IGN: 20 Great Films You May Have Missed In 2012

They have comments at the website, but here's the list in alphabetical order.

The Angel's Share
Antiviral
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Bullhead
Citadel
Cockneys vs Zombies
Coriolanus
Frankenweenie
God Bless America
Goon
Headhunters
The Imposter
The Innkeepers
Robot & Frank
Safety Not Guaranteed
Searching for Sugarman
Seven Psychopaths
Sightseers
Sound of my Voice
Wild Bill

Which have you seen, what do you think of the list, and what are some overlooked gems from 2012 that aren't here?

I've seen 5 of them and I'll agree with Robot and Frank. Refreshing to see a movie set in the near future where everything hasn't burned down or looks messed up.

Edit to add what I've seen:

Beasts of the Southern Wild
Frankenweenie
Robot & Frank
Safety Not Guaranteed
Seven Psychopaths

Planning on Searching for Sugarman soon.

Not a terrible list, though The Innkeepers sucked.

I enjoyed Goon as good bit, Headhunters was solid and Safety Not Guaranteed was a great little flick.

Re: IGN: 20 Great Films You May Have Missed In 2012

I was looking for a list like this just the other day. I usually only get out to the movies to see the higher profile Hollywood franchise stuff because my wife doesn't love going to the movies (too expensive for her liking) and my friends usually aren't into indie/foreign stuff. Compound that with the fact that my Netflix queue is pretty much devoted to my endless quest to catch up on 100 years of film history and the result is too often I miss out on the smaller stuff.

I can't say if this is a goof list or not. I've only seen one (Safety Not Guaranteed which I really liked) and I'm not even familiar with 6 or 7 of them. Sound of My Voice is next on my Netflix queue and I'm eagerly awaiting The Imposter to come out on dvd. Hopefully I can catch up with a few more before the 2013 list gets too long and I can come back and comment on them.

I missed most of them except for The Innkeepers which I liked quite a bit. I saw about half of Goon on one of the premium channels and it seemed okay. I woudn't mind seeing Frankenweenie, God Bless America, and Seven Pyschopaths.

God Bless America wasn't really worth watching. Some of those movies need to be missed.

No more than something like Battleship, though.

Re: IGN: 20 Great Films You May Have Missed In 2012

I've only seen two of them - Safety Not Guaranteed and Beasts of the Southern Wild - and I liked them both, though Beasts considerably more than Safety.

A few others have been on my "to watch" list:

The Angel's Share (I usually like Loach - but afaik this still hasn't gotten a US release)
Bullhead
Frankenweenie
The Imposter
Robot & Frank
Seven Psychopaths
Sound of my Voice (co-written by and starring Brit Marling from Another Earth, which is enough to make me want to see it)

Coriolanus

Goon
Headhunters
The Imposter
The Innkeepers
Safety Not Guaranteed
Sound of my Voice
Wild Bill

I've seen those.

The rest are on my list. Not a bad list.

Coriolanus
God Bless America
Goon
Headhunters
Safety Not Guaranteed
Seven Psychopaths

Seen those. I would add the following to the list if I had created it: Cloud Atlas, Jeff, Who Lives At Home, We Need To Talk About Kevin, End of Watch.

Beasts of the Southern Wild
Coriolanus
God Bless America
Goon
Safety Not Guaranteed
Seven Psychopaths

Of those, I was not impressed with Beasts of the Southern Wild. Goon and God Bless America were alright, not amazing. The other three were all very good to excellent.

It's on Netflix I fell asleep halfway. I get the whole reality tv celebs, people that text, etc. are the decay of culture and after the violence factor the movie was just meh.

End of Watch actually did respectable in theaters. Not great, but better than all of these other titles.

How was Jeff Who Lives at Home in comparison to other Duplass Bros movies? I was bored to tears by Do-Deca-Pentathlon and Cyrus, but admit the trailers for Jeff WLAH look decent.

Frankenweenie
God Bless America
The Innkeepers

For myriad reasons, I really loved all 3 of these. I'd like to see more on that list, hopefully as they're added to Netflix or On Demand.

I haven't seen that first film you mentioned, but if you didn't like Cyrus you probably won't like Jeff Who Lives At Home. I'd rate them evenly (obviously I liked them both). They have that same quirkiness and style that is the Duplass Brother's signature. I would say that Jeff Who Lives At Home isn't as improvised as Cyrus though, more scripted.

Of that list, I've only seen God Bless America, and it was very good but nowhere near as good as I wanted it to be.

But at least it provides a list of stuff to check out, catch-as-catch-can, 54-40 or BRAINS
