Re: The Dark Knight Rises (Nolan, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
Well, I know I will bring down fanboy wrath, but I'll go so far as to say that Nolan's and Burton's takes on Batman are just different, not better or worse. It is really impossible to compare the two, since they take place in completely different universes. You may prefer one universe or the other, but that doesn't make either one better or worse.
I agree, though, that Keaton's Wayne was better for me, and I personally sensed more menace in his version of the Batman "growl" than in Bale's.

I got more James Mason than Connery from Bane, but either way, I fucking LOVED his voice. It made him even more threatening, IMO.

I always assumed that is exactly what Teller from Penn and Teller sounds like, so the voice really distracted me.

I risk fanboy wrath by saying this, but I've always thought Michael Keaton was the best on-screen Bruce Wayne we've seen. Granted, Nolan's movies are superior, but I never thought Bale's Wayne was riding on the edge of sane/crazy the way Keaton's Wayne was. And I still think Bale's Batman voice is just a louder version of Keaton's.

The whole idea of Bane's voice betraying his look and demeanor is obviously intentional, but people like to complain.
Also, if Bane is now regarded as nothing more than Talia's henchman, then DARTH VADER, who Bane is very clearly modeled after, size, strength, voice and all, is nothing more than Tarkin / The Emperor's henchman in the original Star Wars Trilogy.

Saw this again today and I still don't understand where Blake goes at the end of the film. He gets a bag and coordinates and enters the cave, but isn't the cave under Wayne Manor? Why would he need GPS to get there, he's been there numerous times. Is this a secondary, new cave in the jungle somewhere? The landscape seemed very different.

I didn't think the cave was physically underneath it. The elevator led down to the caves, then you had to walk to get to it.

Finding out Talia was the mastermind at the end was a neat trick but at the expense of fleshing out her character. From the explanations here it's more apparent that Bane and Talia are probably more like partners. Plus, they only have one scene together and it ends with her giving him orders.
He defies the order when she leaves, but that implies that he can't/won't do what he wants in front of her. If they're more like partners then it would have been better for him to reply, "No, we kill him now. He'll just have to imagine the heat."

<knock-knock> [door opens] Good morning sir! We represent the League of Shadows and we are trying to spread the good word of Ra's Al Ghul. Would you have a few spare moments? No? OK, would you mind if we leave you some literature to read at your convenience?
