farsworth.
