That would make for an out-of-the-blue love triangle (well, square if you count Legolas), given that
Spoiler:
Tauriel is being romanced by Kili. ;)

Fili is the blonde.

Hopefully, Fili and Kili die defending Thorin. And the trailer sets up an argument between Kili and Thorin so I expect them to reconcile the moment Thorin is mortally wounded and Kili (along with Fili) lays down his life to defend his uncle.

I am also certain that
Spoiler:
Thorin will die fighting Azog. I am sure he will kill him as well, but sustain a fatal wound. I've kind of had that figured since he failed to take him out in Unexpected Journey.

Ugh. This reminds me: I still haven't watched the second film!

LOTR was the best thing ever when it came out. I can't believe I have so little interest in these movies. Maybe I have to force myself to watch them a few times or something. Like a good album.

She has her back to the camera but you can see she has her bow drawn for some reason. Thranduil swings at her and some blood spatters on his face.
It's a blink-and-you-miss-it moment.

And I agree with what you mention, given that's how I assumed that story arc would end.

Spoiler:
I don't see any blood. It looks to me like he's just drawing his sword.

I see it now. He seems to be slashing at an arrow though. Not sure what is going on in that clip.

She also fights Azog (at least in that clip she does), so who knows if she's the one that kills him? Maybe she does and overshadows Thranduil, so he can't let that happen, and kills her?

I loved the original trilogy too. I bought the Extended Editions twice(!), once on DVD and again on Blu-ray. These Hobbit movies are just painfully bloated though. I fell asleep each time watching the first two Hobbit movies in the theatre. P.J. will not fool me again! I'll wait until it's on TV.

Naw, both entries in this series are long albums with a few good tracks.

Or...
Spoiler:
Legolas defends Tauriel from Azog and he apparently "dies" (much like how Aragorn "died" in The Two Towers when he fell from that cliff) and a grief-stricken Thranduil takes his anger out on Tauriel. She is the reason that Legolas ventured out of Mirkwood, after all.

The scene in the trailer at 1:06 - you can see what looks to be either the 9 surrounding Gaaldriel and Gandalf or it's her personal bodyguard regiment. In the appendices
Spoiler:
she rescues Gandalf and destroys Dol Guldur.

That should be fucking amazing to see.

EDIT - just noticed in that scene where Galadriel is holding Gandalf, you can see Saruman run in the background and then it cuts to Elrond. When Saruman says "leave Saruman to me" you can see Elrond comforting Galadriel who looks injured and is on the floor in the background.

I think he says "leave Sauron to me..." ;)

Watched the EE of Desolation of Smaug last night. I will say that I liked it more than the theatrical cut. It did a much better job of introducing Beorn . I still think the subplots involving the love triangle and the politics of Laketown were superfluous. One thing I am kind of torn on is
Spoiler:
the revelation by Thrain that Smaug and Sauron were working together.
It works quite well in terms of making Hobbit fit into the whole LOTR saga, but doesn't add much to the individual story. Then again, it's pretty obvious PJ intends for this to be a LOTR PT, so in that regard I think it's working.

I like it for the very fact that it's in-keeping with a re-write of The Hobbit that J.R.R. Tolkien himself attempted. He only sold The Hobbit to his publisher to get money whilst he worked on The Silmarillion. Afterwards, they wanted a sequel to The Hobbit and he presented them with The Lord of the Rings. However, Tolkien was never satisfied with the published version of The Hobbit (which was originally just a bedtime story he made up for his children) and began an extensive rewrite that would better align it with The Lord of the Rings (and, in turn, with The Silmarillion). He presented one of his changes to the publisher (the altered version of the Riddles in the Dark chapter) to gauge their interest. They, without consulting Tolkien, re-issued The Hobbit with the new pages. Tolkien, in turn, went on to re-write The Hobbit but friends and relatives convinced him to stop because they felt he was turning it into a completely different book.

So, the "bloat" most people complain about (not counting the ramped up action sequences) is basically these movies (whether simply by pure chance) staying true to the rewrite that Tolkien himself once attempted.

I remember when I was actually excited by Peter Jackson movies. He's starting to go down as a George Lucas-level of waste of talent for me.

Peter Jackson has done pretty much the exact same thing with his prequel trilogy that George Lucas did with his. He took the heart from the first films and replaced it with video game cut scene effects sequences, added annoying new characters, and took something timeless and turned it into a cash-in.

Agreed. Really great track.

EDIT: The track is from Twelve Titans Music. It is called Dust and Light.

While I find fault with these movies, they are nowhere near the level of crap of the PT.

Correct. Hell, I don't find fault in them in any case. Its Tolkien. They'll never EVER be able to film his material in 90 minutes like the stupid hipsters want.

I know, what do those white millennials living in urban areas expect? a 90 minute retelling of a 304 page book.

Pfft, those redneck hillbilly beatniks best not be messing with my ability to watch a 3 hour version with every scene... and I mean EVERY scene, including that ever so important shot of Bilbo buying that one fish in that market.

Don't you dare cut that shit out, it may be important down the line.

caught the trailer for this before Interstellar. Based on that trailer I'd say this third installment has a lot of promise and I don't see a way it doesn't become the best of the 3. I wonder how all 3 extended versions will play out as one viewing experience. It's still a total mindfuck that they are managing to turn The Hobbit into close to a fucking 10 hour movie.

i don't want it in 90 minutes, but these movies go off the rails once they deviate from the books. Bird-shit-head man, Legolas, Mrs. Legolas, the Slab Hardcheese Orc, all crap and unnecessary.
