It's yet another Best-Of list. It only has as much meaning as you let it have.

As far as a film that "came out of nowhere to be the greatest movie of all time"... either the vast majority of critics and/or directors magically discovered it in the last 10 years, or a wholly other agenda is at play. Don't know, don't care. It's yet another Best-Of list.

Here's an interesting essay written by one of the voters.
It was written before the list result was public, but he predicts that Jeanne Dielman will move up as part of a new counter canon.

That's a very good article, with lots of amusing details and anecdotes.

It only took 22 people to crown Citizen Kane the best film of all time in 1962, and none of them needed to have thought it was the best film.

Hopefully with this new number one in ten years when they do the new list Andy Warhol's Sleep takes its true place at number one. 320+ minutes of a man sleeping. Hopefully Criterion puts it out on a 16K UHD.
