Weekend Box Office (5/4 - 5/7): Joss Whedon Finally Achieves Box Office Gold

Really Finke?

If it makes $65 - 67 million today, it places it somewhere in the top six or seven biggest opening days ever. Even if it's not a record, that's nothing to sneeze at. It's a "sequel" to a franchise where only two films have grossed over $200 million total domestically (Iron Man & Iron Man 2).

I predict it'll do over $300 million domestically and may even have a shot at $400 million depending on how the next two weeks go.

Nikki only gets wet for records. Anything else, and it's sand-cooch.

I'd expect the weekend take to land around $157m or so, which is goddamn spectacular for these Marvel films. And based on the WOM, I'd expect some serious legs.

Based upon the reaction at my midnight showing last night, I can't see Dark Shadows opening at more than $40 million next weekend. The Avengers will be the number one film again next weekend and possibly the week after that too.

This might 300 million be the end of next weekend

It gets over $300 million? Way to go out on a limb there.

It'll hit $400 million with word of mouth and positive reviews. Easily.

In terms of worldwide totals, it'll be between Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers. Both will have a shot at $1 billion. Hunger Games just crossed $600 million.

Harry Potter did $91 million in a single day and made it to $381 million domestically. Only nine films have crossed the $400 million mark during their initial theatrical release. Seven of those nine have all been released in the past decade.

While The Avengers has a lot going for it as it'll cross over $500 million worldwide come tomorrow or Sunday, it really depends on how long the legs will last. It'll dominate next weekend as I don't know a single person who has genuine interest in Dark Shadows, but I can't say if Battleship will take off with the American public or not. I'm guessing it won't and The Avengers can be the number one film until Men in Black 3 comes out, but who knows.

True, but not an apples-to-apples comparison as that was the final film of an 8-film series. It only experienced a jump in B.O. thanks to being the last one, and the 3D inflation. If people hadn't see the others, chances are they weren't seeing that one, either.

The Avengers can reel in all four quads and build upon buzz to get people who wouldn't normally see it into theaters. But I do think it'll start to fizzle once $350m is clear.

I think the unwashed masses will go for Battleship, and it'll topple the Avengers in its 3rd weekend.

I hope not. Though, if it does, that makes it more likely that we'll see this:

Universal has pumped the fact the film has already done $170 million worldwide. Which, I guess is something to tout, but by that logic John Carter did $200 million plus worldwide and only $70 million in the US.

Disappointing numbers for The Avengers. Hopefully it eeks out enough money to warrant a sequel.

I have to admit, I didn't think this would expand it's audience as much as it has beyond the Iron Man films... but with the exceptional reviews, this appears to be headed for the billion dollar club.

I really hope Battleship tanks. I hope it tanks so bad that Peter Berg is never allowed to make another movie ever again.

^ I enjoyed The Kingdom for what it was, but I have to agree. Peter Berg needs to be forced into retirement.

What was the last good thing he did? The pilot for Friday Night Lights?

I'd go see a movie about Godzilla-sized hippos.

I don't agree with some of his project choices (like Battleship), but I think he has a solid style, it's not unlike how I would film a movie. (It's not Bay crazy, but solid, colorful, shots) I guess I'd put him in the same category as Favrou, Mangold, the Rat, etc.. they may not bring a strong, unique vision, but they make a good looking, acceptable, studio film that makes money. And earn a big paycheck doing it.

"The AMC theater chain is selling so many Avengers tickets today that its entire credit card processing system is delayed so moviegoers can’t charge their concession snacks right away."

Looking at maybe 70 million now and 160-170 opening weekend.
