Kill The Irishman -- Ray Stevenson -- 2011
Well, this was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting a mildly entertaining action film, but this is more than that. Much more.
This barely got a theatrical release (56 theaters) last summer and needless to say didn't make much money. It was more or less a straight to video title in the US. It's an excellent little film. First off it has a great cast (Ray Stevenson, Christopher Walken, Val Kilmer, and Vincent D'Onofrio). Stevenson was tremendous in the lead role as Danny Greene. I haven't seen much of him besides "Punisher: War Zone" and as the lead in HBO's "Rome" He was equally good as a badass and as a kind, gentle, loving husband and friend (although this may have been romanticized and not true to the actual person). The Irishman chronicles the rise and fall of infamous Cleveland gangster Danny Greene, who engaged in a power struggle with the Italian mob. Greene was an upstart union rep and later became a cocky, legendarily difficult-to-kill troublemaker in the world of organized crime in the 1970s. I really liked that the film had numerous actors who have played characters in the gangster genre. That includes Paul Sorvino (Paul Cicero in "Goodfellas") and Steve Schirripa (Bobby Baccalieri in "The Sopranos"). Now "Kill The Irishman" isn't an all time classic in the gangster genre, I don't want to overhype it...but it's better than you'll expect. Give this one a try. I will be picking up a copy on BD. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/w_uoDiEDEsY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

No.

Trailer looks interesting. It's also the first "gravely voice narrated" trailer I've seen in years. I thought those had fallen out of favor.

Cool to see thread about this here.
This is indeed a good film, which makes it pretty much 100% this will be the last post in the thread. |

yea I didn't expect many responses, but thought this film at least deserved a thread.

Re: Kill The Irishman -- Ray Stevenson -- 2011
I loved Stevenson in it, but the film is in a major rush to get through Danny's life. We barely have time to know anyone long enough to care about them, and major events feel glossed over like they're minor blips. The film would have been better had it been substantially longer; everything needed more room to breathe.
They did assemble a great cast, though. |
