Re: Skyfall (Mendes, 2012) — The Double-O Reviews Thread

Seeing this tomorrow, but I got a quick question for those who have seen it. Do I quickly need to check out casino & quantum to get caught up? Reason why I ask is that I finally watched quantum years after seeing casino and was surprised at all the plot points it made to casino's events.

Previous 007 movies rarely had connecting moments like this.

This film actually makes more references to pre-Craig Bond movies than it does to the two previous Bond films.

QoS was considered a direct sequel to CR and unique to the Bond world. Most other Bond films were standalone.

Re: Skyfall (Mendes, 2012) — The Double-O Reviews Thread

Fuck. Went to see this last night and the theatre was having difficulty with their sound system. No centre channel and no rear surrounds were working... which meant all the action scenes were missing tons of sound effects and the dialogue was WHISPER quiet. They couldn't fix it and unfortunately for me, it wasn't playing anywhere else close at a time for me to make it over there - got a free pass, but ruining a movie experience I've been counting down the minutes to was a huge piss off. I stayed for the whole thing since I was with a big group of friends that I made pony up the extra cash for this particular theatre/screen that I was raving about on the way there...they all thought I was an asshole afterwards

I think the movie was great, but I'll know for sure once I get to see it and actually hear the dialogue without straining.

Damn, good thing they have you a free pass for it. This is definitely not the movie to have lo listen to this in some kind of jacked up mono.

Went to the midnight showing last night and loved it from start to finish. Good acting from everyone all around. I've liked Craig's Bond from the start and he's at his best in this one I thought. Judi Dench was good as always as M too and Bardem made an interesting villain. I also liked the new Q and the fact that they aren't making Bond overly gadget heavy but not ignoring the character either. Overall I really liked it and can't wait to see it again.

Re: Skyfall (Mendes, 2012) — The Double-O Reviews Thread

Kyle Smith gives it a 2-star review in the New York Post:

http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainmen...7BvFTp642vqU4M

Some choice quotes:

But like the Stones, 007 is showing his wrinkles, and in the utterly routine effort “Skyfall,” we’re actually expected to cheer each chord we’ve heard so many times (here’s a martini shaker! Look, it’s a Walther PPK! And there’s an Aston Martin!) We’ve been turned into wretched Pavlovian dogs, salivating at the bell instead of the snack. .
Bond (Daniel Craig) is nearly killed in the opening scene, yet another Third World chase (again, with the motorcycles and the bazaar? Really?) in which 007 inexplicably keeps calling home to the boss, M (Judi Dench), for direction. Guys, James Bond does not use permission slips. Where’s the moment where he throws away his headset and goes it alone, consequences be damned?
Back at MI6 spy HQ in London, there’s a bombing and M gets chastised by her political overseer (Ralph Fiennes), yet when told to resign, she simply refuses, which seems contrary to the British spirit of taking responsibility. A nerdy new Q (the boy-pixie Ben Whishaw) hands Bond his new sidearm . . . in the middle of the National Gallery? These are secret agents? Do they post photos of their kills on Facebook?
“American Beauty” director Sam Mendes, now riding a streak of five bad movies, borrows heavily from “The Dark Knight,” giving Bond a Bruce Wayne back story and a big, silly shootout at a Wayne Manor-like estate. Silva becomes a Joker-ish master of disguise. But there’s no wit or spirit to the action scenes (if you’ve seen the trailer, you’ve seen all of the good stuff in this movie), and the imagination-free script keeps expressing amazement at these things called “computers” that can apparently wreak so much havoc.

Re: Skyfall (Mendes, 2012) — The Double-O Reviews Thread

I thought it was awesome. I loved the element of horror infused into Silva's character. Everyone gasped
Spoiler:
when he removed the inside of his face and it just drooped.
It was pretty nasty. His set-up was done well. I also like how they played Silva's character
Spoiler:
as a possible latent homosexual (or he could have been bi-sexual) during his questioning and examination of Bond.

My one gripe of the film is that the femme fatale of the flick was only in it for like 5 minutes. She was smoking hot. She can use my face as a bicycle seat any day.

Silva's introduction was also pretty rad. I love how he comes down the lift, does his 'rats' monologue while slowly walking to the front - the camera stays absolutely still.

I honestly thought Silva was pretty lame. At least as written. If not for Javier Bardem, I'd forget he even existed.

I thought he was pretty scary. I couldn't figure him out. I know the audience thought he was scary too, because they couldn't figure him out either. I'd agree with Supermallet in saying this was James Bond's Dark Knight.

Yes, one of the best villain intros in the Bond canon. No music, no camera movement, just one man performing.

I honestly felt there was nothing to him beyond Bardem's quirky performance. I didn't find him to be any sort of credible threat. He was just some douche with "mommy" issues.

Meh. I thought it was business as usual as far as pre-Craig Bond movies go.

Re: Skyfall (Mendes, 2012) — The Double-O Reviews Thread

This movie was awesome. This is certainly one of the best Bond flicks. I'd agree with Supermallet about it being up there with OHMSS and FRWL.

This movie was about old meets new with tons of nods to the other flicks. Bardem was terrifying and one of the best Bond villains for sure.

I loved when the old school Aston Martin showed up how the classic Bond theme played.

The ending definitely gave off a Straw Dogs vibe. It seemed strange for a Bond flick but it fit because we were seeing a different side of Bond. I liked how personal this one felt.

Great performances all around.

The very, very end gave me goosebumps. Awesome.

Re: Skyfall (Mendes, 2012) — The Double-O Reviews Thread

Saw it. Overall, it was awesome. It manages to give one everything they want in a traditional Bond movie while simultaneously daring to be different to great effect. An accurate description is that it is more of an action-drama with James Bond than a James Bond movie, but that is its strength. Mendes definitely brings some needed change to the table, especially in terms of drama and how well he seems to know how to work with cinematographers. I guess that one could argue Skyfall completes the Bond "prequel trilogy" in a satisfying manner. Let's be honest, this is the real reboot of the series.

Only two minor gripes:

Spoiler:
CGI Komodo dragons...really? Also, if Bond was tracking Silva, couldn't they have arrived in enough time to save the girl? As it is she pretty much died as a prop.

Skyfall totally buries the abomination that was QOS.

I don't hate QoS (though I do have issues with how the action was shot and edited). And this movie has very little to do with CR or QoS. That's why I made my pre-Craig comment. I enjoyed this movie but it was just old hat since all it did was revisit the Bond films as they were before Craig became Bond. Honestly, although a good movie, it really brought nothing new to the table.

I think it would have sat better with me if they didn't try to cram all the familiar Bond tropes in one go. But I guess that's a result of the whole MGM financial fiasco. I recall originally the plan was to gradually transition Craig into the classic Bond formula. Instead, they clumsily leapt ahead in one go.

The film is well done (in terms of acting, photography, and music) despite a bland script.

Just got back from seeing it. It was a blast. When I went to get our tickets I said "two for the new Bond...James Bond" and the lady groaned. I guess I wasn't the first of the night to think that was funny.

Good movie, but I thought Casino was just a notch above. But you can see Craig as Bond have matured, both as an actor in the role and the character. Props to the Raiders of the Lost Ark inspired scene. My one gripe to add in that I was immediately scratching my head at was:

Spoiler:
When they try and shoot the shot glass from the hot chicks head (gorgeous actress BTW), Bond misses, but when Bardem just shoots her dead, why is she slumped over, but doesn't fall completely to the ground? I know her hands here tied behind her back, but he just shoots her dead. I would have thought she would have just dropped to the ground.

You sure? I thought she was tied around her waist against whatever it was she was standing in front of.

Cool flick, went in a lot of unexpected directions. One question:

Spoiler:
Why does Bond have the Goldfinger Aston-Martin sitting in a garage?

Hate to say it but I pretty much agree. The whole thing just seemed....lacklustre.

I don't get all the worshiping at the altar of Roger Deakins either. The movie looked the same as every other action movie today. Shot digitally and digitally color graded within an inch of its life. Everything has this sickly, dull, greencast look. Gone from movies today are brilliant technicolor hues of the entire spectrum. Everything now must take place inside the Matrix or something.

And why is it that no one can keep the camera still in scenes where two people are just standing or sitting talking to each other? Are they really that rushed they can't do a proper setup for these scenes?
