Wow, interesting. I guess your thinking is that Hooper won't win for Directing because he just won 2 years ago, and the acting wing helps Les Mis win Best Picture. Yet, it won't win for Screenplay because there's not much to adapt from a stage show? I suppose it's possible, but to see 4 different films win those categories is highly unlikely.

Unless I missed a year when I checked, that kind of spread hasn't happened since 1940, for which Rebecca won BP, John Ford won Directing for The Grapes of Wrath, The Great McGinty won Original Screenplay, and The Philadelphia Story won Adapted Screenplay. However, if this counts, for 1952 they had separate categories for "Screenplay," "Story and Screenplay," and "Story." The BP winner The Greatest Show on Earth won for Story.

Re: Your Oscar Predictions (2013 Edition)

I still think Phoenix will win Best Actor for The Master. Obviously, it's not that great of film overall, but I'm sure we'll appreciate it in 25 years.

I just don't think the Academy will give DDL another Oscar this soon.

maybe I should be doing what Entertainment Weekly does and have two separate films: 'should win' / 'will win' - my list tends to be the former.

I think that most Hollywood folk like the 'Hollywood/History lesson' aspect of 'Argo' and Affleck will get at least the win in this respect - but I think that since a film version of the Les Mis has been long in the making and from what I've been seeing of the trailers, Hooper's style and the iconic songs I believe will push it towards becoming best picture.

The girl who played the drug addict on Flight was really good, I would be surprised if she wasn't nominated.

I would completely shocked if DDL does not win. It was one of the best performances I have ever seen.

I predict...that Seth McFarlane will have at least one musical number where he will sing in the style of Frank Sinatra.

Re: Your Oscar Predictions (2013 Edition)

A few notes. I know Waltz winning would give him 2 quick Oscars, but I think his BAFTA win gave him some momentum. I have Argo winning 4, including Sound Editing. I think most voters will just check the film they like most in this category. I would not be surprised if Silver Linings Playbook has a big night. I'm going with Lee for Director, so I've chosen it for most of the tech categories and have it winning 5 Oscars to lead the night.

The only other time Tarantino won the Golden Globe and BAFTA for Screenplay in the same year was for Pulp Fiction. He's won those 2 again this year for Django. I think he'll take the Oscar again as another consolation prize.

I'm 99% sure Argo will win Picture. But, if there was some sort of crazy, last minute shift, I think Silver Linings Playbook would be the winner. It did recently beat Argo for Adapted Screenplay at the BAFTA. That' about the only major award Argo lost. Of course, Argo still won the BAFTA for Picture/Director. I just want something exciting to happen Sunday.

Re: Your Oscar Predictions (2013 Edition)

I agree with those who are picking Emmanuelle Riva to win Best Actress...it's just one hell of a performance. Nothing to do with her age or her "last chance" to win an Oscar. It's just far and away the best pick of the five nominees.

I also think Ang Lee MIGHT upset Spielberg for Best Director, but I think it's a 50/50 proposition at this point.

Would be nice to see DeNiro top Jones for Best Supporting, but I don't think that's going to happen.

Re: Your Oscar Predictions (2013 Edition)

For me it's just gut instinct, but I don't think Argo will win Best Picture despite all its momentum. Went with Zero Dark Thirty, even though many would say Lincoln or Silver Linings if not Argo.

Despite Argo's momentum I think Lincoln will still win Best Picture further proving how out of touch Oscar voters are.
