Kojak - S: Vin Diesel
'Kojak' remake in the works with Vin Diesel as the NYPD detective made famous by Telly Savalas
Break out the lollipops!
Universal Pictures is fast-tracking a “Kojak” remake with Vin Diesel playing the tough-talking New York detective made famous by the equally bald Telly Savalas, Deadline.com reported.
“Skyfall” screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade – who are a hot property having penned the last five James Bond films – have been tapped to update the popular police procedural that ran on CBS from 1973-1978 into a film, according to the report.
Diesel, who would also be a producer on the film, has just wrapped “Fast & Furious 6,” the latest installment in his popular car chase franchise, and “Riddick,” revisiting the character he made famous in 2000’s “Pitch Black.”
The 45-year-old action star has a tough fedora to fill, considering a television “Kojak” remake starring Ving Rhames only lasted for a cup of coffee in 2005.
But Diesel has a major advantage: like both Savalas and the fictional Kojak, he’s a genuine New Yorker.

Re: Vin Diesel is...Kojak. Shieeeeeet!
hrm...interesting casting. Could rock it well. One problem w/ the article.
...yeah...that's not a good thing for the most part. Casino Royale and (especially) Skyfall rocked well. Quantum of Solace is a mixed bag. And the last 2 Brosnan Bonds weren't good.

It works for me. Rather clever casting. Seems so obvious reading it yet if asked who I'd cast in the part I doubt I would have thought of Vin.

I realize that you were only pasting the article title from the source, but could please correct the name? It's Telly, not Terry.

Casting sounds good, but I'm sure the film will be something like Sam Jackson's Shaft, passable but inherently weak and hardly worth revisting.

EXCLUSIVE: Who loves ya, baby? Philip Gawthorne has been tapped to write the screenplay for Kojak, Universal Pictures’ modern-day film adaptation of the classic TV series. Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious) will produce with Samantha Vincent for their Universal-based One Race Films alongside Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark, who board the project with their Universal-based Bluegrass Films banner. Kojak is intended to be a starring vehicle for Diesel, who most recently starred in Furious 7, with worldwide grosses of more than $1.5 billion.
The original series, a Universal Television library title, aired on CBS from 1973-1978 and starred Telly Savalas as the lollypop-sucking Lt. Theo Kojak. Gawthorne re-imagine the project into a character-driven franchise. James Bond scribes Neal Purvis & Robert Wade wrote a previous draft of the screenplay.
British writer Gawthorne, who began his career as an English playwright and whose previous credits include several long-running BBC series such as Eastenders, Casualty and Holby City, is much in demand. He is currently writing the Cube remake for Lionsgate with Roy Lee and Jon Spaihts producing and is also behind the spec World Breaker, the much-vaunted medieval-action epic being developed with and co-written by William Eubank (The Signal).
Universal SVP Production Kristin Lowe and Director of Development Jay Polidoro will oversee the project for the studio. Gawthorne is repped by CAA, 42 in the UK and Bloom Hergott.

I just hope this gives Vin the opportunity for a little more drama and a little less action. He's not that bad of an actor when he wants to be (see FIND ME GUILTY).
