It's all about how you edit and score it all into an advertisement. And they're not doing a good job of it.

The Super Bowl spot for this film, which I'd consider to be one of the most important tools for mass marketing a film, was an overloaded nightmare that probably confused people more than intrigued them.

Well, I wouldn't want to be related to the marketing team of JC come Monday morning. I sense mass firings and maybe complete department shutdowns over this.

I loved the movie, but agree the trailers are a failure.

Also whichever genius who came of with the tag "before Star Wars, before Avatar, there was John Carter!" needs to be fired. While technically true, its more confusing then anything

It was making me think that this was some old franchise from the early 70s or something until I re-read the backstory.

The marketing was abysmal but I wonder if it will be a good Redbox rental.

Poor Taylor Kitsch. He's a talented actor
Are we talking about the same guy? I've seen nothing out of Kitsch that suggests he's even competent, much less talented.

Hell, I still think of John Carter as Riggins In Space.

How should it have been edited and scored?

I can see how someone who doesn't know the difference between then and than would be confused.

I hate the name of the thread by the way. Very fan-boy. Taylor did a fine job and he looked hot too.
Damn good movie. Much better than Avatar or Star Wars prequels.

The thread title has nothing to do with his acting ability. This was supposed to be his break out for stardom but instead this is going down as a box office bomb.

I haven't seen the movie so my comment specifically on the ads but...better would be the word I'd use.

Re: Weekend Box Office (3/9 - 3/11): Taylor Kitsch's Career Is Over Before It Started

Yeah, I agree the trailers for John Carter were awful---it made the movie look like a cross between Attack of the Clones and one of the terrible Mummy sequels, and despite the appeal of the source material for me, I was planning on skipping it.

Reading a few positive reviews changed my mind, and seeing it, I thought it was really great.

Re: Weekend Box Office (3/9 - 3/11): Taylor Kitsch's Career Is Over Before It Started

I think the problem specifically for me on the marketing is that I'm not "wowed" or impressed by the spectactle. They've got good looking shit in there and in context would be pretty cool to see played out but...I'm not being pulled in. I see what I see and it's merely fine as a compilation of images + sounds put together.

I do very much want to see it based off the source material that I have great respect for as a piece of influential history but the marketing sure as hell hasn't pulled me in. That and Andrew Stanton. I'll see it next thursday.

So stupid, no one is going to blame Taylor Kitsch for John Carters failure.

yeah, I can't in any form from what I've seen believe that Kitsch is to blame. Disney marketing...someone's about to get fucked over there. If they haven't already.

Someone should be in that department. While the movie wasn't that great, it was nowhere near the disaster I was lead to believe from the spots. They should have taken the current approach of Prometheus and kept it all mysterious looking with lots of shots of the landscapes and less of the Hollywood action/Bruckheimer-esque stuff.

I never watched that show consistently, no. I saw a couple of episodes here and there, and I never remembered him. Then again, I don't remember much of the show period.

As for his film career, every performance he's given that I've seen, has been bland and awful. He sucked in The Covenant, sucked in Wolverine, and sucked in The Bang Bang Club. I haven't seen this film, but the few reviews I've read don't seem to suggest that trend has changed. The trailers don't do him any favors either. He's just another bland actor Hollywood is trying to make a star, ala Sam Worthington.

Maybe he's one of those guys who translates better to TV.

Re: Weekend Box Office (3/9 - 3/11): Taylor Kitsch's Career Is Over Before It Started

I think the irony of the marketing is that it doesn't say much about the story, and yet that's the hallmark of all great Pixar films. I'm willing to bet that Andrew Stanton took the time to craft a story around characters and emotion. Yet the ads have all been flash and no substance.

I thought the first trailer last year that focused on the setup from the 1800s was the most compelling.

Well, I liked him in John Carter and loved him in FNL. I'm not going to blame him for Wolverine because everything was awful in Wolverine, and haven't seen the other two films you mentioned. But he can give good performances.
