Who knows if the Engineers are privy to what really happens when the goo is consumed. There are no onlookers, at least not in this moment. Maybe it's a personal and private experience and they just know that no one comes back?

Charlize Theron's character isn't a red herring or macguffin as much as a shaggy dog. You keep thinking there is going to be some kind of payoff, then

^ I would argue for spoiler tags, but let's be honest. Only about ten or so posts have actually reviewed this movie in the traditional sense. The rest has been debating over what this or that did or didn't mean, or Supermallet re-iterating his hatred.

Seems like Ridley is actually still putting together the extended cut going by his comments in the collider interview.
I wonder if he will let peoples opinions on the movie have an effect on what he is putting back in...

I had the same thought. Didn't seem to be much originality in this. People are saying it's the same plot as AVP. Prometheus looks like the Firefly ship. The costumes look like something out of Mass Effect. Actually, Holloway looks pretty similar to Shepard. They pulled a weird squid like creature out of Neo in The Matrix when he was bugged. Meh...

it better, because what's seen on screen doesn't amount to a hill of beans

Just saw this again at IMAX. The first time I saw it 2D and I have to say I actually preferred the 3D. It was very well done, added depth and did everything I think 3D should without any gimmick or eye strain. I still liked it and I still had all the issues I did before, not as bad since I've already bitched them out of my system, but this time two more things stood out that really bugged me:
1) David removed her cross because it might be contaminated and put it in a container in the lab. Then he took it out of the lab and put it in his environmental suit for a trip to see the makers? What WTF?!
2) Super intelligent higher being takes off in his ship after going HULK SMASH and then some idiot crashes into his ship. OK, I'd be totally pissed too but I don't think the first thing I'd do is get out of my ship and run to some lifeboat from the other ship for revenge. Why in the world would I even have noticed it was ejected and there at all? Prob. I'd be more concerned that I was OK, is the ship salvageable, are the other ships still there and unmolested, etc. But OK, say I'm just so pissed and do happen to see that ship there and want to SMASH MORE PUNY HUMANS. Nowhere on my ship is any sort of weapon? Not even a blunt object to swing around? I just charge in and because I'm big and strong they can't possibly have anything that could hurt me, right? I am strongest there is!
And I never really had any issue with the score. So many people have said how awful they thought it was so I paid more attention this time. It def. got very heavy handed and was unnecessary in some scenes but overall I liked it.
Bring on the extended cut.

I didn't think it was awful, but I did think it was meant to be for another movie. It worked in the opening and when David was looking at the holographic star maps. In many other spots it seemed like an odd counterpoint to what was happening in the scene.

I thought the score was great; I loved Harry Gregson-Williams theme that you hear throughout the film. It was full of wonderment and rich orchestral work and I thought it fit the theme of self-exploration well.

I really liked it, can see why some did not though. Most things make more sense with a second viewing, but others are left wide open and are indeed holes. But it did look amazing, had some really good acting, was very entertaining. Any movie that creates discussions like this one does is doing something right.
I think more would really like it if it didn't have the whole ZOMG ALIEN PREQUEL baggage.
***1/2 out of ****

I don't think anyone in the audience actually believed it was contaminated. I was just trying to follow the "logic" of the script. It was safe in the lab. It makes zero sense that he would take the time to go back to the lab to get someone's personal belonging that would have no real meaning to an android and put it in his environmental suit for a trip to see the engineer that he had no reason to think he wouldn't return from. Maybe if it was someplace visible and Albino Hulk saw it and went apeshit it would fit with the crucifying space jesus theory but even then why would he have it?

I will probably go see it again today. Started watching Alien again and the SJ sure doesn't look like it's wearing a suit. Looks very skeletal, especially the exit wound.

Also...in now way was it a bad idea to let it be known that David was...well...what he was. The way people treated him, his possible feelings of it, etc, etc. Just wonderful. David also made the greatest point in the movie when he asked Holloway that question of why he was created and how it would if that's the same answer they got. A very nice bitch slap.
