The JAWS 2 appreciation thread
What are your thoughts of the underrated younger brother to Steven Spielberg's classic?
Now that JAWS is out on Blu-Ray, the sequel deserves a shout-out. It's got John Williams, Carl Gottlieb, Roy Sheider... ...Considering that shark didn't always work, Jeannot Swarc does a good job of directing the action set-pieces. What do you think? http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UFFeOKzNIs...600/Jaws-2.jpg |
Re: The JAWS 2 appreciation thread
i haven't watched it in about 4 years or so but i remember watching it and thinking it was easily the best sequel of the bunch.

Re: The JAWS 2 appreciation thread
Without a doubt the best sequel...but that isn't saying much.
People bitch and complain about kids ruining movies all the time, but the annoying teenagers destroyed this movie for me. The waterskiing scene was cool, as was the finale with the electrical cable and I kind of liked how nobody would believe Brody and he had to pretty much do everything on his own, but everything with the teenagers on the boats was bloody awful. It could have been pretty good actually, but alas, it isn't. |
Re: The JAWS 2 appreciation thread
I liked it. Always good to see 70's hippies getting eaten by a shark.
Oh, and the helicopter scene is the bomb, yo. |
Re: The JAWS 2 appreciation thread
For a sequel to what I consider one of the greatest films of all time, it's a damn fun ride.
Williams' score is a high point. I also liked how they scarred the shark, adding an extra creepy element to a face audiences were already familiar with by that point. They shouldn't have cut the helicopter pilot's death, though. |
Re: The JAWS 2 appreciation thread
I've always enjoys part 2, it's the only Jaws sequel I own on DVD. I give all the credit to Scheider, it wouldn't be half as good if he wasn't in it.
I liked how they primarily focused on the sounds that attract sharks in part 2. They used some wonderful underwater echo sounds that created a good sense of dread. I actually didn't have much of a problem with the teenagers with the exception of the girl who wouldn't stop crying and the little kid they brought along. Everyone else was fine. |

The only thing that bothered me about the helictopter pilot's death was the fact that he had an Abraham Lincoln goatee for no reason. That was distracting to the point where it was humorous. But the shot of the shark rising out of the water to clamp onto the helicopter pontoons from the cockpit p.o.v. was cool. That's a shot Spielberg would be proud of. |
Re: The JAWS 2 appreciation thread
Always liked this sequel as well. Watching it as a kid scared the hell out of me because if that shark is gonna be eating kids, that meant I could be next. And I still have yet to fully watch 3 and 4.

The fact that Alex Kitner was about 12 years old in the original JAWS meant that anyone was fair game to be shark meat. Dogs, fishermen....even little boys. |

It isn't underrated. It's a piece of shit. The entire first hour is a bunch of stupid kids on a yacht getting picked off one by one. When you actually want to see the characters in a film die, you know it isn't working. |
Re: The JAWS 2 appreciation thread
Uh, the kids don't go out on the water until the last hour.

oh that's right. The first hour is the kids hanging out and putting together the whole get-together. My point remains, none of them are worth giving a shit about. The whole ousting of Brody as police chief is handled poorly. The direction is practically nonexistent. The film sucks. |
Re: The JAWS 2 appreciation thread
I agree the ousting of Brody was lame. The guy saves the town from a huge shark, he clearly knows the signs, and yet they completely dismiss him like he's the town loon.

Re: The JAWS 2 appreciation thread
I tried to watch it for the first time the other night, and fell asleep.
I guess I have no appreciation :( |

I guess I have no appreciation :( That's a good point. I think if you watch a 1978 horror movie by 2012 standards, then JAWS 2 moves along very slowly. |
Re: The JAWS 2 appreciation thread
I've always enjoyed Jaws 2.
It doesn't compare to the original, but there was no way it would measure up. Taken by itself, it's a fun ride. |

Re: The JAWS 2 appreciation thread
Also, it has one of my favorite teaser posters, and tag lines, ever:

Re: The JAWS 2 appreciation thread
I've only seen about twenty minutes of this on TV, but I was immediately struck by how the shark attack I was watching seemed like a bunch of uninspired coverage shots edited together in an uninspired way. It did make me more fully appreciate the imagination and precision of the shot selection and editing of the original.
