Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015, D: Abrams, S: The casts of Star Trek, Lost, Felicit
Variety just released the names of five actors who are believed to be at the top of the list for the lead. The article seems to imply these guys are all vying for the same role. Considering two of them are African American, it's safe to assume the new lead is not a Skywalker or a Solo (the article mentions that the Abrams/Kasdan rewrites have reportedly reduced the offspring down to supporting characters).

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015, D: Abrams, S: The casts of Star Trek, Lost, Felicit
The HR article speculates this could be the "Obi-Wan has a black relative" role that was rumored a while back. I know that Abrams wants a diverse cast, but I don't get his thinking if he wants her as a Kenobi. I do think she could make a pretty badass Sith.
I dislike most of these choices as well. I can easily picture Matthew James Thomas as Luke's kid, but it seems this isn't the part he's being considered for. Plemons and Boyega don't really scream "Star Wars lead" to me... at all. Speleers already had his shot at playing a Skywalker clone in "Eragon" and he came off dull as dishwater... and Ray Fisher has (or had?) a large gap in his teeth that would probably distract the hell out of me:
I don't care for any of those choices very much. Plemons is okay but I don't know if I see him in a film like this. Maybe if he's a villain or something but not as a lead hero. John Boyega looks like he could fit in as Lando's kid or something but I don't know how he'd be considered a lead.

Both The Hollywood Reporter and Latino Review are reporting Lupita Nyongo'o (who just won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 12 Years a Slave) has met with Abrams about Episode VII:

She is pretty strikingly beautiful......but can you actually be a female star in 2014 America with smaller than average boobs?

I'd be more excited if they cast Lupita's brother as the new villain: Darth Photobomb

Would be highly surprised if she's a villain... that would bring a ton of uproar from the usual groups.

They were, at least before the Abrams/Kasdan rewrites were announced. I still think we'll see at least one Solo daughter, but I am a bit disappointed at the lack of news/rumors on that front lately. I was actually excited by the prospect of a female Jedi being the main hero of this new trilogy.

Disney and Lucasfilm are excited to announce that principal photography on Star Wars: Episode VII, directed by J.J. Abrams, will commence May 2014, and will be based at London's historic Pinewood Studios.
This will be the first Star Wars film to start shooting in the month of May. Lucasfilm has documented the first day of principal photography for every installment of the Star Wars saga:
March 22, 1976 -- The first day of principal photography in Tozeur, Tunisia, for Star Wars. A crew of 130 ventures into the desert in 42 trucks and cars, including eight army trucks full of equipment. The first shot was completed at 9:35 a.m.
March 5, 1979 -- The first day of principal photography in Finse, Norway, for The Empire Strikes Back. The crew endures the subzero temperatures, frostbite, heavy winds, and avalanches to pull off the first shot within 65 minutes of setup.
January 11, 1982 -- The first day of principal photography at EMI Elstree Studios outside of London for Return of the Jedi. Although inside a studio, the set must weather a sandstorm in a scene that would ultimately be cut from the film.
June 26, 1997 -- The first day of principal photography at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, England, for The Phantom Menace. Ending a long absence from the director's chair, George Lucas shoots a sequence in a bluescreen-lined set with actors Ian McDiarmid and Ray Park.
June 26, 2000 -- The first day of principal photography for Attack of the Clones at Fox Studios Australia. In their new home Down Under, the production crew once again photographs actor Ian McDiarmid three years to the day after Episode I started shooting.
June 30, 2003 -- The first day of principal photography for Revenge of the Sith at Fox Studios Australia. The first scenes shot feature Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor as Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, respectively, along with R2-D2.
It has also been confirmed that Star Wars: Episode VII is set about 30 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, and will star a trio of new young leads along with some very familiar faces. No further details on casting or plot are available at this time.
Star Wars: Episode VII will release in theaters on December 18, 2015.

So within the next few days we should get some casting probably?

New 'Star Wars' film to be set 30 years after 'Return of the Jedi'
(Reuters) - The highly anticipated next installment of the "Star Wars" franchise will be set 30 years after "Episode VI: Return of the Jedi," Walt Disney Co.'s chief executive officer Bob Iger said on Tuesday at the company's annual shareholders meeting.
Disney purchased "Star Wars" production company LucasFilm for $4.05 billion in 2012 and announced it would release three new films in the popular sci-fi series. Fans have been avidly awaiting details of the next film, "Star Wars: Episode VII."
"Return of the Jedi" was the third film in the first trilogy of "Star Wars" released between 1977 and 1983. The series is set in a galaxy far, far away, in the past.
Iger did not reveal any casting news, other than to confirm the return of the robot character R2D2. The official Star Wars website posted on Monday the new films would feature "a trio of new young leads along with some very familiar faces," and that filming would begin in May at London's famed Pinewood studios.
Rumors have swirled for over a year on whether some of the franchise's stars, including Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, would return. Trade magazines have reported that rising stars including Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o and "Girls" actor Adam Driver were being considered.
The "Star Wars" franchise was created by director George Lucas and comprises six films that have grossed more than $4.4 billion at the worldwide box office since the first film was released in 1977.
"Episode VII" will be released on December 18, 2015, and will be directed by J.J. Abrams, who helmed the recent "Star Trek" film franchise reboot.

I just can't believe it's taking place 30 years later when the actors are 30 years older.
Impossible.

You mean to tell me we're expected to believe these actors have only aged 30 years when 32 years have passed in reality?

Do they even talk about "years" in the Star Wars universe? I can't really see why they would have any interest in measuring long periods of time relative to the amount of time it takes the Earth to circle once around the Sun.
