Theatrical Cut or Extended Cut: Your Preferences

NOTE: I tried a search on this topic and couldn't find any. If one did exist , it must have been over a year ago as that is the limitation/filter I used.

It seems that since DVD went into widespread use, just about every major release gets several versions released in addition to the theatrical cut (I am hesitant to use the phrase "director's cut", as that might indicate it's the preferred version of the filmmaker, which I don't think is always the case) I was wondering which versions of movies that have alternate cuts we seem to prefer, and which ones we think what was in theaters is just fine. Also, if you feel a version that has some of the extended stuff but not all would make the movie better, please feel free to elaborate.

Alternate Version Preferred

Blade Runner
Kingdom of Heaven
Legend -seems a pattern is emerging
Aliens
The Abyss
LOTR movies
Watchmen-I think the director's version without Black Freighter is the best. The one with it is good, but somewhat of a chore to watch.
Natural Born Killers

Theatrical Preferred

Gladiator
Dances With Wolves
Any Given Sunday- minor changes, but didn't care for the eyeball scene
JFK

Tweaking
Apocalypse Now Redux- I honestly feel the only sequence that adds something in this version is the French plantation. Everything else just seems superfluous.

Superman II The Donner Version-I would say this is the preferred version until they recycle the ending of the first one. I say leave in the theatrical ending and the extended battle at the fortress and it's close to perfect.

I perfer the extended cut of the expendables some say it makes the movie better...I think it makes it a tad worse but even more enjoyable.

Re: Theatrical Cut or Extended Cut: Your Preferences

The one movie I can think of where I preferred a theatrical version to an extended version was "Independence Day", and that was because the majority of added scenes were rightfully cut out because the acting was piss-poor and they weren't properly edited into the film, more that they were stuck in there without any attempt to lead-in or lead-out of each one.

I've always preferred an extended version of a film otherwise.

This forum loves the Daredevil DC, though I feel claims of it making the movie better are overstated.

I prefer the theatrical version of most of Apatow's comedies.

I've never seen Blade Runner, in any of its forms.

Just throwing that out there.

Lethal Weapon - "Director's Cut" The school yard sniper scene is so bad-ass, Donner is an idiot for cutting it out. I'll never watch the theatrical cut blu-ray.

Prefer the theatrical cuts of Last of the Mohicans and Amadeus.
Prefer extended cuts of Aliens and The Abyss.
Prefer theatrical of The Two Towers but extended for the other two LOTR movies.

Oh yeah, Star Wars...original theatrical all the way.

Even though I haven't seen the director's cut, I will say I prefer the theatrical cut of the original Star Wars trilogy based on what I've heard of the changes - especially in Return of the Jedi.

Almost Famous / Untitled Cut is hands down far better than the theatrical cut.

Don't forget the TV cuts which used some of the original audio from the Workprint.

Re: Theatrical Cut or Extended Cut: Your Preferences

I tend to prefer extended/director's cuts.

And I'm one of those people who think that the Daredevil director's cut takes it from being a mediocre movie at best to a pretty good one.

I love both cuts of Aliens, but I prefer the Director's Cut. I prefer the longer cut for T2.

The Final Cut

I also like the slightly extended cut of T2, the one that doesn't include the all happy ending.

The extended version of Avatar's screwed up future opening is pretty good, but that's about all of the change I think works.

The Extended of The Two Towers is the only one of those EE's that is essential. The theatrical version is a HUGE step down from either version of Fellowship. The extended of Return of the King is a half-assed rush job with some terrible effects, poor attempts at humour and one near-character assassination.

Re: Theatrical Cut or Extended Cut: Your Preferences

LotR: Extended Editions; I feel like the first two benefit the most

Kingdom of Heaven- Extended; I enjoyed the theatrical cut, but think the extended version makes it a borderline great movie

Alexander- The Final Cut; The theatrical cut is a mess, and I really enjoyed the director's cut, but the final cut improves on the DC, I felt.

Superman II- The Donner Cut; I don't even like the theatrical edition of Superman II at all. The Donner version pretty much changed everything that I had issues with in the theatrical cut.

Watchmen- Director's Cut; If only for the added Holis Mason scene, I don't even remember what else was added, other than the bizarre Rorschach introduction. Even though I have the version with the Black Freighter footage added, I've never got around to watching it yet.

Clerks- Theatrical; Not much of a change (that I remember), but that original ending sucks.

Troy- Director's Cut; Although, I don't remember a lot of huge differences, but I liked the different opening.

Mallrats- Other than a different opening, I have no idea what is different between the theatrical and extended versions. I'm pretty sure I've only watched the extended cut once.

I finally bought The New World on blu-ray and look forward to watching it in extended form. I really loved the theatrical release, and I would like to see the 150 minute version, too.

I also just got the Sin City blu-ray, and I'm pretty sure I've only ever seen the theatrical release there. Also, I still haven't watched the extended cut of Green Lantern. I like the theatrical version (despite it being a very flawed movie) and maybe eventually I'll get around to watching that cut, too.

Re: Theatrical Cut or Extended Cut: Your Preferences

I heavily preferr the theaterical cut of Dawn of the Dead to the "director's cut" they have on DVD. I understand the "director's cut" is really just a less refined edit that was screened at the Cannes festival as a completion fund requirment. I find the pacing of the theatrical version much better, as well as liking the sound mix better. I remember renting the "director's cut" on laser disc, and going nuts as soon as the movie started when the opening scene in the TV station didn't have the Goblin's score in it.

For awhile I liked the theatrical version of Natural Born Killers over the director's cut. This was due to familiarity. I have watched Natural Born Killers about thirty times between 1994-1995, and when I got the big double cassette "director's cut" I hated it. Because of the extra little shots spread throughout the movie, it threw off the timing of the sound mix I was sp familar with. It was like listening to a favorite record full of skips. Over time, I have become accustomed to the "director's cut" and that to me is the movie now.

Re: Theatrical Cut or Extended Cut: Your Preferences

Just curious...Is there a difference between Director's Cut and Extended Cut?

Anyway...The first film that comes to mind is the extended 3 to 4 hour cut of DUNE that used to be shown on TV. I loved the TC, but this one as even better.

Typically, I'd say yes. "Extended" usually just means scenes added to the film to give it more depth, not necessarily what the director prefers as the "final cut" so to speak. A "Director's Cut" is supposed to be exactly what the director wanted, regardless of length or rating. That said, both terms are thrown around so much now that most people think of them as meaning the same thing.

Heathen!!!
The extended cut of Dune is unwatchable, IMO. It's so bad that even David Lynch refused to take credit as the director.

Very interesting. I was pretty young win NBK came out in theatres. When it hit home video, I tried to watch it and found it pretty horrible. It wasn't until the double-cassette Director's Cut that I fell in love with the film.

Extended/Alternate/Director's cuts that I specifically don't like:
Terminator 2 (of all three versions, the theatrical is the best)
Empire Records (it changes the flow of the movie in a weird way)
Donnie Darko (takes the film from great to lousy)
Watchmen (as someone else mentioned, the DC is the best. The Ultimate Cut is too much and the Theatrical is too short)
Aliens (It's not bad, just not preferred)
Mallrats (way too long until they get into the mall)
