Currently at 6% on RT after 16 reviews.
It's not often I want a film to bomb...but I am hoping this one does it hard.

This movie looks like some cheap garbage you would find on the SYFY channel.

But seriously, I think the studios are (slowly) learning their lesson with this clown. This time around he's not part of the advertising campaign at all, whereas with previous releases his name was all over everything.

The reviews are civil. It'll have a low RT score but doesn't seem like "worst of the year" fodder.
I was hoping it'd be another total turkey, every year needs one.

I just don't get why the studios continue to roll the dice on M. Night Shyamalan by giving him big budget films. He has had at least four turkeys in a roll. At some point, you gotta stop taking a loss on the guy and let him make indie films or something.
This movie looks like some cheap garbage you would find on the SYFY channel.

The fact remains that Amy Pascal still sucks on Will Smith's dick by allowing him to push his kid and production company is the problem. Will holds the studio hostage with his crap, just like Adam Sandler does.
Overbrook will probably spin this as M. Night's fault which is probably why they chose him.

While I don't want to defend MNS, I think this outing was more of him being a director for hire. I think most blame for this can be placed on Will Smith. Given that Sony financed this, I would guess this is part of the deal they made for MiB 3.

........Give Will Smith additional credit for being a loyal and supportive father. And now he needs to do the right thing and tell the young boy, who turns 15 in July, that he ought to buckle down in his studies and be prepared to go into another line of work.

......I guess if this film has managed to accomplish anything, it's that it turned the always charismatic Will Smith into an emotionless ass....
.....Then there's Jaden, who's put in the horrible position of playing opposite his father's dead-behind-the-eyes performance. It's no fault of his own his character is a brat, but it's baffling to believe anyone would think an audience would want to watch a whiny little teenager go through puberty while searching for a rescue beacon while his father plays the human-embodiment of HAL?

Lou Lumenick gave it one star in the New York Post:

Here are the first two paragraphs:
http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainmen...Kp0uVswpzoPZCK
Here are the first two paragraphs:
May cause extreme drowsiness’’ reads the flashing warning on a pain killer that Will Smith takes after breaking both legs in his new movie — a caution that applies equally to “After Earth.’’
Basically, this is Smith and his real-life son, Jaden (both affecting ridiculous mid-Atlantic accents) talking the audience to death for something like 90 minutes before the closing credits.
I’m giving it one star because Smith’s longtime enablers at Sony apparently encouraged him to whittle this humorless sci-fi epic down from a much longer movie.

I thought this was going to be horrible when I just thought it was a Jaden Smith vehicle. Now I'm finding out that Shyamalan is involved? This could be the worst crap ever.

Damn, Shyamalan's been on a losing streak since 2002 (Signs). From Rottentomatoes:
2013 12% After Earth
2010 6% The Last Airbender
2008 17% The Happening
2006 24% Lady in the Water
2004 43% The Village
2002 74% Signs
2000 68% Unbreakable
1999 85% The Sixth Sense
2013 12% After Earth
2010 6% The Last Airbender
2008 17% The Happening
2006 24% Lady in the Water

What do you give the kid who has everything? His own summer action-adventure blockbuster, of course.
That’s exactly what Will Smith has done for his 14-year-old son, Jaden, with After Earth, a sci-fantasy film based on a story idea by the elder Smith and starring father and son — though Dad definitely has the supporting role. Well, it certainly beats a cake and a card, but considering what a well-crafted bore After Earth turns out to be, perhaps not by much.

Re: After Earth (Shyamalan, Will Smith, Jaden Smith 2013) New, Rumors, Cast
I'm just baffled that so many people didn't flat out assume that this move would sucks in the first place. From the entire Smith family influence that just rubs me the wrong way to the awful CGI to the trailer being all over the map and the awful performances just shown in the trailer by the two leads, it all added up to a stinkfest. I wrote this one off even before I realized that M. Night was involved at all - once I realized he was not only just involved but directed it AND co-wrote the screenplay, well, that just cemented it for me. There was way too much going against this one that no matter who the co-/screenwriter was it didn't stand a chance in hell.
I'd like to know just how deep the involvement for both Whitta and MNS went. Did they actually sit down and write it together? Did it start with GW and then MNS took control? Was it the other way around? Knowing what I hear about MNS, I can't help but place the majority of the blame on him. He sucks, he is a on trick pony who got lucky once only because of a twist and he has sucked almost since the very start of his career, and he isn't ever going to rebound.
I'd like to hear from GW, or someone behind the scenes. I know nothing of the project but I'd bet just about anything that this started with Smith doing the smart thing and bringing GW on, and it was going just fine, and then for one reason or another MNS was brought in to totally poison anything that was positive about the project from the inside out. I love the concept, I loved the idea when I first heard of it, and I'm pretty flippin' pissed off that MNS was able to somehow get his worthless and talentless hands on this one.

I was looking forward to this, but somehow the fact that M. Knight was directing eluded me. Now I have NO desire to see it. Says a lot about the shitfests he's churned out lately.

I haven't looked forward to a Will Smith movie since Bad Boys 2, his career really went to his head.

You guys are harsh.
As bad as "The Happening" was, I think it's still 70% intriguing. It was those directional misfires (the lady in the house, the kid getting killed, a few of the murder/deaths) that made it as hokey as the Wicker Man remake. I thought all of the stuff with the evacuation and the inescapable, invisible enemy was pretty solid.
I still think After Earth looks pretty good. Not terribly excited about it. But it looks alright.
I don't know. Maybe I just enjoy M. Night's quiet and subdued style more than most people. I couldn't watch it all the time. But I enjoy a new M. Night movie every few years.
