Looks okay. Great cast...except for Page.

Seems Allen now has a preference to making movies utilizing Europe as opposed to New York. Can't figure out all of the hate for Ellen Page. She's not a great actress, but I don't find her as grating as others. Saw Ornella Muti listed in the credits, been a while since we've seen her, but I'll never forget the feelings she gave me as a kid in Flash Gordon.

If anyone can pull a good performance out of a mediocre actor, it's Woody Allen.

So recently he's done England a few times, Spain, France and now Italy.

I think his movies are being planned around his vacations.

Easier for him to get financing in Europe than America.

Nice to see Woody actually IN one of his films again...I don't think he's been in one for a while. Seems that way.

Speaking of, when was the last time Judy Davis was in one of his movies? Husbands and Wives?

Thats really the opposite of what Woody Allen does. Scarlett Johansson's worst performances are in Woody's films.

To be fair, Scarlett Johansson is a bad actress. Aside from Lost in Translation, she is truly awful in everything.

I never understood Woody's infatuation with her. Well, other than her physical charms.

I wonder if Scarlett put out for Woody. I thought in general she was pretty bad in all 3 films they made together. In particular Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Some of her scenes in VCB were so self aware it fucking amazes me Woody didn't fire her outright.

Re: TO ROME WITH LOVE (2012) (dir. Woody Allen) (Cruz, Baldwin, Eisenberg, Page)

Saw this today... I honestly thought it was kind of a mess.

Spoiler:
The movie had 4 different subplots, none of which were interconnected. Baldwin/Eisenberg/Page's plot was probably the strongest of them. The Penelope Cruz subplot just did nothing for me, except for seeing her in that dress. Holy god almighty. The other two plots were just complete and total wastes of time.

I'm not sure. He goes through phases. He does a string of good then goes bad..then good. It's a weird effect he has.

I wanted this to be good considering I've really liked some of this post 2000 stuff. And that Midnight in Paris was great. Guess he had to dip down in quality if MiP was really good.

Okay, I misinterpreted what you wrote. I thought you meant that he hasn't made ANY good films as of yet. My fault, as I hastily read your post.

I agree with you for the most part, but I'd much rather watch a mediocre Allen film than most of the mainstream crap that populates the multiplexes.

Saw it this weekend and didn't care for it all. My least favorite of the European set films.

Re: TO ROME WITH LOVE (2012) (dir. Woody Allen) (Cruz, Baldwin, Eisenberg, Page)

I saw this the past weekend and enjoyed it. I thought the structure was one of Allen's more ambitious as he basically attempted to recreate those old Italian multi-director omnibus films that used to be really popular (see: Boccaccio 70), but tackle it on his own.

Unlike, his other European-set films he clearly drew on the cinematic history of Italy in this one whether it was lifting the basic plot of Fellini's The White Sheik for one of the subplots or invoking the feel of La Dolce Vita during the Eisenberg-Page storyline. Even Benigni's storyline felt like something Monicelli could have done.

In terms of style, it was interesting to see Allen channeling other filmmakers. And unlike when he made his "Bergman film," he was channeling multiple directors in To Rome with Love, which I really enjoyed. Then again, I love classic Italian cinema so I'm a sucker for homage pieces like this from talented directors who share that love (see also: Spike Lee's Miracle at St. Anna).

Re: TO ROME WITH LOVE (2012) (dir. Woody Allen) (Cruz, Baldwin, Eisenberg, Page)

Allen fucked up by not making it an anthology film and telling each individual story on its own a la Paris, Je t'aime. Having all the stories run together makes the film a (boring) mess.

Saw this last night and enjoyed it. Sure, it's light-hearted, but that doesn't make it less entertaining.
