Re: The Equalizer (2014, Fuqua) S: Washington, Moretz, Leo, Pullman
Wife and I saw it last night, loved DW, he is one of my all time favorite actors.
Little to graphic for our taste, but I always loved the "Man who seeks justice" movies with a good actor in it. I use to watch the TV show every week. ***I would love a sequel with more of his background. |
Re: The Equalizer (2014, Fuqua) S: Washington, Moretz, Leo, Pullman
Caught a matinee today and I really enjoyed it, despite a few minor nit picks.
Denzel was great as being a badass MF. Some really awesome kills by him. I agree with a few comments that I could have used a little more background on McCall and his past. Also, how the hell can McCall go back to work at the fake Home Depot and stay in the same neighborhood after all that shit that went down? Ralphy and several of his colleagues knew he was there when he took out all those Russian goons. Who did Ralphy say to the cops or Feds took out those goons? His fat ass? Minor plot hole there. It was a little long. I think a better end point would have been the Moscow sequence where McCall took out Pushkin and his men and walked away. The scene extension with Alina and then the computer ad was probably there to help tease a potential sequel. |
Re: The Equalizer (2014, Fuqua) S: Washington, Moretz, Leo, Pullman
saw this Friday. I liked it. Was a bit iffy on the wrap up of it all but I liked it. There were a lot of old people in my theater for this. Was the show that popular to still be remembered or is Denzel Washington a hit for the elderly?

Re: The Equalizer (2014, Fuqua) S: Washington, Moretz, Leo, Pullman
This movie had some good moments, but the pacing was horrible. They could have easily cut 20 minutes from the first hour. If the extra time was used well I wouldn't mind, but entire sequences felt like a waste of time.

Re: The Equalizer (2014, Fuqua) S: Washington, Moretz, Leo, Pullman
I'll agree that this was a little long in the tooth, but you know what, I liked it. A lot. To me, this felt like a modern day Bronson flick, right down to Denzel being an unstoppable force of badassery. Fuqua's visual style was strong, although some of the slow-mo/surverying scenes got to be a bit much. Great score, even if it took the film over the top. I've always dug revenge films of this ilk, with a white knight just decimating thugs left and right.
I say bring on a sequel. Oh, and Chloe in that first scene... -other- |
Re: The Equalizer (2014, Fuqua) S: Washington, Moretz, Leo, Pullman
I thought it was great. I also enjoyed the fact that this movie didn't feel compelled to go badass right from the get go. I enjoyed the quiet moments the first hour of him in his routine. You know the bloodshed was coming, so that they showed him in these quieter moments, along with him and showing the interaction with the girl, helped justify the violence when that began.
I'm definitely hoping we'll get a sequel. I'd be nice to have Denzel have his own franchise. |
Re: The Equalizer (2014, Fuqua) S: Washington, Moretz, Leo, Pullman
I didn't mind the quiet moments or the diner scenes, but 90% of the stuff with the fat friend should have been on the editing room floor. The restaurant extortion and Home Depot robbery sequences could have been used to show him being drawn into his past life of violence in order to do good, but they don't work after we've already seen him kill the russians and know the russians are hunting him. It's like they were shown out of order.
I saw this as a good dumb action movie, like Taken, that was spoiled by trying to be too much of a character movie. Then I read reviews where people had the opposite take and saw it as a good character movie spoiled by too many dumb action sequences. I still disagree, but I can't say they are wrong. |
Re: The Equalizer (2014, Fuqua) S: Washington, Moretz, Leo, Pullman
I didn't mind the stuff with Ralphie or whatever his name was.
My main complaint is that the final extended action sequence was just entirely too long -- cool at first, then it just didn't want to end. I started to nod off before all was said and done. |
Re: The Equalizer (2014, Fuqua) S: Washington, Moretz, Leo, Pullman
It had it's moments but it was a bit long. It also looks like Denzel is keeping up with his JKD training. His skills show in the first fight choreography. The very last scene before the credits is the only thing that reminded me of the TV series.

Did this just hit the torrents or something? Haha. Whens the blu release? I wanted to see this.

Re: The Equalizer (2014, Fuqua) S: Washington, Moretz, Leo, Pullman
Probably, it's awfully close to retail time for it. I went with family over Thanksgiving and saw it and forgot all about it until seeing this thread pop up, may have been one of the reasons I nodded off. The one thing I love about my hometown: old second run bar theaters.
It comes out tomorrow on the streaming services (Amazon Instant, iTunes and Vudu), and December 30th on Blu-ray. |
Re: The Equalizer (2014, Fuqua) S: Washington, Moretz, Leo, Pullman
I wanted this to be better than it actually was. It was entertaining, but a couple of things bothered me. Some of this was just so preposterous it took me out of the movie.

Re: The Equalizer (2014, Fuqua) S: Washington, Moretz, Leo, Pullman
Just got done watching it (on Blu-ray) and for the most part did enjoy it, but as with others, the first 20-minutes were incredibly slow and there were portions in the second act with pacing issues. However, thanks to Denzel Washington and some well choreographed fight scenes, I was able to overlook those flaws.
I just hope when a sequel happens, they get a new director, though one wonders if Washington would appear in one without Fuqua. ***½/*****, (B, 6.8/10, 2.75/4) |
Re: The Equalizer (2014, Fuqua) S: Washington, Moretz, Leo, Pullman
I saw it. Liked it quite a bit. I didn't mind the pacing. The nail gun execution was hilariously bad, though. Denzel is one of those actors that I think I like him in pretty much everything I've seen him in.

We watched it tonight as well. A little graphic and brutal at times, but a pretty good movie.

The gardening shears through the neck was fucked up! I enjoyed the film.

Pretty solid movie, I liked the buildup and taking time just to see him doing his daily routine - of course it being Denzel makes it a lot easier (I could probably watch a whole movie about that) He's still got that screen presence, can't believe he's 60! |

I thought the movie was good because of the slow introduction to the characters. Gave the film some depth.

Re: The Equalizer (2014, Fuqua) S: Washington, Moretz, Leo, Pullman
Saw this last night on Blu and really liked it overall. I'll agree with what many have said, a little too much slo-mo and over stylized. In the Home Mart, you kill a guy, you take his gun, even if you don't use it, don't leave it for his buddies to be better armed. The nail gun was rough. Not enough velocity to kill or even hit accurately from a distance. At the end just shoot the guy, everyone else is dead anyway.
Never saw the original show. |
Re: The Equalizer (2014, Fuqua) S: Washington, Moretz, Leo, Pullman
Picked this up on DVD and really enjoyed it. It's not a perfect movie, but it was a lot of fun and I was never really bored.

I just watched this movie for the first time. Afterward, I was genuinely surprised to find out that that one guy was not Kevin Spacey.
