Re: Actors' experiences w/ a director's method of work
I've heard tell that Michael Bay has done his share screaming at actors and throwing things at them, and has had some accusations of mysogny thrown his way. Apparently he rarely does more than one or two takes of the acting, and is concerned only with the action scenes. Kermode says an actor who worked wih Michael Bay opines that he once asked what to do and Bay said "DO IT LIKE YOU DID IT BEFORE!" Before going back to what he was working on. Lebouf tells tales of having megaphones thrown at him and says Bay has no patience for people unwilling to be flexible with his sudden changes of kind about how he does things and his technique, sometimes literally moving cameras as soon as the actors step away before the shot is finished to get read for the next setup.

The more I read about these kinds of incidents, the more convinced I am that every time an actor throws a tantrum on-set, they probably have a very good reason for being upset.

I've seen video of this speech and I wondered if Bale was being sincere or passive aggressively telling Speilberg in front of all his peers and family that he was a real bastard. I'd think so, but after hearing Bale's rant tapes, it is hard to believe he is capable of expressing aggression "passively".

I never heard the slapping story, but I remember Bale telling a story once about his experience on Empire of the Sun when he called cut or chose to end his scene and Spielberg went ballistic on him. So, the slapping thing maybe was part of that...Spielberg punishing his insolence or some crap. Guess his sets aren't as saccharine as his films.
