The 3rd Hobbit movie was originally going to be released in July 2014, but they are pushing it back to December 2014 for no other reason than to have consistency with the release dates of the other films. Dicks.

They probably didn't want to go head-to-head with all of the summer flicks. Hopefully this doesn't mean there was some sort of production problem.

If they're filming even more footage, that will certainly need FX work, so it's understandable.

Word has it that Jackson is thinking on breaking the third film into 2 films. So one in December 20015 and the final installment due Christmas 2016.

4th Hobbit has to be in space or I don't care.

Not long enough for whatever nonsense he has planned.

Honestly, I'm fine with the delay. Whenever I think about sequels coming out six months later, I think of The Matrix Revolutions, bleh...

What's curious is that the final installment will be released many years before the next-to-last film in the series. I guess that's Jackson's way of handling Bilbo being told about the Battle of the Five Armies.

I heard he was doing The Hobbit as 3 films then doing a formal bridge film between The Hobbit and the first LotR before doing the "Bilbo as a kid" flick and the sequel trilogy to LOTR.

The sequel trilogy will deal with

Spoiler:
How the crew of the Battlestar Galactica are adjusting to their new lives on Earth (well, Middle Earth anyhow) and how they lose their technology for 150,000 years.

Does that mean it is going to adopt a Memento-style narrative?

Word has it that Jackson is thinking on breaking the third film into 2 films.
 Oh but of course he is. The Hobbit could have been told in grand fashion in the first film, with no need for any further films.

re: The Hobbit: There and Back Again (2014)

They shouldn't do the year long delay between the second and third, mainly because these movies aren't being lauded as award contenders the way LOTR was in its time. They just need to get it over.
