Favorite Bond Film and Why?

simple as that, which is your favorite of the 24 (not including the original Casino Royale, but including the unofficial NSNA)?

Craig's Casino Royale for me. An almost perfect movie for me and most watched on any of my movies since 2006. Just love this one so much.

Re: Favorite Bond Film?

I'll go with OHMSS.

Rounding out my top 5 would be You Only Live Twice, Man with the Golden Gun, Goldeneye and Skyfall.

Re: Favorite Bond Film?

From Russia With Love is my pick. It's before the films insisted on being "big" so it sticks fairly close to Ian Fleming. And it's probably the only one that seems like an actual "spy film" instead of being more like a travelogue titled "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang's Exotic Vacation" like most Bond films made after this one.

Re: Favorite Bond Film?

From Russia With Love is a perfect movie, and the greatest of the Bonds. IMO of course. But it's pretty much THE most accurate Fleming adaptation ever.

So far... Skyfall is my #2. But I'm still high from it.

Re: Favorite Bond Film?

OHMSS. I love the winter locales. I think it has the best story. I think Diana Rigg is the best Bond girl. And it had the best ending, featuring the only truly poignant moment in the entire series. Hell, George is even alright, and I think it worked for this movie that Bond was different.

Those factors get it the win by nose over FRWL and Goldfinger which flip flop at 2 and 3 depending on my mood. FRWL is a leaner, meaner well cast film. Goldfinger is more entertaining.

Conveniently, my favorite Bond film is also the best Bond film: From Russia With Love.

Re: Favorite Bond Film?

I voted for Licence To Kill even though that one and Dr. No are equally my favorite Bond movies.

Timothy Dalton is my favorite Bond, and I just wish that he could have done at least one more Bond movie.

My Top 5 Bond movies would probably look like this...

1. Licence To Kill
1. Dr. No
3. From Russia With Love
4. For Your Eyes Only
5. The Living Daylights

I prefer the less outrageous Bond movies, the ones more grounded in reality, although I like all the Bond movies in varying degrees.

I'm going to see Skyfall today, so we'll see how that one fits in. Casino Royale was great, but Quantum Of Solace was just OK.

Re: Favorite Bond Film?

I'll never get the love for Goldfinger. Bond is fairly inept in that one. He gets captured, has to be rescued by others, and someone else saves the day. He doesn't really do a whole heck of a lot in this one. It's OK, but in the top 5 or top 10? Not for me.

But if you love it more power to you. It is an iconic movie. Just why I'll never understand...

Re: Favorite Bond Film?

Licence to Kill, followed by OHMSS.

Worst - Die Another Day
Most underrated - Quantum of Solace/Octopussy
Most overrated - GoldenEye - Tomorrow Never Dies is the only Brosnan one I was a fan of.

Re: Favorite Bond Film?

The best:
OHMSS: a human Bond, the best Bond villain in Telly Savales and his wierd way of holding a cigarette, the classic European Bond setting, fantastic action sequences and editing, the best Bond girl ever in Diana Rigg (she can actually act!) and a plot that keeps moving.

The most underrated:
For Your Eyes Only: an aging Bond but Moore at the height of his powers, the best Bond sidekick in Columbo, the hottest Bond girl ever bar none, a striped down plot with minimal sillyness, great settings (Greece and Adriatic), some terrific car chases and some great underwater stuff. The best Bond theme song ever as well.

I have a soft spot for:
Diamonds are Forever: entirely tongue in cheek, self-mocking, sarcastic and playful. Total bizarre, borderline offensive hit men. Sweet early seventies settings. A monotone guy saying "twenty seconds, and counting" into a microphone. Perfect scenery chewing by Charles Gray. Some of the best one liners in any Bond film.

I like all of them to varying degrees, even A View To A Kill.

How is For Your Eyes Only underrated? It's widely considered to be Moore's finest Bond.

Re: Favorite Bond Film?

The one I go back to most if For Your Eyes Only. It's got the perfect balance of cheesiness and grit. It's a blast, loads of energy, again that disco-fied soundtrack, Melina Havelock is hot while still being able to kick your ass.

It's blasphemy but I love the Moore cheeseball entries the most.

Oddly, all the reasons people hate on Moore's movies are the reason I HATE HATE HATE Diamonds Are Forever. Criticize Moonraker's pigeon double-take all you want. DoF has an elephant winning a slot machine jackpot by getting all elephant icons to appear.

I'm going to assume you give 4 out 4 to the rest, because that bunch is (largely) horrible.

Re: Favorite Bond Film?

I'll go on record with my utter bafflement with the massive love for Goldeneye. It always comes across to me as generic, formulaic James Bond; going through the motions without bringing much verve or spark. On its own, it's a decent Bond flick but hardly exemplary. As far as the Brosnans are concerned, I infinitely prefer The World Is Not Enough (which, for some reason, I intensely disliked at first) and I find Tomorrow Never Dies more entertaining overall.

OHMSS would rank higher for me if it wasn't for Lazenby's RIDICULOUS leaping uppercut.

Re: Favorite Bond Film?

Dr. No I guess. Had the journey into mystery vibe. Frwl /ohmss are definitely the most artistically made.

I'd say that The Spy Who Loved me is his most famous turn. However, I guess you're right. Ebert gave FYEO a shitty review so maybe I was assuming that was the general consensus. Maybe it isn't.

The Spy Who Loved Me is his most famous, yes. Many Bond fans (not me) point to FYEO as his best.
