I love Craig as Bond but really hope we get to see Elba as Bond someday.

There are rumors around that Waltz is Blofeld. That would be interesting. Some sites practically confirm it even. While others just take it as rumor.

I wonder if he'll shave his head for it.

He shaved his head for Gilliam. So it isn't out of his comfort to do so.

Believe it or not, I haven't watched that many Bond movies. How much background should I have given I choose to watch this?

Probably none, but Casino Royale / Quantam of Solace / Skyfall make for a nice stand-alone trilogy.

There really isn't anything in Skyfall which ties it to the previous films.

The first two give you a reason to care for Dench's M.

re: SPECTRE (Bond 24) (2015, D: Mendes) S: Craig, Waltz, Bellucci, Fiennes, Bautista

In total the three Craig films form an origin backstory telling how we got to the classic Bond narrative.
How he became a 00 agent
Personal experiences that created the classic Bond character, his attitudes and motivations
Assembles the classic supporting characters that surround him and what his personal relationship with them are.
We are now at square one, just prior to Dr. No film.

This next film should be a return to the classic Bond film narrative.
Gun barrel logo back at beginning of film
Bond goes to M'soffice for assignment with some interaction with Moneypenny in her office.
Then down to Q branch for his armaments

This next film should be like going directly from Die Another Day to it. The past three were a detour.
The same thing could have been done between Moore and Dalton, or Dalton and Brosnan.

depending on how you mean it... a return to the classic Bond narrative could be bad. It is that formula and lack of imagination that drove Bond to be shit.

I prefer solid storytelling over completely controlling yourself by the formula. It is a tricky thing. I very much like how the three craig films still honoured the formula but also brought something fresh that it didn't have either. I didn't like QoS though, it had some grade A moments though...but very weak of a film.

As long as they explain Quantum. Or how Quantum has now turned into SPECTRE.

That bit at the opera in QoS was fucking awesome. But yeah... if Blofeld is in this w/ Waltz playing him and having Bautista as his head good....that seems pretty badass. I love Bautista, man. He's on a fucking roll w/ being awesome.

I don't mind the classic Bond formula, I'd just like to see it combined with a better story arc and continuation of what happened in Casino Royale and Quantum. I know a lot of people would prefer standalone movies, but I disliked that Skyfall basically ignored what happened in those movies or didn't address them.

Waltz seems like he was born to be a Bond villain.

I agree that CR/Qos/Skyfall form a pretty thorough origin story. The QoS gets some hate, but it's obviously meant as the second half of CR. Skyfall finishes everything up for the rest of the Bond establishment: Q sector is now active, Moneypenny now works in the office, and a male M is now Bond's CO (and in the classic office to boot).
Whether or not this means they will return to the classic formula remains to be seen, but Skyfall went against the grain rather well in that regard. It was almost like they did the classic Bond formula then went back to England for a different movie .

I meant the previous two films, but even that doesn't really fit, it'd mean Bond was 75 years old. I assumed it was just out there as an homage and you weren't supposed to think about it more deeply than that.

That part of Skyfall didn't bother me. It actually mirrors the original Connery movies in that Goldfinger was kind of the odd duck that stepped outside of the overall SPECTRE narrative that was running through those early movies. I'll be disappointed if we never hear from Quantum again, but there's no reason every movie has to be a direct continuation from the previous.

I think Quantum was trying to setup Bond for more traditional stories, at least it's suggested by that terrible finale, but Skyfall sort of pushed back against that. Quantum had a lot of good stuff peppered in a terrible overall package, especially bad as a direct follow up to Casino Royale.

I thought Quantum was just fine, but then again I thought Casino Royale and Skyfall were both overrated. They both suffered from pacing issues and a weak 3rd act.

My issue with Quantum is that it felt like a cliff notes version of Bond with an embarrassing third act.

I don't think every movie has to be a direct continuation, but in this case I thought CR/QoS set up Bond specifically for it so I was disappointed that Skyfall wasn't the movie that did it. Although there was more about Skyfall that I didn't care for.

It had issues, but I actually liked the brief running time and kinetic action scenes. I felt like the reactions were extreme for all 3 movies, but it seems like the internet can only deal in extremes. A movie is either fucking amazing or total crap, whereas I found all 3 films enjoyable, but not perfect.
