Re: Essential holiday viewing at your house?
I don't know why but I've always been partial to the Mr. Magoo Christmas Carol, where we're watching a play being performed by Magoo as Scrooge.
Does anyone know why the Family Circus Christmas Special never runs? I remember it as a kid. They lost an ornament and the ghost of the dead grandfather helped the younger son find it. He almost fell and got badly hurt and the father, awakened by his noise, made a diving catch to save him.

This thread reminds me to FINALLY watch Elf next month (Memorable for it's DVDtalk-member cameo....Even though he hasn't been on this site for years)

The Scrooge movies have always been my biggest property whenever it comes to Xmas viewing. I love (Nearly) all of them:
Scrooge (1935)-Finally saw the uncut version last year.
Scrooged-I expected a lot more when I first saw this in theaters. Since then, It's become perfect to me now.
A Christmas Carol (1938)-This has always been my most favorite of the classic versions. Sorry, but I find the much-beloved Alastair Sim version to be sloooow.
Diva's Christmas Carol-C'mon! It's got John frickin' Taylor as the Ghost of Xmas Present!!!
Mickey's Christmas Carol-Even though ABCFamily edits the hell out of this, for some odd reason.
A Christmas Carol-George C. Scott/Patrick Stewart-It's nice to see the Scott version re-appear on TV lately (I think BBC plays it) but I'd love to see the Stewart version air more often. The scene where he regains his laughter is one helluva moment.

Christmas Vacation is pretty much the only one, unless I can find my disc of Charlie Brown's Christmas. The old claymation Christmas videos are cool, but I generally forget about them until after Christmas.

MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS is a must-see. As is THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER and BABES IN TOYLAND.
I'm a little over A CHRISTMAS STORY but I still watch it every year. I managed to go my entire life without seeing IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE until about 2-3 years ago, and while I enjoyed it, I don't have a sentimental attachment to it.
The BLACKADDER CHRISTMAS SPECIAL is holy, if only for the line "may the yuletide log slip from your fire and burn your house down". The way Stephen Fry delivers that line should be studied by comedic actors for decades.

SCROOGED is an awesome satire. I didn't love it when I was younger but the older I get the more relative it becomes partially because TV really has become as dumb as the spoof shows in the movie.

Re: Essential holiday viewing at your house?
I try to catch all the usual Christmas favorites. I tried Love Actually last year after reading all the recommendations here, but it didn't feel Christmasy enough to me. But strangely enough we really like watching Little Lord Fauntleroy (1936), which doesn't have any Christmas at all. Maybe because it has the same sort of sentimentality as Its a Wonderful Life.

I love how Die Hard has become a mainstream Christmas staple at this point.
I'll watch that, Bad Santa or Elf. I need to give The Ice Harvest another go too.

Moonstruck: not really about Christmas, but wintery and about family.
Where Eagles Dare: again, not about Christmas, but the untimate winter action movie.
Elf: the kids love it
