I've been reading some of the Cannes reports about it, and it's apparently pretty insane - in a good way (the term "Lynchian" has been thrown around.) I haven't seen any Carax films (most of them seem to be oop in both the US and UK), but I'm sort of looking forward to it.

First half: one of the most ingenious and insane films I've seen in years. Second half: almost unbearably dull.
I hate when that happens.

I caught this tonight. Honestly, I'm surprised there was already a thread about it.
I can't say I loved it, but for a "rich guy in a limo" movie, it was better than Cosmopolis. The Bus is right about the first half of the film. I'll disagree with him (slightly) on the second half. It wasn't dull... just not as "what the fuck?" as the first half.
Lots of questions... only vague hints at answers. Very entertaining, although my audience barely laughed at all.

Finally caught this the other night. It demands repeat viewings. Denis Lavant is fantastic as usual. Definitly gonna make my top 10 at the end of the year. I seemed to be the only person laughing at quite a few points in the film.

there should be more posts in this thread. This film gets better with each repeated viewing.

Have not seen it yet even though I'm dying to. Don't do streaming so I'm waiting to find the Blu-Ray for a decent price.

I agree that it is a movie that grows on you with repeat viewings and further contemplation. The first time I watched it, my reaction was that it was quirky, generally entertaining, but also mildly pretentious and overly self indulgent. But after further watches, I started coming around to what Carax was going for thematically - that life itself is illusory, much like the art of filmmaking, and that it is largely about facades and the roles we all play as "characters" in our own "dramas." And while all that may indeed sound pretentious and not especially original, Carax does it with such a sense of fun and panache, that it amounts to something greater than the sum of its parts.
Plus, it's just such a great looking film to watch.

And that's what killed this movie for me. Although I have to say that Denis Lavant's performance, as always, is excellent.

I really liked Cosmopolis. I finished the movie — something I didn't do with the book (and I like DeLillo).

What I liked most about Cosmopolis is that it felt more like a Cronenberg film than anything he's done since eXistenZ.

Hey look at me resurrecting an old thread. BOO-YA!
Watched 'Holy Motors' last night, after getting introduced to Carax via 'Annette'.
Well I won't claim to understand any or all of 'Holy Motors' but I was certainly never bored. Visually stunning, and Levant was chameleonically wonderful.
I agree for the most part with the 2012 comment above from The Bus, that "First half: one of the most ingenious and insane films I've seen in years. Second half: almost unbearably dull." I did really like the sequence with Kylie Minogue (though I would be hardpressed to explain it properly) and the 47-minute "not-really-explain-anything-making-of" on the BD shows that she sang the song live during the scene. But yeah, the second half had a noticeably different tone than the first half, and not for the better.
Bonus points for Carax featuring a Sparks song on the radio (a hint of the Annette collab), and the accordian intermission was fantastic.
