re: Clerks III (2022, D: Kevin Smith)

Everyone is mention that Smith's pot habit is what's causing his output to suffer, but I'd argue that the failure of Jersey Girl is what caused him to regress as a filmmaker. It was the first time that he tried to break out of his usual fare, but it got overshadowed by the Ben Affleck/Jennifer Lopez drama and ultimately rejected by his fanbase. After that he went back to the same old stuff that he was doing and never looked back.

I would argue that none of them show any growth as a filmmaker from a technical standpoint, and at least Jersey Girl looked more theatrical than any of his other films (which he would probably agree with).

But, I think, in a lot of ways, Smith ended up being a regressive filmmaker. His follow-up to Clerks, Mallrats, felt like generic mid-90s Hollywood fluff that, despite a few laughs in the screenplay, felt very "committee."

His next movie, Chasing Amy, returned to his Clerks comfort zone, which was raw and talky and fly-on-the-wall.

I realize a lot of folks here liked Dogma, but I think that was his ultimate fall as an artist. On one hand, it's sort of an interesting genre movie, but the religion themes he's playing with don't really work with the parade of dick jokes and shit monsters. It's ulitimately, like Mallrats, too polished-looking for its own good, and feels cartoony when it shouldn't. It's like a Troma movie with a Hollywood budget.

His Jay and Silent Bob stuff, outside of Clerks, too often comes off as indulgent and inside-jokey, and it's not surprising that it flounders at the box office.

I did like Zack and Miri Make a Porno, though. It mostly felt like a return to form; relationship troubles, a constant stream of scatology and sex jokes, character study.

I really think Smith should have stuck with writing, which is his strongest talent, or maybe gotten into producing, because he just feels like a one-trick pony as an auteur director.
I agree with all of the above. I also thought that Red State was sorely underrated and showed a side of his talent that I'd never seen before. If I had seen the film without knowing that he was the director, I would never have guessed that he was responsible for it.

I agree that Red State was good and itís a shame that it didnít help Smith propel his career/filmmaking abilities.

Oh shit I forgot about Red State. I liked that at the time.

Red State, like Tusk, etc., falls apart before the end.
It's a pattern of Smith's.
I don't know why exactly...his stuff definitely comes across as half-baked (pun intended).
It's as though he is more of an "idea guy," rather than a craftsman.

For reason I can't understand Tusk deeply disturbed me, in a way I haven't felt sense watching The Shining for the first time. Not saying it is on that level but I thought it was a very underrated horror movie. Especially for something that came from him and his Producer smoking pot and thinking up a wacky story on a podcast.

It was "disturbing" and underrated...right up until he throw it all out the window with his ridiculous juvenile ending (I guess he couldn't help himself).
After hanging with the story for an hour and 40 minutes only to pull the rug out, and essentially say to the audience it was all B.S. and never meant to be a serious attempt at a horror movie.
Yeah, well, F.U. too Kevin.

Wow, that sounds pretty cool. Then again, this could end up on the pile of a dozen other projects that never came to fruition for Smith.

Well, he finally achieved his goal of working for Netflix; he's been pitching stuff to them for years now and was always turned down.

So now he's relegated to doing children's programming?

If Smith is anything, he is the 2nd best self-promoter in the country...

For me, itís that character being in a helpless situation. And body mutilation always gets to me.

I thought Tusk scratched the surface of being disturbing but Smith's lack of gravitas and inexperience in the genre really held it back from being truly disturbing.

Maybe he'll get it right with "Moose Jaws."

3 CLERKS! Thanks to the good folks at @leeloomultiprops, I got to see Randal! #JeffAnderson, @jaymewes, and I spent Saturday signing stuff and catching up, seeing so much movie merch that’s been made over the last 25 years (hit the Leloo site for sweet signed skateboards)! But even better than that? We talked about making a movie together. It’ll be a movie that concludes a saga. It’ll be a movie about how you’re never too old to completely change your life. It’ll be a movie about how a decades-spanning friendship finally confronts the future. It’ll be a movie that brings us back to the beginning - a return to the cradle of civilization in the great state of #newjersey. It’ll be a movie that stars Jeff and @briancohalloran, with me and Jay in supporting roles. And it’ll be a movie called CLERKS III! To be great is to go on. To go on is to go far. To go far is to return. And we’re all gonna return to the scene of the crime! This won’t be the old script we almost made a few years back: this is a completely new screenplay that I just started writing last night! And so far, it’s like a dream come true! After mending fences with @benaffleck earlier this year, I was hoping for a chance to do the same with Jeff - so huge thanks to Leeloo Multiprops for getting us all in the same room. But the biggest thanks ever go to Jeff, for being receptive to the idea at all. This means I’m gonna get to play with my two favorite inaction figures again: Dante & Randal! Two weeks from the debut of @jayandsilentbob Reboot (on @fathomevents screens 10/15 & 10/17, link in my bio), I’m ecstatic to announce our imminent return to Quick Stop! So I assure you: we’re open! #KevinSmith #clerks3 #jaymewes #jayandsilentbob #danteandrandal #quickstop #leeloomultiprops #indiefilm #clerks

Not even a completed script, yet.

I like the first Clerks and it’s sequel. There was a 12 year gap between those films. This will be a minimum 14 year gap. If it’s a good film I think the whole thing will be wonderful. Like Linkletter’s Befor/After movies, but with dick jokes.

Wasn't the original Clerks III script the "best ever" or something? One thing Smith excels at is hyperbole.

I enjoyed Clerks II until the ending, which wasn't my cup of tea. The whole idea of that "payoff" repulses me...

Thatís crazy to think about. It seems like Clerks was so long ago and Clerks 2 was fairly recent. It seems strange that the gap between 2 and 3 will be bigger than between 1 and 2.
