I've never seen the film. Didn't really care to do so when it came out...I was 11 and the trailers weren't selling it well to me. Anyway...growing up and reading up on it from here and other places...It kind of got my interest. Also...it's from what I had heard...a very different Sly. A human man all the way...more so than Rocky in Rocky I and Balboa.

Got it on BD via Walmart.com (was like 7.88 or something). I finally saw it. Technically speaking on the BD...great visual and audio, haven't fallen into the commentary and what features are on the BD yet. The film? Fucking great. It is VERY much a western in a way, especially the latter 3rd of it. Sly's performance is soooooo different from, what I've seen of his work, EVERYTHING. He's a puppy dog essentially. He's got the engine to go but then he gets told no and no again. There's a man willing to fight in this sheriff but he hasn't popped out yet. Keitel, Patrick, etc did good work as well. I just really really really loved the film. Glad I finally got it on BD. I can see why A LOT of people would be turned off by this film back in the day. Just was too different of a Sly for people, how sad.

De Niro's role is kind of reserved in a way. Not unbelievable to see him do the role but...you almost expect more out of it but the character is tied to the realities of his job and can only go so far.

Solid film. I dunno if it's still on sale at WM but...I'd get it if you were guys.
Snake creating a thread on a Sly film? unheard of.

I liked It a lot when it first came our and still do. There was a rumor going around for a while before its release stating that Sly was doing the film for less money because he "Wanted to give back to the industry" later obviously everyone found out that he was only offered a certain amount of cash because the people involved didn't think he had the acting chops like the rest of the players did.

I thought Stallone did a great job in it as well and he earned his spot amongst the naturals do to speak.

The flick is more character driven than anything but it really does work well.

Glad you liked it. IMO it has one of Sly's best performances of his entire career.
But the one who really flexes his acting chops here is Ray Liotta, I thought his performance was the best.

After seeing this...I honestly wish he'd do more character stuff. I'd take that over action Sly...whom I do love very much but...I want to see Sly push his acting chops.

Great film and Stallone should have been nominated for it.

Totally disagree...Stallone was awful and ruined the film for me.

Saw this in the theater when it was released. Was okay, but was left a bit underwhelmed considering the talent involved.

well fuck me like 2 peso whore on the border. Either I missed it in the search or the (detailed) search was very specific w/ the spelling considering it's Cop Land and not...Copland.

for those of you that have seen the Theatrical Cut and the DC. Is it that much of a difference?

Love the extended cut.

Great film. Sly's best acting.

That scene at the shooting gallery gets me every time.

This was my reaction also.

I don't remember the specifics, but I never believed him in the role.

We don't have a thread for it because DVDTalk didn't exist in 1997.

Agreed.

He gave it his doe-eyed best, but it was such a self-conscious performance as to be laughable. He is just a bad actor, there's just no getting around that fact.

Is that really true? Seems hard to believe. Actors have price quotes and they usually stick to them unless it's simply a project that they really want to do but the movie can't afford it. And if that's the case, sometimes the A lister will just take points.

At that time, I have to assume Sly's quote was still awfully high. I have to believe he would have demanded either his quote or points or wouldn't have done it. Or he did it because they couldn't meet his quote but he just wanted to do it anyway either as something to pass the time or to actually prove that he was a good actor. I just don't buy that a bankable movie star like Sly would take less money just because the powers that be thought he was a shitty actor. I guess maybe his agent could have lied to him.

Or maybe it was one of those cases where Sly really wanted to do the movie, but the powers that be didn't want him, & sly asked for a pay cut and then the producers agreed

Re: Cop Land (Dir: James Mangold) 1997 Cop drama w/ Stallone

According to IMDB

The budget for the film was $10,000,000 and all the actors in the film worked for scale due to the film's budget.

John Travolta, Tom Hanks, and Tom Cruise where among the actors that were considered for the role of Sheriff Freddy Heflin.

Originally, Ray Liotta wanted the role of Sheriff Freddy Heflin, while Sylvester Stallone wanted the role of Gary "Figgsy" Figgis.

It's an extremely mediocre film that gets too much credit for some reason. People on this board think it's a masterpiece because it didn't outright suck like it should have.

I liked this film. But it played like a corrupt cop film. Sort of like Striking Distance. It gets hokey after you see so many. The genre doesn't have much juice in it.

Anyone notice that shot from The Last Stand trailer is just like the shot from the Copland trailer? They walk towards the camera with a shotgun, kind of heading towards the right.

Re: Cop Land (Dir: James Mangold) 1997 Cop drama w/ Stallone

At the time, Stallone had a ton of failures and I don't doubt the story that he was offered less and accepted after being in a string of bombs since '90.

Great movie though with the last outburst from DeNiro that wasn't cliche. "You blew it!!"

Harvey Kitel was my favorite performance in the movie. DeNiro made a nothing part good. Stallone did o.k. and was nice to see Sly and DeNiro together in a scene.

Re: Cop Land (Dir: James Mangold) 1997 Cop drama w/ Stallone

I just watched this on BD the other night for the first time in a while, reminded me of how good it is. I don't have any issue with the pacing at all; I like seeing these great actors really dig into their respective parts.

DeNiro has the best lines in the movie. This was, along with Jackie Brown, the last good film he's done.

Great score by Shore, too. Reminded me of his work on Silence of the Lambs.

Thought this was good at the time of release and remembered liking Stallone's performance in it. One of his best for me.

I can't believe this film got compared to Striking Distance. Wow. That one was awful. I kept rooting for the horse to die.
