Love that new trailer. High hopes here.

Only thing that sticks out is that the leads seem like teens. Is that part of the story? I'm accustomed seeing 30-something characters in roles like that.

Maybe just my old man disease setting in. I think they both look like teens.

I'm not the only one who sees this, right?

Like how a lot of 20-somethings were playing high school kids in lots of the older school-based movies. And you could just tell they weren't high school aged.

No you aren't wrong. It wasn't that long ago he was playing for high school in Spider-Man and Chronicle to name a couple.

I don't have the books with me atm, but I always got the impression the two characters were youngish- mid to late 20's.

I don't have any issues with how they look compared to their comic book counterparts. Visually I think both are a good fit- I just hope there's more below the surface.

I just saw the trailer and came to post my thoughts and yeah I too thought they were teens. They look awfully young. Which is great I guess.

Trailer is dope.

This strikes me as AVATAR meets something or other.

I'd prefer this if it were animated...by the Japanese.

Those lizard/alligator-type creatures were really annoying.

Shocking!

Never heard of the comic, trailer doesn't do much for me. Creatures look cool but that's about it.

The source material is French. Not everything needs to be Japanese.

This feels absolutely cheeseariffic. I enjoyed The Fifth Element and when I first heard about this I was interested but that trailer looked so bland and hacky.

Yet another Chosen One white guy and his blond girlfriend are going to save the universe.

Will definitely see this in theaters, and seems to have a bit more of a fun element to it than Jupiter Ascending. Only issue is that while the source material may have been what inspired the stuff in the Star Wars prequels and 5th Element, it only counts in cinema where mainstream saw it first. Hence John Carter . Of course JC had the disadvantage of being a crappy movie.

It does have a little bit of an Avatar look to it.

I so hope this is good, but the more I see the more I am inclined to think this will be another Jupiter Ascending. Way I figure it, if they stick to the original release date of July 21 and have faith in it going against Dunkirk, it must be pretty good. If we get a Jupiter Ascending maneuver where they move to February , then it's probably a stinker.

There will be a Sneak Peak of this film before the Fathom Events 20th Anniversary/4K Screenings of The Fifth Element today and on 5/17.

I'm attending this in a few hours, so I'll chime in with what was shown.

Also here is a nice little write-up comparing what has been seen in the trailers versus the source material:

I have to think this will make more than $14.7M in its OW... Right?

It opens a week after War of the Planet of the Apes and two weeks after Spidey. So, it's possible.

I think at this point, the studio is pinning its hopes on the international market than domestic (and to be fair, seems like that's the case for many big budget films nowadays, particularly releasing in China -- just see xXx: Return of Xander Cage and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, IIRC, both movies made over $150M there).

King Arthur? xXx 3? Resident Evil? These are all terrible comparisons! I'm revved up to see this in theaters. Will be there opening weekend.

Just saying the business is much more about China than domestic box office... Also, so you're saying you're seeing it today because this is opening weekend.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage - $44.9M DOM, $301.25M OS ($164M from China)
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter - $26.83M DOM, $285.41M OS ($159.55M from China)

The Sneak Peak of Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets before the 20th Anniversary Screening of The Fifth Element, was just a short Featurette.

It had Luc Besson speaking about developing the script and prepping for years, while showing Behind-The-Scenes footage from the film.

I was hoping it would be a few minutes from the film

That's a bummer.

I was hoping to take my oldest to see 5th Element on the big screen, but Mother's Day? Then again on Wed, a school night. On top of that, the only price is almost $14 a ticket? This ain't the unaltered Star Wars we're talking about. It's not in 3D. Nada. Nearly $30 for two tickets for a movie I have sitting on my shelf 5 feet away. No thanks. I wonder how empty this was across the country.

I'm not sure why but Fathom Events tends to run that (single) Weekend/Weekday schedule a bunch. I've missed out on a lot of their events, not being physically able to make it to various cities during Rush Hour.

The Screening that I went to today was about half full. A few large families, which was a bit surprising.

THE FIFTH ELEMENT aired on Starz a lot last week. I saw it there. If they're going to run this in theaters why don't they block TV airings for a certain length of time before the screening? If I'd even considered going to the theater for it, I would have dropped the plan after seeing the movie on cable, which was the first time I'd seen it in 20 years. It does not hold up well.
