The Campaign (2012, Ferrell, Galifianakis, d: Jay Roach)

I thought there was a thread for this, but couldn't find it. Movie comes out tomorrow so I figured I'd make a thread. Since there's obviously little interest in it, I'll keep the poll simple and do it RT style - Fresh/Rotten/Fuck These Guys.

Starring: Zach Galifianaki, Will Ferrell, Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott, John Lithgow, Dan Aykroyd, Brian Cox
Director: Jay Roach
Runtime: 85 minutes
Rated: R

Currently sitting at 76% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with 34 reviews.

Ebert's 3-star review is quoted as: "The Campaign" made me think of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" if it had been written by the Onion staff.

Another review simply states: They could've called it Ron Burgundy Runs For Congress.

Initially I thought this looked pretty terrible, but I dunno, could be entertaining.

The trailers made it look like to be absolute garbage ...

... but then I read this.

Not surprising, since Will Ferrell essentially plays the same character in every movie.

Might be the first good comedy this summer.

I would see this if someone paid me $100 cash.

It looks a shitload better than The Watch. Not that it would take much to accomplish that.

Re: The Campaign (2012, Ferrell, Galifianakis, d: Jay Roach)

I saw it on Monday, it was ok. The movie seemed really short, and oddly enough dragged in the beginning and end, the middle portion had the most laughs/jokes. I liked how they paid off a couple initially dumb jokes too. Ferrell basically does his George W impression, mixed in with some Clinton and Galifianakis does a variation of Seth Galifianakis.

**1/2 out of ****, would be a good rental, don't go pay 10 bucks for it.

I like the fact that in addition to two great comedic talents, Jay Roach is the director. He seems to have a talent for both screwy comedies (Austin Powers) and Political Dramas (Recount, Game Changer). This seems to combine both.

That's one fucking astute observation there, Dr.

Could work? According the the poll, you've already seen it.

Saw it. Funny, but would have worked better as a political movie with a exaggerated humor as opposed a slapstick comedy with a political backdrop. Ferrell and Zach G. pretty much gave this movie its strength, but the former's schtick is getting old. Seems like all of his characters are starting to be variations on Ricky Bobby .

Ferrell is the white version of Samuel L. Jackson. They play the same character over and over and all they fucking do is yell.

I worked on this movie for two days and it was so much fun! Jay Roach and Will Ferrell were both very sweet in-person. I saw the movie yesterday and was disappointed with how much footage was cut out.

Doesn't surprise me. They cut enough out of Anchorman to make another movie.

Re: The Campaign (2012, Ferrell, Galifianakis, d: Jay Roach)

Marketed as a comedy of a campaign battle for a US Congressman's seat from the state of North Carolina, it's more of a satire on the state of current day affairs of how big money puts in puppets to do their legislative bidding in the Congress.

4-term incumbent Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) looks to be in the clear for an uncontested 5th term (in spite of his womanizing and other personal excesses), but with a change in big money support, he faces a challenge in the form of Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), simply a cuckold who somehow finds some fortitude, and pushes back at Brady's politically offensive tactics. The film is rated R for plenty of raunchy language and situations, I laughed at many of of political faux pas each candidate commit in the film, as their campaigns have an ebb and flow of doing well or poorly in the polls. Is it a great comedy, no, not really, but it wasn't a dreary affair, and does reflect somewhat the election politics landscape of today.

I give it 2.75 stars, or a grade of B-.

Ugh, just got back from it, had a few laughs but overall not good.

Re: The Campaign (2012, Ferrell, Galifianakis, d: Jay Roach)

Went and saw this last night. I was kind of disappointed in it I guess I was expecting it to be funnier from what some people had told me. It had some funny moments but overall felt pretty inconsistent to me. The funniest bits were the smaller parts featuring actors like Jack McBrayer, John Goodman, Dan Aykroyd, and John Lithgow. Ferrell as much as I like some of his work I wish would try new things more often instead of going back to the same routine. Galifianakis is decent sometimes too but he didn't do much for me in this. It also didn't help that the entire movie there was a group of three guys behind my friend and I who were talking throughout and making dumb comments/singing along to songs that came on.

Re: The Campaign (2012, Ferrell, Galifianakis, d: Jay Roach)

The ending sucked. Cam Brady should've been mean at the end like he was throughout the whole movie not sentimental and nostalgic over a slide.

Caught this today and I can't say I was underwhelmed (since I didn't expect much to begin with), but this wasn't very good. I liked the cast, but the whole movie was pretty sparse on laughs.
