For a film with a production budget of $100 million, the film's terrible post production work makes it look like a direct-to-video production at times.

Re: The Expendables 2 (West, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
I loved it. I hadn't seen the first Expendables since I heard it wasn't that great, so I finally watched it on Netflix right before going tonight. Maybe it helped that I was seeing it in the coolest theater i've ever been too and drinking beers while watching in the theater (http://www.cinepolisusa.com/), but I really enjoyed it.
The first movie seemed to take itself too seriously, where as all the one liners and self awareness was just embraced in this one, and I loved that aspect of it. Cheesy sure, but if i'm watching all the action stars of that era I pretty much expect that sort of thing and watching the self aware gags of Chuck Norris and those ridiculous lines about him online, Arnold and Bruce's catch phrases, Dolph's real life degree, and everyone's general age... I'm sold. My only complaints would be not enough Jet Li, and not enough Van Damme. Van Damme looked the part of an awesome villain, but just didn't have enough to do and his fight with Stallone was a bit of a let down. I guess given his age I shouldn't expect him to be doing more kicks or the splits, but I wish that fight was a bit more brutal. |

Ease up? I think I'm the only one who's mentioned him so far. I know he's done other films, but this is the first time I've seen him, and I thought he was great. Bring him back in the next film. It'll work, we'll give him a scar.

Re: The Expendables 2 (West, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
OK I'm not putting up spoilers since this the review thread.
Yes I would have liked more Jet Li, but they at least explained it. When he is leaving they ask when are you coming back? And he says maybe never. Easily explained. Its a hard life, and maybe its not for him anymore. I think the film worked, and the self awareness didn't bother me any. Most of it got a good reaction from the audience. Chuck Norris intro got the biggest reaction. As far as no memorable scenes, I disagree: The entire opening Van Damme kicking the knife into Billy Chuck's Intro Statham's church fight Everyone blasting the last guy in the village The shootout in the airport (especially the X-Ray machine) I also appreciated the extra character development. Dolph is a genius, Crews likes to cook for only himself, etc. Bring on #3! |

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I rather have less fighting as long as it looks real. I don't want to see Van Damn doing his splits with wire-fu c.g.i.

Wow, hadn't heard of Cinepolis. We have the iPic Theaters here, which used to be called Gold Class Cinemas that were owned by Village Roadshow.

Re: The Expendables 2 (West, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
Saw it. Liked it overall, but the novelty of the first one has kind of worn off IMO. This one started and ended strong, but the middle was pretty weak. A bit heavy on the self-parody elements as well. However, the finale was an old-school action fan's wet dream!

THE AVENGERS, T2 are the only movies since 1990 that gave me more than my money's worth.
Van Dam should get an Oscar nod. The only thing missing from this movie is a hot, sexy babe. For those wusses who cried at DKR you'll be crying with laughter at the one-liners. Time for all you DKR lovers to man up and go see this movie. |

Yup, I went to the Laguna Niguel one. Tickets were $20, plus maybe another $30 for food and liquor. On the expensive side, but super comfy reclining chairs. Plus, if the movie you're watching isn't that great, you can just order more alcohol to make up for it :p

I may throw in my UK copy of JCVD just for fun. That was my #2 flick of 2008 behind TDK.

Re: The Expendables 2 (West, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
You know who they need to get for EX3 as a director? John Hyams. The guy who directed UniSol: Regeneration. That had a shit ton of action where you felt the hits and blows. I think that's why I'm mostly disappointed w/ EX2. It's better staged and filmed but the action still doesn't have an impact aside from that intro. To make it worse UniSol: Regeneration was a Direct to DVD/BD..and it was better than EX1. Had some of the best US action of this new century.
Aside from a slightly meh trailer for UniSol: Day of Reckoning (again by Hyams and filmed in 3D, which'll be interesting)...the action there still had an "oomph factor" that I like to call. They make you wince, etc. We need more of that. You feel the hits. I also hope the movie is better or at least on par w/ Regen. Sly get Hyams. |

Give him a real budget to work with. |

Re: The Expendables 2 (West, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
Sylvester Stallone is back with most of the crew from the first Expendables film, along with some added 80s action film icons, for the next installment.
My 2-word review: Hilariously violent. If you remember the violence level from the last "Rambo" film, then you have an idea how high the body count is with this film, as well as the bloodiness (stretching its R rating for all its worth in the violence department), but it's done to the same level of the "ED-209 gone amok" scene from Robocop, it's simply played for laughs, and hilariously so. Along with all the geriatric action stars on the screen (Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwartzenegger, Jean-Claude van Damme, and some other cameos), come the one-liners during a hail of bullets or action scenes, playing up the charm of the old-time action flicks of yesteryear. But the film would not be as fun if you didn't enjoy the Expendables crew, and there are interpersonal scenes that also bring some laughs, and vulnerabilities under their exteriors of being cold-blooded mercenaries. For its action film genre, and delivering on the all-out violence (explosions, guns, hand-to-hand combat, etc.), it's a solid couple of hours of action pr0n. I give it 3 stars, or a grade of B. |
Re: The Expendables 2 (West, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
'The Expendables 2' topped the weekend box office with $28.7 million, with 'Bourne Legacy up next with $17 million, and ParaNorman close behind with $14 million
According toe IMDB. |

I wish it could have done better, but overseas BO will make it a hit.

Re: The Expendables 2 (West, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
This one does have the potential to stick around, as there are no other summer blockbusters really left at this point.
