"Movies/Actors/Directors that don't get enough credit" Appreciation Thread
i was thinking about this with the passing of Tony Scott. Now, he, I don't think would be an example, but I think he does get overshadowed by his more substantial in directing brother Ridley.
My pick: Ray Stevenson
i thought about him after recording and watching Kill the Irishman for the second time. he is just so good and almost unrecognizable in the role. then, i thought what he brought to Punisher: War Zone. while not a great movie he definitely brought something that Thomas Jane sure didn't in the first. i just like him. i really like the guy as an actor.
so who or what are your picks for entertainment that is oft overlooked and don't get enough credit...

Before this gets flooded with rose-colored appreciation of Tony Scott...
I definitely agree with your pick. He was fantastic in Rome and was the only palatable thing about Kill the Irishman.
My pick though is Winona Ryder. I think she got tagged as a mid-90s pop tart and having recently watched Reality Bites for the first time, I can see that, but I don't think she is nearly as bad as people make her out to be.
She held her own in films like The Age of Innocence and quirkier stuff like Heathers, Beetlejuice, and Edward Scissorhands, but she has grown into an actress that can convey some serious pathos as seen in Black Swan and she was one of the few enjoyable things about the over indulgent indie The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.
It's a shame that shoplifting and a 90s perception has seemed to limited the roles she is offered. It would be nice to see her working in drama again with top directors. At the very least, let any serious roles being offered to Cameron Diaz go to her, lest we repeat Gangs of New York.

Yes please keep this a Tony Scott free zone....Scott Free if you will. Keep you misty eyed remembrances to his suicide thread.
Thanks,
The management.

Thomas Jane.
He's been around for quite a while, in the lead, and then not in the lead. Most recently he was publicly shit canned off of Bullet to the Head with Stallone - and was even in that piece of crap LOL (seriously?) - he can really hit it out of the ballpark when given the right material. The Mist is amazing and most recently the Punisher: Dirty Laundry film short got all the fanboys in a froth. He also has his show Hung on cable, too.
We need more TJ!

Evidently anyone who has played the Punisher...
So... Dolph gets a nod too. Now what if Tony Scott had directed Dolph as The Punisher? Ah... Wow, could have been something

Hung was a terrible terrible show. Tony Scott takes a beating on this board but wasn't bad, just didn't really stand out from the pack all that much.
I think Claire Dane's doppelganger Clea DuVall is under utilized, she's quite capable with the right material. Also, Claire Danes plays crazy extremely well.

Jane and Stevenson are very under appreciated.
Actually when I saw Scott Pilgrim, Jane's appearance got a nice crowd reaction. From me too. He's a very likable guy.
I'll got and say...Harry Dean Stanton. I made a thread about the man but goddamn it..he's in so many films and you take him for granted almost just cuz he seems like he's part of that world's background but that's his thing...he blends like a motherfucker.

Ellen Burstyn, great in everything, iconic in The Exorcist and Requiem for a Dream.

And somehow she lost the oscar to...Julia Roberts. REALLY?! REALLY?! You give me a performance in Roberts' career that can be as powerful as EB in Requiem. Nothing.

Read Manny Farber's essay on "Underground Films" (1957); he refers to many great directors who are considered master auteurs today but were officially unappreciated in their time: Howard Hawks, William Wellman, Raoul Walsh, Anthony Mann, Don Siegel, Sam Fuller, etc. Even John Ford was generally underappreciated in his time. Farber himself attacked Ford with a blistering negative review of THE SEARCHERS. Look at how few auteurist classics got any Oscar nominations.

Robert Ryan
I don't think he ever gave a bad performance....nice that he went out with one of his greatest performances in The Iceman Cometh. And for an actor who thrived playing villains...he was one of the nicest guys in Hollywood.

Nah. Michael Shannon is super hot right now.
Just a matter of time before we get him in some big tentpole movies. If he wants to do them.

Miguel Ferrer. I wish he had more leading roles like in The Night Flier and The Harvest, but he always steals the show regardless of his length of time on screen. Well, aside from RoboCop, which is a film full of scene-stealers.
Christopher McDonald. Much like Ferrer, he usually winds up playing the jerk roles, and he owns them each time. Also very memorable as the TV host in Requiem for a Dream.
Powers Boothe. Fantastic actor, especially when it comes to playing slimy villainous types. Was delighted to see him in Frailty when I saw that film at the theater.
Will Patton. Strong character actor always brings a charming presence to the screen. Especially terrific in The Mothman Prophecies, and does well with a small role in one of my favorite films, The Rapture.
