The funny thing about Alf is Jerry Stahl one of the writers of Alf admits he wrote several episodes while on drugs.

Hide your cats, people, it looks like ALF may be making a comeback. "Remember Alf? Well he's back. In movie form!" - Identify that (modified) quote and attempt to wrap your mind around the thought of an ALF movie, because it sounds like Sony Pictures Animation is looking to make one happen.

THR posted the news, stating that Sony Pictures Animation has acquired the rights to ALF, the sci-fi sitcom from the 80's, which followed the (other '80's) Tanner family and the Alien Life Form (ALF) that crash landed on their property, and went on to take up residence in their home. Sony is aiming to develop the property into a hybrid CG/live action feature. Series creator Paul Fusco and producer Tom Patchett are said to be on board to produce the project, along with Jordan Kerner (The Smurfs).

It's probably fair to say that ALF contributed at least somewhat to my budding sense of sarcasm during my formative years. So, naturally, I feel a sense of nostalgic fondness for the puppet-aiien. Whether or not a movie can update the concept and the character properly remains to be seen, but having just seen Ted, I can't help but see the potential in an ALF movie. Though I expect this one to be a bit more family friendly, if the film is modeled after the sitcom. And as THR says Fusco is expected to return to provide the voice for the title character, I'm choosing to feel optimistic about this concept for now.

I don't why they'll CGI him it'll cost more money and if I remember correctly Alf in the puppet form was in a commercial about four or five years ago with Ed McMahon.

People have written episodes of TV shows while on drugs? Who knew.

In regards to this ALF news, it must be canon and not mess with the original continuity. Otherwise it'll just be a joke and won't be taken seriously.

The TV series ended with Alf caught by the government, which was a surprisingly grim ending for what was essentially a kid's show.

So do you want the movie to deal with them giving Alf an anal probe?

Oh man I never knew that. I was about 10 years old when the TV finale aired, and it gave me nightmares. :lol:

This thread made me go back and watch some Alf clips on youtube, my favorites were when he blew up the kitchen and had a hangover. If a movie happened I think ALF should still be a puppet, but if its CGI and done similar to Ted it might work.

I would hope that the (mild) success of The Muppets would help keep this from being CGI. At least keep the close-ups a puppet and limit the CGI to distant shots where he's walking or doing some kind of stunt. Or just use a guy in a suit like the show.

if they are going to go full CGI because of the success of Ted, they might as well go full on R rating as well.

After watching Permanent Midnight a few times, I couldn't watch Alf without thinking about it.

Why CGI? Why not do what they did w/ The Muppets? Get damn fine puppeteers doing their thing...paint out the little details and voila....it works perfectly

This show was the credible comedy writer's hacky punchline in the 80's. Seinfeld writers bashed on it in interviews. They made fun of it on Sledge Hammer and The Simpsons. Yet it was still massively popular, mostly by appealing to the lowest common denominator.

It's reputation back then was comparable to how comedy writers treat Family Guy these days.

On a three camera sitcom it's much easier to have him move slow as hell and not show much of the puppeteer, so he was probably designed with those restrictions in mind (Granted this may be the case for many of the Muppets, but I am going to assume that the Henson crew is more talented than these guys). Hell even in the finale when you see his full body shot, he's just standing there as the agents come in. You'd think as a character he'd try to get the hell out or jump up and down to get his friends to come back.

In this supposed movie he's probably going to be doing some crappy action scenes or at least running, and they probably don't have the budget or creative solutions to do what the Muppet team can do practically, such as with Kermit riding a bike, or playing a Banjo.

Also Ted. I've never watched the show really, but judging from his movements in the bits that I do watch, that is my low level analysis. :D
