Which Director Would/Wouldn't You Like to Make a Bond Movie?

I posted in the reviews thread how I felt hiring a notable director to do a Bond movie seemed to make a difference. Past Bond movies had what could be deemed noteworthy directors in a sense (Michael Apted, Marc Forster), but for the most part they've pretty much been hired guns(no pun intended, I think). Given most of the reviews and box-office, it seems it worked. Before anyone says it's the franchise name, I will say most were left underwhelmed by QoS and if this had gotten similar reviews, I doubt it would be succeeding at its current level. I feel Mendes was definitely set on crafting a good movie first and foremost, and the Bond elements the fell into place.

If the studio decides to continue the trend of hiring noteworthy directors to do these movies, who would you want to see make one? Likewise, who would you not want to see in a 100+ mile radius of a Bond movie?

My picks:

Christopher Nolan-obviously this would be everyone's dream director, and I know he would do the series justice as he has stated how much he loves it.

Danny Boyle- I think he has already directed Craig as Bond for the Olympics ceremony, so he would make sense.

Matthew Vaughn-Craig's role in Layer Cake is widely accredited to landing him the 007 gig. I think this would be a good full-circle approach.

Ridley Scott-kind of iffy on this one. I think he would do a good job, but it might wind up a Ridley Scott movie with James Bond in it as opposed to a James Bond movie directed by Ridley Scott. Plus, he really emphasized visuals over story.

Keep them away:

Michael Bay
Steven Spielberg- he's just no the right fit
Quentin Tarantino-maybe do a James Bond homage, but not an actual movie
Simon West
John Woo

I would still love to see:

Tarantino's take on Casino Royale, as he originally wanted, despite the fact I'm very happy with the Craig Casino Royale (one of the best of the franchise).

Ridley Scott - Would deliver on the visuals and is generally good at characterizations, I say yes to him.

Joe Wright - Yeah he mostly directs period pieces but I think he could do pretty well with a Bond flick, and the movie would look great.

Currently say no to:

Matthew Vaughn - I don't think much of him as a director having found Layer Cake and Stardust tremendously boring, with both Kickass and X-men FC being fun but somewhat sloppy movies.

Christopher Nolan - He's a solid director when it comes to telling stories, but he tends to skimp on characterization and his action sequences are lacking, the Bond-esque snow level in Inception was the worst part of that movie.

Rob Cohen - Simply awful

Marc Forster - QoS was bad but I'm sick of studios trying to make him an action movie director, he's terrible at it.

Maybe:

Gareth Evans - Great at action scenes, haven't seen anything else though

David Fincher - It'd be a very dark Bond movie, visually at least.

It's a fine line to walk. On one hand, a better director will likely get you a better movie. But a hired gun may make the overall series more uniform, which is very important to keep a certain tone going. A series will be awkward if you've got a couple of oddball entries, either good or bad.

Wasn't it awkward going from Chris Columbus to Alfonso Cuaron in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban? Now Cuaron is an excellent director and that movie is the favorite for a lot of people, but there's an awkward tonal shift along with the change to his style.

Now that's not a total dealbreaker, and frankly we've already seen worse shifts between the Bond movies. There's a hell of a range in there.

But if we get a flipping amazing director at the helm, it might feel more like one of their movies than it would a Bond movie. It couldn't be a director with too distinctive a style like Tarantino, as much as I love his work.

Keep Kevin Smith away from this franchise!

I've heard that they'll only allow British directors do a Bond movie.

My vote would be for Edgar Wright!

Only need to go back one movie to disprove that.

John Hyams: simply tossing his name in there to beat Snake to the punch. But he would make for some excellent action.

Christopher Nolan: would be great for look and mood but he's still so-so with action.

Joss Whedon: the cinematography would be lacking but the character interactions and intensity would be there, along with some great quips (assuming he has a hand in the script).

Brad Bird: M:i-GP was essentially a modern take of old school Bond so he'd be great in this franchise.

Pedro Almodóvar: probably just a pipe dream but I would love to see him tackle a Bond movie.

How about letting someone who is not English or American direct.
Nah forget it, probably would not make a difference since the Broccoli family would not give free reign to some "crazy" foreigner.

Hahaha. Hyams. I do love his action so much. C'mon, Sly. Get him for EX3. You need a director who really really knows how to make action that packs a punch.

Nolan I'd enjoy

I'd really really like Tarantino do a Bond film. More so if he literally adapted the books. I don't think I'd like him for a modern Bond but an old school Bond that lovingly used the books...fuck, yes.

Cuaron would be interesting. He's a fucking master of making that camera do things (even in the edit room)

I think Joe Wright would be a very good director for Bond. I can't say why I just think he would rock it. The man has shown he can make thrilling action moments, look at Hanna. Also..that film would be soooo pretty. Added on that..probably a lively color palette as well.

Danny Boyle would also be pretty fresh in a way. He's a guy that jumps genres...but he does it well. He could probably make some very tense and exciting action work in there.

I know a few of you have said you wouldn't like to see Spielberg direct a Bond picture but he's said several times he wanted to in the 70s and that's when Lucas told him his idea for Indiana Jones (Smith). There's a part of me who wants to know what his vision for Bond was back when he was young and hungry and if he'd be willing to explore that part of who he was as a young director in light of the sort of director / Hollywood figure he's become today.

I also think a Danny Boyle directed James Bond film could be really amazing.

The film track record those guys have (except for Once Were Warriors) they might as well be English/American.

I am referring to someone like Chan-wook Park.

No, because Cuaron made a great film whereas Columbus made two lackluster films because he's a no-talented hack. Up until the release of the last film, Prisoner of Azkaban was considered by the vast majority to be the ultimate Potter film. Columbus did shit with the two films he was involved with whereas Cuaron raised the bar and ended up setting the tone for which Mike Newell and David Yates would follow.

My wife and I were just re-watching Chamber of Secrets the other night on ABC Family as there was nothing else on television and it didn't age well. Columbus has never been a competent director and it shows compared to the latter output of the franchise.

I'd like to see a Tsui Hark Bond film.

Definitely not Nolan. Inception was bad enough.

I'm gonna go with Danny Boyle, Wong Kar-Wai (his BMW film was arguably the best one) and Abbas Kiarostami.
