All my opinion of course :

Besides the excellent filmmaking (acting, writing, directing, cinematography, etc...) I find its story fascinating. It's basically (similar to There Will Be Blood & Inherent Vice) about two men who seem to be complete opposites, but yet are very much alike. Each one is fascinated with the other but at the same time there is a power struggle in which one refuses to submit to the other's will. The film is filled with symbolism and layers that explore the basest nature of man, and how outside forces have an effect on that behavior.

This thing has been a massive box office failure and has made just $7 million.

Granted, it never did play on very many screens.

First off, let me say Paul Thomas Anderson has been my favorite director since the 90s.

I was disappointed by "The Master" & thought it was just ok, but could have been a lot better with all that material.

Rented "Inherent Vice" on PPV for 10 bucks last night & didn't care for it much at all. It wasn't that funny and then they ratchet up the suspenseful score music in the final 30 minutes trying to make it something else. I just didn't give much of a shit about ANY of the characters.

Not sure what I watched, but I wasn't all that entertained. Seems like they wasted a lot of talent in this one. (Brolin was good, though).

I guess I'll watch it again tonight to see if it's any better the second time. Although, I kind of doubt it.

I seriously hope PTA gets back on track with his next film.

I watched the movie a couple of weeks ago and i did not care for it at all. Just found it dull from start to finish.

I've been a huge PTA fan since Boogie Nights. I went out of my way to see The Master in 70mm. I got about 2/3 of the way through this and shut it off. I suppose I'll finish it or rewatch it one day but I got absolutely no enjoyment from what I saw.

Don't worry. Not much happens in the final third of the film anyway.

At least we get to see Katherine Waterston totally nude.

he was only character I found remotely interesting.

Martin Short's brief role was a scream.

but the scattershot editing of the storylines reeked of student-filmmaking credibility.

I'm aware this is based on a book but the Big Lebowski influence couldn't be more obvious. Nice try but this was a dud.

Funny stuff. I laughed so hard at this movie, but nothing beat Joaquin's reaction to the baby photo.

Classic. I think it's about time for a PTA marathon.

Josh Brolin should have been nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor.

I agree with pat a chore to sit through.

Took me two times to get through and had to FF a times.

while Waterston looked good she looked much better a few years ago in Babysitters.
Her face is different and she was a skosh too thin.

Watched it three times. Better the second time. Third time's the charm.

Not much happened? What did you want to happen?

This is a film that just plays better on repeat viewings and in retrospect. First time watching, you're just wondering what the fuck is going on. Almost too noiry for its own good.

The film is definitely true to the book. They both leave you with a WTF feeling, but you "get it" after multiple viewings.
