Does anybody else keep a list of movies they've seen?

I have an Excel File with about 10 tabs (one for each decade), each of which has a year, so whenever I see something I put it in there.

After seeing it like that it really surprised me how few 40's and 50's movies I have seen.

I kinda wish I did. But it's too much work to start now.

No, but I do keep a list of movies I have not seen and a reminder to watch or purchase later on. :)

Re: Does anybody else keep a list of movies they've seen?

Yeah, it took a while at first. I wrote them all down on a Word Doc as they came to mind, and kept it for a few years. Last year I finally organized it by year, which took a very long time, but it is worth it to have a catalog. There are always those few that you see as a kid but forget the names.

Riot, good stuff with those challenges and rankings.

not a list, but i do have every stub since 1985 (unfortunately some of the stubs are so old they don't show the movie on it anymore, most still do though)...

Re: Does anybody else keep a list of movies they've seen?

I only remember movies that have special memories, like my Dad took me to see Jurassic Park while my Mom was in the hospital soon to give birth to my sister.

I saw Jumanji with a girl in my class I liked so I consider that a first date.

I took my current girlfriend to Darjeeling Limited and it was out first movie.

My dad and i saw Tommy Boy together.

Other then that I've seen so many movies on Netflix, HBO, wherever that keeping track is hard.

Nice on those stubs scott, that's a long time! I keep mine as well in a binder, using those baseball card sleeves to hold them.

Thanks. I think Back to the Future was my first.

I've tried, but always ended up forgetting about it. That said, I'm still keeping tack of anything I've seen in 2012. Every other year, I didn't get past April, so there's that. :)

I write down every movie I see (theater and home) and save every ticket stub(the oldest one is Dumb and Dumber from Dec. '94). Over the years, I've tried to make a proper alphabetical list, but I never get more than a few pages. Chronologically on Excel sound like the way to go.

This thread has officially melted my nerd-o-meter.

Yet I collect silver age comic books.

I've been doing the forum "Track 'em as you see him" threads since 2010, and this year also started tracking films on letterboxd.com. Only films I haven't seen before. Almost at 100 new films this year, which seems light to me, but ive never

I keep all my movie stubs (and usually put them in the DVD case artwork if I own the DVD), but never really kept track of my non theatrical viewing. I watch a movie every day, so I don't know if I could catch up.

I have been keeping a list for the past 15 years...it is interesting to look back and see what I was watching at various times in my life.

Re: Does anybody else keep a list of movies they've seen?

I had one from 1980 till 2009.
I stopped cause the movies started to suck and was only going about 3 movies a year including renting.
My new movies have caught up with my new music purchase.
Music turned me off with rap and movies turned me off with remakes.
Bottom line the new generation from 1990 has no talent.

I started keeping a list in the Notes app on my iPhone around June of last year.

I used to remember every movie I saw in childhood (plus the order of every double and triple feature I saw and which theaters I saw them at) but when I decided to compile a list in the mid-to-late '90s, I found serious gaps in my memory and wish I'd started it sooner. I wound up going to the main branch of the New York Public Library to look up newspaper movie listings on microfilm to fill in the gaps and correct whatever I misremembered. But they're missing the microfilm for certain periods.

But I actually did start to keep such a list when in high school, starting in 1968 and kept it till 1974. Then sometime in the late 1980s I started again and have kept it going since then.

A couple of years ago, I rounded up all my lists, journals and diaries from over the decades and began compiling a master list in a word document of every film I've ever seen, by year, from whatever the earliest film I've seen (something like Melies' A TRIP TO THE MOON, 1902) to the newest, which is THE DARK KNIGHT RISES as of this writing.

There are still gaps in my memory. There's a constant refrain of "Did I ever see [fill in title]?" because I watched bits and pieces of movies over the years and am not sure if I ever saw certain movies in their entirety. Recently, for instance, I watched the World War II POW drama, THREE CAME HOME (1950), a powerful indictment of the way the Japanese treated civilians in their prison camps during the war, based on an account by a female author who lived through the horrible experiences depicted. (It's a far more wrenching film than Spielberg's EMPIRE OF THE SUN.) I had it on my list as having been seen, yet I didn't remember seeing any of these scenes before. And the film is filled with stuff I would have remembered if I'd seen it before, e.g. the attempted rape by a Japanese prison guard of the main character (played by Claudette Colbert).

And I have buried in a closet boxes of files from the 1980s of notes I took on movies I was seeing for a proposed book project (that never came to pass). I'm sure there are things in there I haven't come across on any of my other lists. When I retire, I'm going to start digging through all of this stuff.

Re: Does anybody else keep a list of movies they've seen?

Yep - I have a weird obsession with lists/record keeping of this kind of stuff.

Started last year when I began getting more into movies. For each year I keep two tabs in Excel:

(1) I keep track of all the new titles I've watched this year - including date, format (location if theatre), year released, and rating/grade

(2) Re-watched titles - including date, format, year released

It's really pretty easy to maintain/update.

Re: Does anybody else keep a list of movies they've seen?

No, but I keep a list of PS3 games that I own and haven't finished yet (It's well over 100 games). When I finish a game, it comes off the list. I use it to help decide which game to play next. It has columns to tell me whether or not the game has trophies, difficulty rating, time committment, whether I've already started it, and whether it's a hard copy or a digital download. Doesn't stop me from buying new ones when I find a good deal though, so I will likely never finish all of them. Clearly something is wrong with me.
